Bosnia & Herzegovina Travel: Best Places to Visit

"Blagaj Tekija, a 600-year-old dervish monastery at the base of a cliff by the emerald Buna River. There, I had taken off my shoes and covered my head and walked through the Sufi lodge's simple rooms, which were lined with pillows and rugs for worship." - Helen Schulman

Yes, the place is undoubtedly beautiful—especially the river, the view, and the architecture itself. However, the entry fee feels disappointing given the lack of guidance or explanation. You’re allowed into a few rooms that were used for prayer and rituals, but there’s no clear information about the historical relevance of the person associated with the site, nor is there a guide available. Honestly, you could simply visit the area and take great photos from across the river without paying for the ticket.

Great day trip from Mostar. Maybe a 20 minute-ish drive. Parking is relatively inexpensive, only a few marks. Tickets to the actual entrance are also reasonably priced and free for children and you can pay with card or cash on the day. The monastery itself is stunning, inside and out. Even in the blazing summer, the inside feels really cool and there’s space to pray. The view from the windows are unreal, with crystal blue waters right outside. The surrounding areas are also stunning - you must dip your feet into some of the coldest water you’ll ever feel. Worth getting a quick boat trip into the cave as well for around 5KM per person. The surrounding restaurants are also great.

This is something special. Astonishing scenery. Try to visit out of season where it's quiet and more peaceful. We had a lovely visit and a lady offered to guide us which added enormously to our understanding. 10km (4 quid) for an adult to visit. Remember to remove your shoes and ladies to cover their heads.

Nice place to visit, but some explaining would be nice before purchasing the tickets. If you are not religious you do not need to buy tickets as the view of the river source is visible from the other side. Restaurants have higher prices.

A monastry situated near beautiful flowing water and a cavern full of birds.. A testament to Creation itself. Simply stunning and worth the visit. You'll leave a little transformed and full of wonder.

This place was magical. It gave a sense of inner peace & tranquility. It was off season when we visited early April however the parking was pretty full. Dead end route, I would advise to park outside and walk to the monastery as it was not easy to make a turning once you arrived in there. The souvenirs were very affordable, do support the locals, cash only though.

The scenery of this place is truly magical. However, the visit was disappointing - basically you are walking around a bit with no guide or any explanations. The view from the monastery is not as interesting as the view from the other side of the river. The weather was a bit gloomy which added some dramatic effect to the scenery, but I am sure the place is beautiful at any time. Parking is a bit tricky as this is a narrow dead-end street full of stores, people, and cars, the navigation in and out can be very complicated.

Blagaj Tekke is one of the most serene and places I’ve visited in Bosnia. Nestled at the base of a cliff, right beside the source of the Buna River, the setting is absolutely breathtaking — a perfect blend of nature and history. The Dervish house itself is peaceful and beautifully preserved, with an atmosphere that invites quiet reflection. The sound of the river rushing past adds to the tranquil feel. It’s worth taking the time to go inside (modest dress required) to appreciate the interior and learn about the Sufi traditions. The area outside has some lovely cafés and spots where you can sit by the water and enjoy the view. It does get busy during peak times, but it still retains a calm energy. A must-visit if you’re in the Mostar area — it’s spiritual, scenic, and historically rich.
