Den Gamle By is a very cool experience. We spent over 6 hours exploring all of the homes, businesses and gardens that have been recreated/ reconstructed. Good variety of food and drink options as you make your way through. Quite a lot of interactions set up in many of the exhibits, and the rotary phones you can use to call businesses in the town are such a fun idea.

The absolute best open-air museum I have ever seen (and I at 67 have seen many in various countries). You will need a lot of time! You are transported magically back in time to various eras. As an example, when you walk in a 1974 apartment, EVERYTHING is there as if the people living there had just left in a hurry... toys on the floor, trash in the bins, half-eaten food on the table and stove, cigarette butts in the ashtrays.... get the idea? You can open drawers and see their junk and medicines. In the 1800s you can see the same attention to detail in the homes of rich and poor. See factories and shops through the ages. Guides are everywhere dressed appropriately and acting out their roles to tell you about life in their world. SUPERB and worth 6 stars.

A brilliant living museum in a fairly condensed area. The newer parts 1970s to 2010s had great details and I really liked how they had real people's experiences of living in those types of apartments. The staff all around were friendly and helpful and I like how everything flowed from one area to the other. We parked over in the Q-Park (Ceres Byen) across the road which wasn't a bad walk (5ish minutes across the road).

Den Gamle By – A Walk Through Danish History 🇩🇰 If you're visiting Aarhus, Den Gamle By is an absolute must-see! This open-air museum is like stepping into a time machine — beautifully recreated streets, shops, and homes from different eras in Denmark’s past. 🕰️ I loved wandering through the cobblestone alleys and seeing how life looked in the 1800s, 1920s, and even the 1970s. The attention to detail is incredible — from the authentic furniture to vintage products on display in the shops. 📸 Don’t miss the baker, the old-school radio store, and the apartment buildings that show daily life through the decades. It’s both nostalgic and eye-opening. 🎟️ The entry fee is worth every krone, especially if you take your time to explore all the sections. It’s perfect for families, history lovers, and anyone curious about Danish culture. 💬 Tip: Bring comfy shoes and a camera — and don’t skip the modern 1970s area, it’s unexpectedly fun! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Highly recommended — one of the highlights of my Denmark trip!

I went both at nighttime and early in the morning, and while it’s not operating with all the shops and activities (after hours) it’s actually free like a public park. I was very impressed with the amount of historic preservation. If you come at night, it is very dark and kinda creepy lol. I did not go during the operating hours so I didn’t experience the lively feeling and all Den Gamble By has to offer, but just walking around I was amazed. I would recommend for sure!

Great place to see the historic evolution of the place. If you are interested in vintage cars, TVs, electronic equipments, camaras, toys, etc. this is the place. It's free after 5pm to roam around which we did. Before 5pm there is a ticket to view the reenactment/recreation of different time period.

I had a fantastic time at this open-air museum! The 1970s section was especially enjoyable — it felt so familiar and was incredibly well put together. You could really sense the atmosphere of that time. I highly recommend visiting the museum during the 1970s period — it adds a lot of depth and brings the experience to life in a special way. At times, I did find it a bit difficult to tell exactly which time period I was in, so a little more clarity in that regard would have been helpful. The horses pulling the carriage were a highlight — they looked healthy, well cared for, and absolutely beautiful. Personally, I felt that the 2000–2014 period didn’t add much to the overall experience. I would have loved to see more from the 1950s or earlier decades instead. All in all, a great place to visit and definitely worth it!
