Gast - und Kulturhaus Der Teufelhof Basel (Basel, Switzerland) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Der Teufelhof insists it's not exactly a hotel, but rather a guesthouse and cultural center. Combining two historic homes just a stone’s throw from the Rhine, in Old Town, Basel, Teufelhof was founded not by hoteliers but artists seeking to subsidize their creative pursuits. While ownership has since changed, the philosophy is the same; Teufelhof sees itself as in the business of “brokering” interactions between guests and the humanities. To that end, a gallery showcases local photography and contemporary painting, an archaeological cellar offers a walk around ancient Basel walls and Teufelhof’s own theater fills seats for cabaret, comedy and more. A raft of dining options includes the casual Atelier, fine dining at Bel Etage, and a bar teeming with activity." - Tablet Hotels

We stayed 2 nights here , the location is great , accessible to few tourist spots . But I feel this hotel is really NO safe. I found out my suitcase was opened, but luckily nothing was missing. Our hotel room door was not locked when we return in the midday after lunch . Room already cleaned. I also found the hotel cleaner put back the used coffee capsules back in the coffee rack. We never noticed until I found the used coffee capsules . I try to make coffee , unfortunately my cup only filled with plain water instead of coffee and this happened several times . See the picture for proof.

Wow how lucky were we to find this gem of a hotel! Our first time in Switzerland and Teufelhof was the perfect way to spend the time. The service and employees were awesome. The location was the best. Love this place and it will be our go to every time!

Google
Wonderful hotel but there are a few buildings along the street so my only identifier is that it’s the building above the restaurant. I love the room and the rustic building with old school Swiss vibes. I loved my 3 course meal at the restaurant- highly recommended. You have to check in at the building on the right but the actual hotel entrance is the building on the left… a bit confusing but go with it. Close to all the tourist attractions in Basel. I did not meet or see any Americans in this hotel… EU travelers mostly. Parking is located 2 blocks away and it’s a bit weird to get to and to park but go with it… good experience.

Lovely stylish quirky building||Quick and easy check in. We arrived around lunchtime and was lucky enough to find that our rooms were ready. ||We were given a card to use on the public transport so we could use it for free during our stay and also get discount in some of the museums. Thought this was really good especially as we knew how expensive our stay in Basel was going to be. The staff helped us with which trams to get to the station. ||Staff on reception really professional, polite, friendly and helpful.||We were on the 2nd floor, lift just round the corner from reception. ||Lovely room. Very plain white decor but found it really calming. Comfortable bed and pillows and stylish furnishings. Did struggle to figure out the lighting so ended up unplugging half the lamps. ||No air con initially a concern but the fan was really powerful and personally didn't mind the sound of it. Could have the windows open as overlooking a quiet lane. ||Note just remember to lock the door from the inside when in the room. I did have someone try to enter, possibly management and say they thought I had checked out, just after my arrival. My room was at the bottom of a staircase not sure if that had anything to do with it but also had a child try to let themselves in. ||The bathroom was compact with just a shower but was stylish and well equipped with lovely toiletries and accessories. ||Plenty of storage. Luggage stand, tea coffee facilities, safe and fridge/mini bar. I think having somewhere to chill drinks should be standard at this price point as well as the safe so good to find them in the room. ||Hotel walking distance to the main square. It was quite a steep hill down to it but other than that the areas we visited during our stay were not too bad and relatively flat. A tram stops right outside the hotel. We used it to/from the train station. It wasn't too far away. Just 2 trams to get there. We got the train to Lucerne for the day, it took around an hour I think. Train station right in the centre. Lovely place stunning views. Well worth a visit in my opinion||When we were down on the main square it felt like there were trams every few seconds so don't think there would ever be too long a wait for one. Never seen so many trams in one place before. ||Visited the toy museum and the Kunstmuseum using the Basel Pass. Both in my opinion are worth a visit. ||I wish I had been there a bit longer to explore Basel more. ||We didn't use the restaurant or have breakfast during our stay so I am unable to comment. ||If I ever returned to Basel would be more than happy to stay hear again. ||

We were at this hotel for one night. I picked it before I realized it was going to be hot in Basel as the hotel was not air-conditioned. We took a cab to the hotel from the port where we docked off an AMA cruise ship. Cab fare was 30 francs for a short trip — my first experience with the cost of living in Switzerland. The hotel room was fine. Good water pressure in the shower and strong WiFi. Because it was raining out, we opted to eat at the hotel’s restaurant (after consuming the free drink that they offered outside in the bar area). The restaurant offered fine dining. Prices were high as is everything in Switzerland. I had the cheese ravioli, and although I paid more for it than I like, it was heavenly. Just delicious. We had couple glasses of wine, with what must be their standard 3 oz pour. Very inadequate, but probably standard there. When we walked in the room I knew we were in trouble. At that point, I didn’t realize that the hotel was not air-conditioned, but when I saw the fan in the room, I knew. A high point of our visit was the breakfast, at 25 francs each. It was very good. The buffet included rolls, yogurt, cheeses, meat, etc etc.

All fine but the bathroom is for small single . The staff was very nice even as well as check in even if there is not a real lobby (I arrived a few hours before check in time). The room was nice but the bathroom was too small.

Yelp
Loved this hotel! It is in a historic building with a brewery. The room was very nice and the bed extremely comfortable. The staff were very accommodating even providing us sandwiches when we had to get out early and miss breakfast! Big thank you to Saskia Strasser for all her help whenever we needed assistance! She was the best! Also it is right by the number 3 tram for easy access to Basel. They provide you with a pass for free fares too!

