Built in 1953 from scrap lumber, Delgadillo's Snow Cap Drive-In still stands strong today and is a well-known stop along Route 66. In fact, this place even has its own Wikipedia page. As long as you are on Route 66 in Seligman, you cannot miss this place as it stands out along the road with its neon signs and quirky decor.
The door to the counter had two knobs. If you cannot open the door during their normal business hours, it does not necessarily mean that they are closed. Try the other knob. The knob on the left is the real one that opens the door. However, this is a busy place so someone in the crowd is bound to figure out the door if you cannot. Once you enter, you are in a tunnel covered with money, pictures, business cards, and random stuff. The line will not seem that long when you spend the time admiring the memorabilia from previous travelers.
The menu is pretty simple so it should not take you too long to make a decision and keep the long line moving. There are some burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, burritos, ground beef tacos, milkshakes, and snow cones. There are also a few beers on the menu as well. Rest assured that your cheeseburger has cheese, and that your chicken is already dead. Once you order, walk out the door and wait for your food at the pick-up counter. There are plenty of tables out on the patio. Walk around too, and check out the classic cars, outhouse, and other random stuff.
I ordered a ground beef taco and a shake. The taco was decent, and the shake was comforting on a summer day. The food does not stand out, but it is not supposed to be gourmet or anything fancy. It is made-to-order and served hot, which makes it tasty, especially after a few hours of driving along Route 66. Also, the food is super affordable.
Delgadillo's Snow Cap Drive-In is a good pit stop for its attraction value and also because there is not much other food option. Make this a stop along your Route 66 journey, and keep Route 66 alive.
