It recently dawned on me that I'm woefully behind in trying all of the alleged "best pizza in Nashville" contenders. I have my go-to places for pizza when I'm in the mood for it, and often I end up with something cheap and fast (and close to home). So on this past weekend, my spouse and I decided to rectify that and start trying some of the best pizza in the city. DeSano was our first "new" (to us) pizza place to check out. The verdict? It's really good pizza.
We kept it simple and ordered the 3-meatball appetizer and the "Pepperoni Dopio" pie (grande so we could take some home for later).
Dining in, as other reviewers have mentioned, is casual: a series of indoor picnic tables in an open air warehouse sort of environment with full view of the wood-fired pizza ovens and the folks preparing your meal. The meatballs were out quick for us to eat while we waited on our pizza. Great flavor and texture, if they could have been a touch warmer. The bread served with them was excellent for sopping up the rest of the tasty marinara.
The pizza is served straight from the oven on a thin piece of paper atop a baking tray. Our first pieces were still so hot from the oven you could taste the wood-fire on the crust. The crust is terrific, thin(ish)-hand tossed width, pockets of air from the fresh dough being worked. The buffalo mozarella has a terrific pull, and is super flavorful. The Pepperoni pizza comes with two types of pepperoni, both delicious. Great flavor, great texture. The sauce is solid+++. I will definitely try this pizza again, and likely many of their other varieties as well.
This is probably a 5 star place with the right factors in place. When we dined (July 2022) the bar was closed for renovations and the drink options were limited--just a few basic cans, bottles (mostly domestic major brewers) and a few liquor choices. I wanted a draft craft beer as I'd read they had quite the variety, and found out that was a no-go so stuck with Pellegrino water. Prices are a tad on the pricey side (but more than fair for the quality of the pizza, just the other things add up--but it's basically a recession so no real blame there). It wasn't very crowded midday on a Saturday, and the atmosphere is super-basic but friendly.
