On the Grid : De La Mer

"You really can't go wrong with fish. Unless you over cook it, as the flowing calligraphic wall script reminds you as you peer into the giant windowed kitchen. That's where the helpful staff come in, dropping knowledge on how best to cook your globally sourced seafood, with what sauce, for how long and for whom. But that can wait, while you take a minute to enjoy the beautiful and detailed interior design, the wooden crate installation literally climbing up the wall and the fisher-gentle-men-esque vibe that'll make you wish you were 'of the sea.'" - Kev Seto

I miss Currys but DeSerres has been great for variety and proximity to home. It is my new art supply store and saves me travelling downtown. My daughters live the selection and trying new mediums. I like the framing section.

Google
A great art-supply store that offers both fine-arts level products as well as hobbyist-level. Plenty of kid-friendly offerings as well. Pleasant and knowledgable staff.

my mom and i went in looking for art supplies with no idea what to get and the employees were so helpful! one woman literally walked around with us for 15 minutes and showed us everything we could get (and the cheapest ones too!!) and gave us ideas on how to improve my original idea! 10/10 customer service! 😊

Art supplies store. I like that shop. It's convenient and affordable. I got everything there when I was in my Film school.

The store is great! And all the ppl who work there are fantastic and nice and smile and don’t make you feel uncomfortable … except one girl with the short hair, even when my 24 year old daughter goes in she said the same thing? That this girl does not smile.. she makes you feel like you’re not welcome? Cold and she stares at you? I’m a very friendly person, maybe that’s just her personality but wow!? Really? And trust me I’ve smiled? Say hello? I’ve said bye and nothing from her? And Because of that.. if I see her I working I turn around and we go else where. Maybe someone can make her smile? lol

Nice little art store. Good selection of paints, brushes, etc for painting. Other art supplies and craft materials. Tidy and calm, pleasant shopping.

Staff are always helpful and will walk me right to the location of the supply I am looking for. Prices are a bit higher than the big box store that is American, however, I don’t mind spending a few extra pennies to buy from a Canadian retailer.

Walking into DeSerres Danforth is like entering a bizarro world where art supplies are a myth and customer service is a low-brow performance art. The store's staff, armed with a bleak indifference that would make even a nihilist blush, seem to excel at making customers feel as welcome as a smear of acrylic on a masterpiece. When you ask for glaze or gold powder, you're met with vacant stares or dismissive shrugs, as if you’re speaking in abstracts rather than art supplies. It’s a peculiar talent, making a customer feel like an unwelcome stain on their pristine bubble of apathy. The help here isn’t just lacking—it’s practically avant-garde in its non-existence. Expecting guidance in this shop is like hoping for a detailed explanation from a toddler about quantum mechanics. They peddle their $10 felt markers like snake oil at a carnival, promising discounts that vanish faster than the enthusiasm from the faces of their clientele. The only masterpiece you'll leave with is a profound critique of disservice, a memorable experience of feeling like an unwelcome intruder in a store that should be a haven for artists. So, to my fellow artists, consider this a dire warning—venture elsewhere for your art supplies, and leave DeSerres Danforth to its performance piece of customer neglect. Trust me; it's not worth the entry fee of your time and patience.

Yelp
I've been coming to this DeSerres for ages, and the staff are always really kind and knowledgeable. The prices are a bit steep, but that's to be expected of good quality art supplies. One thing that annoys me, and the reason I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5, is that the paint price lists can be a little misleading. They always put the price for series 1 paint (the cheapest) at the top, in a larger font, then all the other (higher prices) are listed underneath. Most of the time they don't organize the paint by series number either, which adds a fun level of tedium to every visit. Besides that, it's a pretty solid establishment, and I'm glad to have a local art supply store.

Yelp
I'm indecisive between a 3 and a 4 star rating for Deserres. They had the good art products that artists need, and to me it seemed to be decently cheap canvas. They had the good quality paints such as Windsor and newton as well, and golden acrylics. Some stuff did seem very expensive though. Signing up for their creative club is a good idea though, especially as a student, as you get double the points on their points program. Service however isn't too good, as they have university art students, and I, being another student, was surprised that they didn't offer help when my arms were full of stuff. But they were friendly at the cash. The store is also well laid out, even with all the other crafts products there, which seemed to be good too. It was more straightforward to find stuff than at Michaels, where everything is everywhere it seems to me. Overall a decent store and I'll definitely be going here more for supplies :)

Yelp
There is a huge variety of good stuff here, and it's usually fairly straight forward to find what you are looking for. The people are friendly and helpful most of the time. We keep coming back.

Yelp
Great store-- just know the store has moved to west of coxwell and danforth, and not open right now. Potentially opening early 2017 is what I read somewhere.
