As usual with Marriott Hotels they are to a superb high standard that we now have come to expect. |The Delta Durham Royal County did not fall short in an area at all. |We had an excellent welcome & service during our stay.|Our room was superb with all necessities you need & as usual a very comfortable bed which is signature of Marriott. |The food & drinks offer was good. |Breakfast was great, with plentiful food choices & very relaxed. |We did not dine in hotel. |The bar was also very good & Emily excelled behind the bar sorting our drinks order. |May I thank all staff for very enjoyable stay.|We will return.

The hotel was very nice. Clean nice atmosphere and friendly staff. My room was very good with plenty of room and a walk in shower.|The big disappointment was the food and service in the restaurant. We waited an hour before it was served then some of it was cold. second night we waited an hour and 20 minutes for service. The food was adequate but not filling. However to be fair, they did offer us a complimentary drink both nights. We don't usually complain, but we did this time and we were refunded the full cost of the three meals we had paid for and again a complimentary drink.|Apart from that, the hotel is in a brilliant situation to enjoy Durham and to travel about in the area and Durham has so much to offer.

This hotel is part of the Marriott group. While it’s definitely showing its age—especially compared to the Doubletree Hilton Angel King’s Cross we’d just come from—it has a unique charm that grew on us. Sure, the facade looks pretty dated, but the location more than makes up for it. You’re surrounded by fantastic pubs (including what claims to be the “Smallest Gin Bar in Durham,” possibly in all of the UK!), great restaurants, and you’re right in the heart of the town center. The strategic location is a huge plus. When we arrived, the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. Gavin, in particular, was absolutely lovely—always smiling and genuinely seemed to enjoy helping guests. He was polite and gave us all the information we needed for a great stay. After checking in, we headed to our room on the second floor. Unfortunately, the lift was broken, so we had to haul our luggage up the stairs. What a pain! It definitely tested my non-existent superhuman strength, but we managed to lug everything up eventually. Our room was lovely—spotlessly clean and everything worked perfectly. The electrical outlets, plumbing, everything was in great condition. The bathroom had both a bathtub and separate shower, which was wonderful. I absolutely loved having proper baths during our stay. Breakfast was classic full English—nothing fancy, but Delta put on a good spread that my wife and I really enjoyed. Gavin’s helpfulness really shone through again when we checked out on 1st July, 2025. It happened to be Durham University’s graduation period, so the hotel was packed with graduates and their families—many of whom were moving back to their home countries with loads of luggage. By the time we were ready to check out, it was impossible to store our bags with the front office because of all the other luggage. But Gavin went above and beyond, trying his best to find us space somewhere. Despite all the chaos, he managed to locate a pantry where we could safely store our bags while we explored the town one last time. Gavin is truly a gem and made our entire stay so much more pleasant. We’ll definitely be back again!

My partner, a University of Durham alumnus, had a wonderful experience at this hotel many years ago. Unfortunately, my recent stay was far from that standard!||From my first interaction, I sensed that guests who are non-white or speak English with an accent may not receive the same warmth as others. While the front desk staff greeted the white guests ahead of me with friendly conversation, the male clerk (Gavin) became noticeably less cordial when it was my turn. He also failed to mention that housekeeping services must be specifically requested.||Because of this omission, my room was not cleaned the next day — which I initially accepted without complaint. However, on the following morning when I requested housekeeping from a female clerk (Juliana), she raised her voice and asked, “Did you book the housekeeping service?” When I explained that no one had informed me of such a policy, she offered a short, formal apology, yet her manner remained distant.||The most unpleasant discovery came when I took a shower and noticed the water nearly overflowing. Upon checking the drain, I found it completely clogged with a large mass of hair from a previous guest (see attached photo). It was clear that the bathroom had not been properly cleaned before my arrival!||To add to the discomfort, when I went down for breakfast one morning, I was told that “someone has already used your room number.” Although the staff eventually let me dine, the experience was awkward and made me question the hotel’s internal procedures.||While the location is convenient, with many dining options nearby, and the initial hospitality fell short of basic inclusivity and respect. Although the housekeeping staff did their job well once scheduled, the lack of proactive service, cleanliness issues, and the way I was treated make it hard for me to recommend this hotel — particularly for solo travelers, non-white guests, or those who are not fluent in English.||In 2025, hospitality should mean more than location and facilities. It should guarantee a clean, comfortable space and treat all guests with equal courtesy. Sadly, this was not my experience here. :(

