I’ve been to DGB a couple times. As a waiter myself in Oslo—and since Drøbak is close by and a lovely place in its own right—I enjoy visiting.
I went back yesterday, but honestly, if it hadn’t been for the owner (not the male waiter "taking care" of my table), it might’ve been a very different experience.
I was seated at a tiny table outside—I’m guessing because the waiter assumed I was just there for a drink—so I wasn’t allowed to sit in the shade (understandable, reservations, only 1 diner at a table of 4, etc...I do get that).
The first interaction was in English, yet I was still given a Norwegian menu.
When my dish arrived and it became clear it would be difficult to eat comfortably, the owner kindly asked me to move to a shaded, proper table (meant for 2 diners, it was available from the beginning.)
My beer was over well before my food was finished—empty glass, and no water offered ever. I had to ask the owner for water toward the end.
They’re small things, but as a waiter myself, I couldn’t help feeling a bit neglected (ignored) by the staff—except for the kind owner, who made some difference with his kind personality.
At the end of the day, I guess I should thank you—this experience reminded me to be even more attentive to my own diners. These little nuances can really shape someone’s experience independently of the quality of the food.
