"Ghent's Design Museum If you like your art to have practical purposes, don't miss Ghent's lovely Design Museum. Here you will find decorative arts such as furnishings, appliances and dishware from Belgium's design history. The museum is inside the 18th century Hotel de Coninck, once owned by a wealthy Flemish family. One section of the museum is preserved as it was during this period. A new and modern section of the museum houses functional art from other periods, including Belgium's most famous design era - the Art Nouveau period. There are many things to see! I was impressed by the combination of old and new and their efforts to make children not bored. And the staffs are really kind. For me, it was almost perfect but I was wondering if they should rely on leaflet for providing information

I liked it a lot, but my friends had mixed opinions. It houses a curious mix of design and contemporary art in a fine old building. The exhibition focusing on the interaction of humans and animals was thought provoking and the most effective aspect of the museum.

This former city Palace has been transformed in quite a big museum with a more modern wing. The collection gives you the highlights of the evolution in design furniture and housing. And the kids have to search for some hidden playmobil toys during the tour.

Small museum but nice pieces of furniture. A little trip thru the centuries looking at different types of furniture. The building the exposition is in is beautiful definitely also adds to the visit. It will take no more than an hour to see

My 8 year old really wanted to visit the robot exhibition. We both enjoyed it. It's a good place to visit even if you don't speak French or Flemish as all the exhibitions have information in multiple languages including English.

Museum exhibits very modern and contemporary pieces of art and design in a city palace of 18th century. All the exhibitions look very good.

Love the interior. Tasteful exhibition about robots at the time. Really friendly guide. She was lovely and eager to learn. Relevant information in the tour.

Brilliant museum. Despite the bottom two floors being shut. Great exhibitions and reasonably priced. Second visit as it made such an impression. Block out 2hrs to see it properly. Good place to escape a rain storm too...

Yelp
The Design Museum was mentioned in a New York Times article about Gent that came out shortly before my trip to Belgium. I bookmarked it because we were planning to spend a full day in town. While I do enjoy a variety of museums, this particular one didn't really hold my interest. That's not to say it won't hold yours! If you're someone who loves a behind the scenes look at how things are made, or you want to know about different textiles and other materials, furniture design, etc. you will love this place. I saw some interesting things in an exhibition about fibres and plastics, but the museum as a whole didn't leave me wanting more. To each their own!

Yelp
Didn't expect to come here, but they have a sweet deal. Free admittance for under 19 y/o, and 2 euros for those between 19 and 26, I think. 10 euros for regular adults. Time recommended: 1-1.5 hours Exhibits: they currently have an exhibit on the interaction between humans and technology, which is by far my favorite. I'm not much of an "artsy" person and you won't catch me at a classical museum, but seeing how modern technology (in the past, now, and foreseeable future) is designed to interact and enhance our everyday lives is fascinating. There are other exhibits, like furniture design, some classical paintings, pottery, but nothing memorable.

Yelp
Right off the bat, I will admit I am not much of a "design" type. Certainly I have a style, and I know what I admire, but maybe its not necessarily what is hip or up to the standards of the design community. That said, I also don't necessarily see why some things are so special when they don't appeal to me. But art is subjective, so I just have to remember it's always a matter of taste. As for the Design Museum in Gent, well, it's pretty fantastic. I visited when two specific exhibitions were on display: Pieter De Bruyne (Pioneer of Postmodernism) and Destrøy/Design (A selection from the collection of the Frac Nord-Pas de Calais). Both I liked, for different reasons, but the one thing they had in common was that they made the viewer think critically about the art. There is also a permanent exhibition, which I wasn't as fond of. Because it was all in Dutch, it was hard for me to figure out what the "point" was, or the common thread holding things together. A few pieces here and there caught my attention, but mostly I breezed through it. Still, if there is a special exhibit here, I recommend stopping by. I spent maybe 30-45 minutes here, but people who are more art-minded might linger through the four floors even longer.
