I have always been a fan of Tequila Tapatio and to be able to experience the Distillery (June 2024) in person was nothing less than magical! La Alteña was founded in 1937 and is still owned by the same family and to this day continues to be traditionally made, which is how it should be! I contacted La Alteña months in advance to secure a spot for a tour and the very lovely Lizbeth Coronado was assisting me. Lizbeth answered all my questions and would always email me promptly. She was a pleasure to communicate with! When we arrived, we checked in with security and they directed us to the main building, while we were waiting in the lobby, I spotted the one and only Carlos Camarena, the VERY well known and well respected 3rd generation tequilero and Master Distiller. Our guide arrived and we began our tour. We had the honor of tour guide being Gabriela Camarena! She was incredibly sweet and down to earth. You can see her passion come through, her love of the agaves and her family’s distillery is very obvious! I was truly fascinated with her explanations and attention to detail throughout our tour. At the end, we sampled various expressions and she detailed so much about the tequila that we did not know. Once we were back in the main building, we spotted Mr. Camarena and he too was very gracious and allowed us to take several pictures with him. I could not recommend this distillery enough, very highly recommend if you are ever in the area! My dad’s side of the family is from Los Altos region and I feel extremely proud to know that some of the best Tequila in the world come from this region!
