After walking about the ruins such as the Palace of Galerius in the vicinity for a little while, we returned to Diagonios after 12:30pm and we were given a choice to sit outdoors or indoors. As the weather was good outside, we chose outdoors. That was an excellent move because by the time we left, all the outdoor seats were taken up.
This time, we ordered the meatballs (Soutzoukakia – 8.5), the gyros (200g pork – 8.5), cucumber/tomato salad (5 euro) and a local Thessaloniki wine (4.5). We must say a big thank you to the SKAI crew who introduced us to Diagonios because the meatballs were the best we’ve had in a very long time!
When the dish arrived at the table, it was first the smokey fragrant aroma that attracted us and when we got in for the first bite, it was juicy and flavoured with a good mix of spices. We loved it! Just one thing to note though, they’re not really shaped as “balls” but more like a fat sausage. So while we were expecting “meatballs”, more of a “meat sausage” greeted us. Still, definitely a must-order if you’re in Thessaloniki...
