Derwent House, Tamboerskloof, Cape Town, South Africa - Explore & Book

"Derwent House is a colourful, friendly and light-filled boutique hotel, which consciously embraces the spirit of the new South Africa. The hotel’s muted pale-grey facade looks conventionally Cape-Victorian, but to the rear a spectacular double-heighted loggia, a wooden-decked pool and 2 garden wings of rooms bring Derwent House straight into modern mode. Since our visit, a contemporary self-catering apartment has been added for those looking for a little more independence. Back at Derwent House, high, south-facing windows pour light into the open-plan lounge/diner, where angular leather sofas, kudu-covered chairs, huge Xhosa paintings and signed prints of Mandela’s Robben Island sketches, are juxtaposed with subdued white-and-grey walls and floors of buff sandstone. The brightness of the decoration is matched by the vibrant neighbourhood. Kloof Street is just around the corner, abuzz with cosmopolitan bars and restaurants, making this a fabulous base from which to fall for this fabulous city. Highs This is a great part of town: a stone’s throw from the bars and restaurants of Kloof Street Some rooms grab a view up to Table Mountain and its cable car The garden, with its shaded loggia and decked pool, is a great place to chill out, and the lounge/diner has an instant feel-good factor We loved the homely touches like the honesty bar and complimentary sherry and cake at teatime Lows There's been a change of ownership since our last visit, so we're yet to experience the hotel's latest incarnation first-hand You occasionally hear the comings and goings of other guests from the rooms in the main house Some of the rooms are a little on the small side The continual piped music in the dining area might not be to everyone’s taste No children under 12 are permitted" - Guy Hunter Watts

We stayed in a suite which was very spacious and clean, and the suite had great views. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and would go beyond their way to provide recommendations for tours and restaurants. The staff also made bookings for us. The breakfast options were also excellent and were included in the room rate. The property is a short walk to numerous restaurants in Kloof St, and we found it safe to walk in the local area. The guest house is also well secured. We did walk down to the waterfront in the day time which took around an hour. Uber was reliable and cheap - around 80 to 90 Rand to/from the waterfront. We also booked Uber to visit Table Mountain. We also relaxed in the common area with a courtesy bar to have a carafe of wine. Highly recommend Derwent House and will definitely stay here again.

After years of travel, it's rare to find a place that genuinely surprises me—Derwent House did just that.||||This 10-room gem tucked into Cape Town's Gardens neighborhood strikes the perfect balance between luxury and comfort. What makes Derwent House special isn't just the tasteful décor (though it is magnificent) or the enviable location minutes from Kloof Street's restaurant row. It's how they've created something increasingly rare in travel: authenticity.||||From the moment you arrive, there's a sense of belonging. The property feels like the stylishly appointed home of well-traveled friends rather than a commercial establishment. Common areas invite lingering—especially the sun-drenched pool area where afternoons seem to stretch deliciously longer than anywhere else in Cape Town.||||Breakfast deserves special mention—hot, flaky croissants and made-to-order dishes that showcase both skill and imagination. After a day exploring the city, return to sample South African wines from their well-curated honesty bar—a perfect education in local vintages without the drive to wine country.||||Yet what elevates Derwent House to extraordinary is unquestionably its people. Tash greets you with the warmth of an old friend. Gladys, Patience, and Bohym anticipate needs you didn't know you had. Simon's attention to detail transforms ordinary moments into memorable ones. And Luca, managing it all with effortless grace, offers insider recommendations that transform your Cape Town experience from tourist-standard to deeply personal.||||Each morning begins with personalized suggestions for the day's adventures. Each evening concludes with the feeling you've returned not to accommodation, but to a place that, however briefly, feels like home.||||In a world of cookie-cutter luxury and impersonal service, Derwent House offers something far more valuable—connection. This is the rare find that seasoned travelers hope for but seldom discover: a place that enhances your understanding of a destination while providing sanctuary from which to explore it. If I ever return to Cape Town it will be to Derwent House—not as a guest, but as someone coming home.

For a boutique hotel, Derwent House is absolute perfection. |The rooms are decorated in a way that personalizes each one separately. We stayed for a week and not only did our room feel like home to us but so too did the rest of the house, which was also decorated with a designers eye. On a rainy day we sat by the fire and drank Gin from the honesty bar, which was a nice touch. The pool area, including hot tub, were very clean and comfortable. ||Breakfast each morning was nicely done, with many options, and something we looked forward to each day. They even offered up a new special each day, which was a nice touch. Kloof street is nearby and there are so many great restaurants to choose from, like The Black Sheep and Miller’s Thumb just to name a couple. Sea Point and Camps Bay are also a quick uber drive away. Overall, the location was perfect. ||It really was the people managing the house that made it so special. Everyone was so very nice and helpful. Luka was fantastic to chat with and always willing to help us out. ||We travel a lot and we’ve stayed in some very high-end places, but The Derwent House is easily one of my favourites. I highly recommend it!

We stayed here for 2 nights and had a wonderful time. The staff could not be more helpful. We loved the welcome drink and the tour of this beautiful house. Our room was clean and super comfortable. Hot showers, blow dryer, espresso maker and 2 balcony’s were appreciated. We also loved the buffet breakfast and hot breakfast options available every morning. There was also wine, beer, gin and tonics and snacks available all the time with the honor system. This hotel is also just a 3 minute walk to Kloof street where there are plenty of nice restaurants, bars and cafes. Secure parking is also available. We can’t thank the staff enough for making our stay so comfortable.

We spent two very pleasant nights at the Derwent house. We found the staff to be extremely friendly and accommodating. They provided excellent sightseeing recommendations, dinner options, and made reservations for us on both nights. The room was very clean and the house itself is wonderfully eclectic and comfortable. Daily breakfast was plentiful and delicious, as well as, made to order. The daily cocktails and gin bar was an excellent touch and a perfect way to relax before dinner and after a day of sightseeing. There are multiple restaurant options within walking distance to the house and we felt safe in the neighborhood, even at night. We definitely recommend the Derwent House when in Cape Town.

Fantastic stay at this boutique hotel - staff were amazing and Luca (GM) so helpful, giving us many tips for our stay, including the booking of a driver for the day to take us to Cape of Hope. Lovely room with a view of Table Mountain and appreciated the turning down of beds, water and chocolate each evening.||Great breakfast - cooked to order - highly recommend the pancakes and the omelette. Nothing was too much trouble here - highly recommend.
