After hearing from many sources that the Öschberghof is a great hotel, we wanted to try it out for ourselves. We booked one night in mid-August. It was a weekend, so we naturally expected a lot of people, but that shouldn't be a problem at a hotel that calls itself one of the 101 best hotels.|We arrived at noon and received a friendly welcome, but of course, our room wasn't ready. We then went to Donaueschingen and had a quick lunch there.|Back at the hotel, we were looking forward to the pool, which we wanted to enjoy in the nice weather. However, we received an email the day before our arrival stating that the pool area was unfortunately no longer accessible after 5:00 PM. We did not like that, as when we booked this was not announced anywhere. As we complained they offered us a small bottle of champagne in return. |However, at he pool we detected it was quite a small pool overcrowded with many people and already at 2:00 PM they started to do the setup work for the party later in the afternoon which we found annoying. Furthermore, the outdoor pool was completely full at that time because it is far too small for a hotel with 111 rooms. The number of loungers by the pool are also completely inadequate, and many of them had towels laid out but weren't occupied. It somehow brought back memories from the Balearic Islands, where this sort of thing apparently also happens - but we are staying at a hotel that calls themselves one of the best hotels…...|In a pinch, we retreated to the indoor pool (which is really spacious). But it was unbearable there because the kids were making such a racket.|There's no restroom in the upper pool area either, so I had to go back downstairs for that - also there are no visible signs where the restrooms are. |In our opinion, this doesn't meet a five-star standard, and it's certainly not one of the 101 best hotels. We think it deserves 4 stars, but not 5. |We're glad we only booked one night to test it out; if we had booked two or three nights, we would have been pretty annoyed. On another note we must say, that all staff was very friendly and helpful.|So far for testing Öschberghof, but this test was never what we expected and definitely not worth more than 500 EUR – the room didn't even have a balcony for that price.