Yelp
If you plan to stay at the art hotel I would request not to stay in room 1. I was extremely disappointed in the art in room one, the regular hotel has better art and larger rooms for cheaper. The staff is very polite, but I left a sign on my door asking to have my room cleaned and another sign was left saying "sorry we couldn't clean your room."

Yelp
This art hotel is charming, with good sized rooms and great service. One item that stood out was our check-out experience. Normally, breakfast comes with the room. However, we had to leave for the airport 5:30am, so instead of just forfeiting breakfast, they offered (without us asking) to instead do a lunch bag for us and made the effort to have someone have it ready at 5:25am, before their front desk opened (like many European hotels, their lobby isn't 24 hours). Also, we chose a ham and cheese sandwich. However, they didn't give us a ham and cheese. What they gave us each was: a ham and cheese sandwich filling a large baguette, an extra cheese sandwich baguette, 2 apples each, 2 nectarines each and a bottle of water. So they threw in quite a bit more than they had to. Did I mention they also provided us with two all-day tram passes for each day as part of the room? Also, free WiFi that was actually quite good in reliability and speed (which is not always the case in European hotel wifi). So, overall, a good experience. It is however necessary to prepare tourists -- particularly Americans -- for a few items: 1. There aren't elevators in one of the two buildings that make up the hotel (it's a historic building), and the stairs are spiral and a bit off-kilter. They do have a bellhop who will transport it up, but after quite a while in Europe we had a lot of bags, and we felt a bit bad about it, particularly as we heard the rather in-shape guy wheezing his way up for two trips. If you stay and have luggage, ask specifically for the building with the elevators. 2. They have a heater in the room, but not air conditioning. As Switzerland is not tropical, this probably isn't usually a problem. Our visit coincided with a bit of a heat wave. However, we did learn it can get a bit toasty during the height of summer even in Basel, so if staying in July or August this might be a consideration. When asked, they did bring up a floor fan to help keep us cool, however. Overall, I recommend this hotel as it is also near the heart of the city, and convenient to most of the shopping and sights.

Yelp
A gorgeous Art hotel in the centre of Basel. The staff are very friendly and the service is excellent. The rooms are nice and spacious and the decor is clean and modern. The building itself is an older building with gorgeous wooden stairs and shutters on all the windows. There is a lot of art hung up throughout the building and almost all of it is for sale. The disadvantages to the room we had was that it was facing the street and there is a tram line and you can hear it. As the room did not have air conditioning we had to keep the windows open and that made the noise factor worse. There were no blinds in the room and so getting the room dark was an issue. Other than that this place was great. There are two or three restaurants in the place. The breakfast we had was excellent and eggs were cooked fresh on order. Free wifi was included with the stay and all in all not a badly priced hotel in Basel. The location is a 5 star for me as it is literally a 3 min walk into the centre of Basel and a 10 min walk to the Rhine. There are at least 10 great restaurants nearby and the street behind the hotel is a really gorgeous street to walk on. I would happily return here any day.

Yelp
Looking forward to trying this hotel next year as we had to cancel our trip due to the awful pandemic.

Yelp
Looking for a quaint quiet stay? This place is perfect. The rooms on the elevator side are indicative of a European Apartment. The windows secure any outside noise and the black out shades leave you with a full rested night. The confort of the rooms with the attention to detail which included some night time reading left me with wanting to stay longer. I especially enjoyed the simple and elegant dining. The breakfast was a perfect abundant continental style. Only stayed one night but i promise I shall return.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed at this marvelous hotel and were very pleased with our accommodation, service and great food. We received a delightful surprise in the mail: cash that we forgot to take out of our locked safe was returned to us in the U.S. from the Teufelhoe Team! What an outstanding gesture of character and good business. We highly recommend staying here. It is an ideal location as well.

Yelp
When I arrved, I was greeted by very nice, friendly and helpful staff. They gave me a glass of fresh homemade apple juice while I was being checked in...YUM! My original room wasn't available due to me getting there late so they upgraded my room at no charge. The room was spacious, immaculate and had a cool coffee machine in-room. It was one of the best beds and best rooms I've been given in Europe. Breakfast was good and checkout was easy. Again, the front desk staff were helpful and friendly and overall, the experience was great. I highly recommend this hotel if you want a hotel that is unique, close to shops and tram lines and very comfortable. I will be back!

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here in July 2016, and I never got around to writing a review, but I was so impressed with this beautiful hotel. By far, the breakfast packaged with the room was the best we had during this trip in Europe. Lox, eggs cooked to order, high quality prosciutto, cheeses, creme fraiche, breads, cereals, dairy, oh, and awesome espresso and coffee. We were in one of the suites and the room was spotless, spacious and gorgeous with super high ceilings, big windows, beautiful modern furniture and fixtures. The front desk and restaurant staff were highly skilled hospitality professionals. The hotel building was fun to walk through with art gallery style displays, and a cool basement bar with exposed walls that were part of the town's ancient fortress structure. Charming outdoor garden seating for the restaurant and bar. It's conveniently located in old-town Basel, so was fun to walk around and shop and dine. We weren't there during the theatre season, but it looks like they have plays there in the fall and winter. The only down side was we were there in July (for a wedding or we wouldn't have gone during the busy, hot summer). It was, I think, unseasonably hot and humid, and there's no air conditioning. Like I say, I think the weather was just unusual while we were there, and this is probably not a concern most of the time. We found the basement to be very pleasant and cold during the hottest part of the day.