The hotel was below any expectations for a Marriot hotel. We were given a room on the ground floor of an outhouse away from the main hotel, with the wonderful views of the car boots and exhausts right in front of our windows so the curtains and windows had to remain closed. The place smelled like a musty dorm room, it was dark, dusty and very run down. The mattresses were old and hard ( and I am used to sleeping on hard mattresses). We could hear each and every time someone used the toilet from the other rooms so we slept late and woke up early. There was also a sound of a motor or something similar the whole time. There was no coffee maker and not even a bottle of water available. |The bathroom was very dated, we had a loo roll on the counter that was obviously used as it had been stuffed with cut loo paper inside the roll for some reason. The shower was incredibly difficult to get in and out of and very slippery so if you had any slight mobility issues showering would have been a dangerous feat. The water temperature switched from scalding hot to cold and back while showering. ||We traveled 12 hours for this and couldn’t have been more disappointed. We spent have the courage to ask for a change of rooms as we were so tired but the place seemed full because of several events at Durham that weekend. The only positive was the very helpful and kind front desk staff and its location which was 5 minutes from the center.

I stayed at the Marriott in Durham for one night as part of my young person’s move from university to home for the summer. I have stayed in all Durham hotels over the years and whilst Marriott was good, it was all very standard with nothing exceptional. Nothing wrong either. My room was upgraded and it was a nice enough room far from the main reception, with a view to the carpark. ||On the subject of the carpark - and I appreciate this may be an odd comment - if you have a larger car, Marriott is by far the best hotel to stay in in Durham. Being able to park easily (which you can’t do in other Durham hotels) can be worth a lot.

Me and my mum stayed here between July 18th and 22nd. We had a really good time, Durham is a wonderful city with lots of lovely scenery and history, with the Marriott being very central and so making it very accessible. We never ate out because the food was fantastic, and our rooms were very comfortable. In terms of service, we'd like to give special praise to Emily, one of the bar staff; she was thoughtful, gave good advice on food choices and local attractions while displaying a generally nice and sociable personality. She was very friendly and welcoming. The cleaners were also fantastic, with excellent service as we were a bit messy.

We were just staying in Durham for one night, and we stayed in a King Room, in the Riverside extension to the hotel. The hotel is a little bit of a rabbit warren as I guess it has been developed in stages. For a Monday afternoon it also appeared very busy as there was a real hubbub of noise as guests greeted each other in the area between the entrance and the restaurant.|We were checked in efficiently, I had prepaid for the room, and we were offered breakfast and asked if we had a car in the car park to add to the charges. All of this was done with minimum fuss.|Our room didn't face the river, but faced the car park - not a problem for one night as it was spacious and the bed was very wide and comfortable. The bathroom was excellent with a very nice walk-in shower. |An added little bonus was the magnificent view of Durham Cathedral from a window on the walkway between the main hotel and the Riverside extension, breathtaking every time we walked past, either to or from our room.|Breakfast was of the buffet type, which was fine, with plenty to choose from. The only slight disadvantage of keeping food warm like this, especially early on when traffic is lighter, is that some of the food overcooks - all the fried eggs were hard for example. Anyway of its type this breakfast was quite good despite this.|Everything was very easy and convenient, and the hotel is perfectly placed for the centre of Durham - we would certainly stay here again.

Yelp
Hidden Gem in Durham! The level of professionalism, customer service & overall experience were outstanding. Starting with the warm & friendly reception of Anna, Eve, Julliana, Victoria. Housekeeping: Shirley & Ethan went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Kitchen: Chef Jimmy prepared amazing 'To go breakfast' for our family, including coloring books for the children on our departure dates. Bar & restaurant staff amazing, but Sue went above & beyond in every way possible! It truly felt like home at this location! No detailed was missed and assistance was always available. Daily breakfast buffet was varied & delicious. May you continue to excel in outstanding customer service!

Yelp
Lovely old hotel in heart of Durham provides a great base for the city and area. With any old hotel there are a few negatives as well as positives. The rooms are spacious and well equipped but my 3rd floor room did not have a good bathroom. Shower was underpowered and in a very slippery bath with a shower curtain. Not ideal as shower curtains are not what I expect in a high end hotel, while the bath is pretty dangerous and I would be concerned for older guests stepping out. In addition some tiles were missing above wash basin. Breakfast consisted of hot and cold buffet and was very good. So some hits and misses but location was a winner.

