I Visited South Africa 10+ Times Last Year—Here Are the Best Hotels, Restaurants, and Safari Experiences I Recommend to Anyone

"A swooping, elliptical football stadium that has become an icon of the city since it was built for the 2010 World Cup, visible from the harbor and in the silhouette beneath the flat-topped mountain." - Chris Wallace Chris Wallace Chris Wallace is a New York-based writer and photographer. We recently visited DHL Stadium, not for its famous rugby matches as the home of the DHL Stormers, but to attend the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon 2025 expo and collect our race numbers. Even though Cape Town is known for difficult parking, we were pleasantly surprised to find ample parking bays, clearly marked and easy to access—a rare treat! The stadium itself is an architectural marvel. As we walked the short distance from the parking area, the impressive structure loomed above us. Stepping inside, we were greeted by breathtaking views: rows upon rows of seats stretching up towards the blue sky. We were so captivated by the scene that we paused to take photos, momentarily forgetting our original purpose. I even caught a tear of awe in my wife’s eye, the lush green pitch behind her providing a stunning backdrop to her vibrant outfit—a memory I’ll never forget. The expo beneath the stadium was spacious and well-organized, easily accommodating the 25,000 runners collecting their numbers. There were a wide variety of stores, restaurants, a beer garden, and more, making it a lively and enjoyable experience. Entrance and exit points were clearly marked, with pathways guiding visitors smoothly throughout the venue. Visiting DHL Stadium for the first time was truly mind-blowing. I highly recommend it to any tourist or local—whether for a sporting event or another occasion, this venue is worth experiencing firsthand. I’m already looking forward to next year’s marathon and another visit to this remarkable stadium. Thank you, DHL, for providing such a fantastic landmark in Cape Town!

Watched the Springboks take on Australia here and it was an incredible experience. The atmosphere inside the stadium was electric and the view from the stands was excellent. The facilities are modern and the stadium itself is world-class. Only downside is that getting in and out can be a bit slow with the traffic and parking, but overall it was well worth it. Definitely a great place to watch live rugby in Cape Town!

The tradition of experiencing every year’s 7’s is very quickly wearing off unfortunately. It feels more like a private party for 1 stand, with the usual and often inaudible ‘performers’ having a great time at the expense of the other 2 thirds of attendees & the rest of us feeling like a 3rd wheel. I’m thinking that efforts are made to improve inclusion of all attendees but often felt “iffy” and a bit more miss than hit, wrt overall entertainment. Big miss, I felt was the Dj battle, the bar experience rather strange where we found staff demanding at times for tips, beers inside that had to be bought 2 at a time? Many stalls with warm beverages and some without select beverages? It’s still an iconic event and magnificent stadium venue that feels safe and secure, with City of Cape Town present and even measuring wind speed, checking Ohasa and risk, etc, awesome stuff but…but feels a little ‘iffy’, a bit hit and miss, and not inclusive enough for the families. Perhaps time for a reboot, Karl tries his best but seemed frustrated at times, Superman was having a blast and improving his publicity, so it’s sounding unfair of me I’m certain but I’m super proud of Cape Town and all its attractions but let’s get that stadium full at R120 p/ ticket plus, rather than half empty at R250+, surely, and let’s get entertained by more cultural diversity and experiences that we can all tap our feet to, and sing and dance with, please.

We went for the Stormers vs Bulls rugby game. We have to give credit where credit is due, City outdid themselves with the management of the event, from the friendly staff at CTICC for parking, MyCiti buss staff for quick rides back and forth to the stadium and the smiling staff of the stadium and vendors alike. Well done on pulling off such an amazing event and showing off a worldclass city!

What an absolutely gorgeous world class stadium. Well maintained, clean and excellent security. We were at the business lounge for an event and had a great view of the field. It was my first time at the stadium and after seeing how beautifully looked after it is, I will definitely be returning for a sports match!

Went here to watch rugby, and what a place it is. The crowd, the atmosphere, the people working here and the entire stadium is amazing. If you’re lucky, there will be an outdoor party after the game which was hell fun!!
