Perhaps my expectations were set too high for Der Kuchenladen, but I was a bit disappointed.
From outside, it looks absolutely amazing--beautifully decorated cakes beckon to you from the window, and all the pastel yellows, blues, greens, and pink welcome you into confectionery heaven.
Inside, it feels a bit like you're in a vanilla and strawberry cake--and I mean this in the best possible way. The seats are comfy, the tables decorated with flowers, and there's lively chatter all around. Definitely five stars for atmosphere.
The cakes, however, left much to be desired. The two of us shared a slice of Schokolade Mousse and a slice of Tiroler Apfeltarte. The mousse was much harder than I expected (it seemed a bit old), and the chocolate flavor was good but certainly not mind-blowing. The outer edge of the cake (don't know if there's an actual term for this), however, was top-notch. It was sprinkled with something toffee-like but I couldn't figure out what it was.
The Tiroler Apfeltarter was an apple tart covered with nuts and seeds. Seemed interesting, but wasn't as good of a combination as we expected. It probably would've been better warm.
OVERALL:
Great atmosphere (5-stars for sure)
Overrated cake (3-star quality)
Moderate price (around 3 euros to go, ~3,50 euro per slice eating there)
