3 Best Day Trips from Berlin to Hamburg, Leipzig, and Potsdam | Condé Nast Traveler

"Potsdam’s only fish restaurant, Der Butt—literally, "the butt"—gets it name from the unfortunate moniker of the famously rotund Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. But don't let the name deceive you: This is a serious place. Situated in a historic house with a tavern from 1842, Der Butt is formal and buttoned up, with pale peach walls, wood chairs covered in striped pillows, and cream linen tablecloths serving as the backdrop for a menu that includes a wide range of upmarket seafood—Norwegian salmon, dorade, and even lobster. Our tip? Order something local, like the pike perch or the eel, both of which are sourced from the Havel River that runs through the city." - Liz Humphreys

We visited the restaurant today for lunch. It was a hot day. Unfortunately, lobsters were not available. We decided to have Dorade and fresh water fish platter. The dish was well prepared and well served. I wish the fishes had option to be grilled and not fried. Taste is completely different. The fried fish fillets were priced around €27 and Dorade was billed at €25. We had limoncello spritz which was €7.5 per glass. The surprise element of all was still water which was priced at €8. Pretty high especially for a restaurant without AC and when you start sweating within 10min of seating. The hosts were very polite and cordial.

I can't remember having had a better fillet of matie in recent years. I've had several varieties of this tasty fish and they were all buttery and delicious. The host and waitress were incredibly friendly and still had food for us even when the kitchen was closing. Thank you for the great food and service.

Excellent place for fish dinner. A bit pricey. Does not take credit cards.

We got there at 5pm and politely asked whether there was space for two. We were first kinda rudely told off and only given a table after the waiter and barkeeper had discussed our "case". The place is quite expensive, the shrimp soup with cognac was not enjoyable - too much cognac and too sour - while the grilled fish platter was fine. Also, you cannot pay with credit card, they only accept cash and debit. So overall, not a great experience, we will not come back.

Super friendly staff, delicious food, fast service. It may be a bit pricey but the place ticks all the boxes. As a Mediterranean guy, I would love to see more choices as starters but it is just for the curiosity how variety of tastes this chef can bring on table. This just became one of my favourite places in Potsdam.

Very unfriendly, and the food is over-priced for the quality. It's like they are trying to be a "fancy" restaurant. I also had the experience where the server was very rude when I wanted to keep my coat because I was cold. Condescending. Avoid this restaurant. There are many better options just a short walk away.

Yelp
Definitely worth a stop in Potsdam! Best fish dish I've had in Germany--make sure to order the platter to get the most bang for your buck. Other dishes worth noting include the seafood stew, salmon cream soup, and the cucumber salad. Very filling, but also super fresh and good.

Yelp
Excellent fish restaurant; everything is fresh, well prepared and beautifully presented. Local specialities are freshwater fish like rainbow trout, but there are also saltwater varieties available, and a handful of non-fish items for those non-pescatarians at your table ;)

Yelp
Most delicious appetizer and halibut. A must "go to" place. The Glindt whisky is great.

Yelp
Okay, I will admit that my colleagues and I chose this restaurant out of sheer juvenility; the name was funny to us. We were not even totally sure the restaurant would be there. We thought it might be a joke. Much to our surprise, Der Butt was a very nice, really terrific restaurant. It's not trendy, but it was a little more formal than a bistro. The food was the best that we has in this trip. I had the shrimp soup and grilled salmon. My colleagues had the fried perch. Everything was super fresh, really tasty and reasonably priced to boot. The service was just attentive enough without being overbearing. I would totally eat here again.

Yelp
This restaurant specializes in fish and regional techniques and ingredients. My dinner there was the best I had during a short trip to Potsdam. I was alone but the server was friendly and made me feel at home. I had the house special fish plate (fischteller "Der Butt"). It was a medley of pan-grilled fish from the Baltic and the North Sea, with lightly cooked vegetables and gratin potatoes. The fish and vegetables had just enough butter, cream, and fresh herbs. For dessert I had a dish that I've only ever had in Germany -- a medley of fresh red berries, raspberries etc., with cream and sugar, called rodde grutt. The drink selection is excellent, with a range of regional products. I had an interesting Sauvignon blanc from Germany, and then a calvados with dessert. All the dishes I saw going out to other tables looked very good, too.