Yelp
The Durham Marriott Hotel is one of the best hotels in the area and carries on the fantastic name of Marriott, the hotel is located in the heart of Durham and is a brilliant hotel which contains a Starbucks Coffee, The hotel has free wi-fi in the lobby and the food in the hotel is fantastic, they had no problem helping me with my dietary requirements, that is something brilliant to add to the fantastic room. We experienced a problem with the toliet in our first room so we was moved to another, our 2nd room was nicer than the 1st room just when I thought the 1st room couldn't get better. Another great thing about this hotel was that the staff were fantastic, they were very nice and helped me whenever I needed their help. The best staff I have ever encountered in a Hotel! As well as located in the heart of Durham, it is a great location as well due to being half an hour away from both St James Park and The Stadium of Light. I am disappointed, like at most Marriott hotels you had to pay for internet in the room but it was still nice sitting in the lobby on the internet.

Yelp
I love the smell of food as you walk in, really nice food but pricey as most hotels are. Nice for a treat on occasion but could not be a regular thing unless you were loaded. The staff were mostly helpful and friendly but not too chatty though. Food is served very quickly and always well presented, always makes your mouth water. I really love the way they seem to take pride in their food, it makes you want to go there even more!

Yelp
It's a rare treat when I go here, but I always really enjoy it! We went here for our works Christmas night out a few years ago and had a brilliant time! The seating area is quite old fashioned, but in a really good way! It looked very posh and we definitely felt it! The food was excellent, we had starters, mains and dessert with sorbet inbetween to refresh ourselves. the waiting staff were really good, polite and helpful without being too full on which was great. The prices were a bit on the steep side, but for a treat it's a really niceplace to visit

Yelp
The Durham Marriott is a wonderfully located hotel in Durham with easy access to the University areas and the island. The hotel has a great restaurant where we had desserts one night and the service was excellent. The swimming pool, spa facilities and the workout areas are also very good. The rooms are a bit cramped but OK. They do not have free Wifi which really should be included - it cost £15 for 24 hours. And the service was just a little bit off. I increased my rating because a very nice gentleman at the front desk gave me wonderful service when I complained about the service.

Yelp
oh my gosh....not sure why I have been so unlucky. But this trip to the hotel has been challenging. It is in a great location, and the staff is very nice, but the hotel needs some work. Specifically, the hotel rooms on the riverside are NOT air conditioned, but in reality it is near 60 here...do you think you need air conditioning in weather that is in the near 60? I did not. BUT, with the windows open it is very warm. Evidently, these rooms are over something that is hot - like electrical or something...wonderful! Management has provided two fans, but in reality it is just helping to circulate the air - certainly not helpful in cooling a room. I am grateful that tonight it is cooler outside and I hope to get some sleep :) My hair dryer was also not working - it works, it stops...it works, it stops. I have been reminded to must push the button to operate the hairdryer - yep, I got that - but trust me it is not working. Finally after asking for a third time to get a hair dryer, the unlucky person who came to give me fresh towels, etc (they forgot to clean my room today) is bringing me one - bless her heart. And lastly, yes, thank you for fixing the phone. Evidently, the plugs were not in the correct place. Perhaps your trip to the hotel will be better :)

Yelp
In the month of August I was in Durham on Business and stayed in a few different hotels in the area. The Marriott was one of the best for location and it does have spa facilities, but as for anything else they were trailing behind their competitors. There was no consistency in the way the staff on reception dealt with their guest. I don't know if this was due to personal issues or prejudicial issues but it is not acceptable for any hotel never mind an internationally renowned hotel. I had an issue with my slippers being removed from my room, I was later informed by the hotel manager the following day that they were in lost property and had been removed by the cleaner who I was told thought my room was vacant, although I had a suitcase and clothing in the room, items in cupboards yet it was only my slippers that went missing and it was only the cleaning staff that had access to lost property - very dubious. On my last stay at the hotel I was supposedly upgraded. I can confirm that rooms on the second floor appear to be more spacious than rooms on the first floor, but that's all... the standard was poor. The room hadn't been checked prior to my stay and obviously hadn't been used for at least a few days as there was a cobweb from the bed pillow to the ceiling, the room needed a good clean, dirt marks on the bath, the toilet flush felt like it was going to come out of the wall, rusty bath plug, definitely not up to standard. After complaining I was offered a free upgrade on my next visit. Please tell me why anyone in their right mind would want to pay to stay there again after my experience?! The company also offers a reward scheme, this was never mentioned to me and only came to light on one of my latter stays when I checked in with colleague who had been informed of the card on her first visit. When I asked for the points to be added from my earlier stays in the month this was declined as the booking was made by a third party. What difference this makes is beyond me, the booking was for me on all of my stays. The Radisson Blu, which also has a Spa and offers a reward scheme happily credits previous stays without any issue. Therefore unless there is no availability in any other hotel in Durham the Marriott is not to be recommended.
