This Is the No. 1 U.S. State Park in 2025 for Hiking—and It Has 30 Miles of Trails, Rock Formations, and a 360-acre Lake

"Offering nearly 30 miles of hiking trails, beaches, dramatic 500-foot quartzite bluffs, and a 360-acre lake, this park features scenic rocky overlooks and multiple trails that draw hikers year-round; I found the 4.8-mile West Bluff Trail and the more challenging 2-mile Devil's Doorway Loop especially rewarding for views of impressive rock formations. Located about an hour from Madison in Wisconsin, it’s the most popular state park for hiking per Google Maps and is also the top-ranked Wisconsin state park on AllTrails with more than 10,000 positive reviews." - Michael Cappetta Michael Cappetta Michael Cappetta is a travel writer with over 10 years of experience in journalism and television news. Beautiful place! Get to the parking lot by 9 am on a Sunday! And hope you don't need the bathroom until after the cleaning through is done. Blah! The gift shop/concessions open at 10 am. Both beaches became packed very quickly. The hikes are amazing but don't underestimate the climb or over estimate yourself. You don't need to be a pro, but hiking shoes, walking stick and lots of water is highly recommended! I didn't camp, just visited for the day.

What a view? The view from the top of the cliff was absolutely stunning. There is a Trail that takes you all the way to the top where you can see the entire lake. When you enter the park, the admission fee is $16. You can enter and exit the park as long as you have the ticket on the dashboard. You can enjoy the lake using the paddleboard, canoes or kayaks. There is a fee for that and I believe it’s $38 for a ride. There is a visitor center and a nice big store where you can buy merchandise. Best times to go is June and July because the weather is nice and warm. Besides enjoying the lake, you can explore the trails take nature walks or simply sit and read a book by the lake. When I went there a few days back I was surprised to see how clean the area was, and the breathtaking views of the Devil lake. So if you haven’t visited this place yet, I feel you should put this as your bucket list and make sure to visit this place as soon as you get a chance! 😃

This is one of the best places I have ever hiked! Amazing and breathtaking, I dont know a person who would not love those trails. Amazing atmosphere and breathtaking views! After I hiked took a railroad path back and there was a very nice people singing as the pinnacle on the wonderful day 🎵

A beautiful place with an amazing view. There are both easier and more difficult trails — we chose the harder one because we wanted to see the view from above the lake. I saw an eagle soaring over the lake for the first time — it was truly magical. Make sure to bring plenty of water and be prepared for the uphill hike. Also, wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the rocks can be slippery.

Honestly, this park kicked my butt 😂. Was good tho. Plenty of bathrooms. The trail was very 'natural' and the paths I took, like Tumbled Rock, was actually pretty fun! The other, West Bluff...oof...was an actual 'hike'. Want a challenge? Take West Bluff. The 2 trails I took were not handicap accessible and may be a challenge for kids. Don't wear tennis shoes or any shoe with a flat bottom, as it will cause you to slip on the many rocks. I Didn't visit the beach but, it was crazy busy. There was a place to rent kayaks and such, but i didn't do that either. All in all, a great 'Natural' park. I plan on going back to see more!

We stayed in the park for 4 days. Listen, we are Michiganders. Getting to the camp site is a steep hill. It's a workout! The sites are nice, mostly private but also on a slant. Stuff rolls off tables if you are not careful. The showers at the non-electric sites are gross. There is a button to turn on the shower. No temp control and the water lasts about 60 seconds, so you have to keep pushing the button. Hard to rinse out your hair that way. The lake was gorgeous and the hiking was amazing. It was a difficult a advertised. The camp store had all the amenities you forgot and then some. I would camp here again, but I'd definitely hike.

I’ve come to the south side beach twice and it is just absolutely breathtaking every time I go. The water was so warm. I came the first time on a Saturday and it was packed. People everywhere and I was lucky to find a spot outside of the lot on the road. The second time I came on a Wednesday midday. Super chill and very little people. No gas powered boats on the water made for a wonderful experience. We have an inflatable intex raft that was so fun to take into the lake. Lots of paddle boarders and kayaks on the water as well. Concessions on the south side had a lot of things to make a kid happy. A new favorite spot to come and relax for the day. Will have to come camp one day as well!

Devil’s Lake State Park is one of the most beautiful state parks in Wisconsin. This park is extremely busy in the summer months. If you want to go to Devil’s Lake on a Saturday or Sunday in the summer, you need to get there early to get a parking spot. We would highly recommend hiking on Tumbled Rocks Trail. We also slightly prefer South Shore over North Shore because South Shore is typically less busy. We also really like the dog beach on South Shore. if you were hiking up to Devil‘s Doorway, we do not recommend Pothole Trail. You literally are taking the stairs directly up the bluff the entire trail on Pothole Trail. It is not for the fainthearted, and it is not very fun. We would recommend taking East Bluff Woods Trail up to Devil’s Doorway. It is hard to write one review that encompasses everything that is in Devil’s Lake. There are many different things at the park that are really cool and very different from each other. We highly recommend that you visit this park though.
