"One of the most recognizable sites in Hawaii, this volcanic ash cone overlooks Waikiki's coastline—a tectonic memory from an explosion half a million years ago, measuring almost 3,500 feet across. British sailors named it Diamond Head in the 1800s, mistaking calcite crystals in the crater’s soil for jewels. Despite its volcanic grandeur, the ascent takes most hikers an hour or so, clocking in at 560 feet of elevation gain and 1.6 miles round-trip. At the top, on a clear day, you can see all of Oahu's south shore, from Koko Crater and Waikiki to the mountains of the Wai'anae Range."

Back in May 2021 Strongly advised to make reservations before attending! Also keep in mind there's only a small parking lot before entering. So expect to pay for parking inside the park if you're heading there in a vehicle. We parked there instead and the trail was well paved the entire way albeit mimicking a rock formation which helped with grip. There was a small incline along the entire trail. The trail is not smooth enough for strollers; Expect it to be hot, so take some water and don't underestimate it. You'll experience several bunkers on your way up. Near the top you'll be given the option, loop around or go up a set of yellow stairs. You'll get greater fulfillment from going up the stairs first and then looping back around on the way down (but again you know your body better so listen to it). Once up the yellow stairs you'll get welcomed by a spiral stair case to take you to the top of the large bunker with beautiful views. Must visit monument if you willing to climb up 🧗 Good luck visitors.

We also received very light rain which was welcome. You'll experience several bunkers on your way up. Near the top you'll be given the option, loop around or go up a set of yellow stairs. Must do if you come to Oahu! Definitely make reservations and pay for parking in advance. The small lot fills up quickly. The earlier in the day, the better. The hike is on rocky terrain and can be very difficult if you do not wear proper shoes. There is a narrow tunnel that, at times, only allows 1 direction of foot traffic at a time due to the smaller opening. In busier times, this will cause the hike to take longer as you have to wait. Once you get to the fork in the road, GO RIGHT UP THE STAIRS. It seems steep, but it's the shorter distance, and you get straight to the top faster. The views are breathtakingly beautiful of Waikiki Beach, and the crisp teal waters shine as the sun brings out their beauty. Recommend this for any age level, but if you have mobility issues, it will take you a lot longer.

Diamond Head State Monument is an iconic natural attraction in Honolulu, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and city skyline. The hike to the summit, spanning around 1.5 miles roundtrip, provides visitors with a rewarding experience, as they ascend through historic military tunnels and bunkers while surrounded by lush landscapes and volcanic rock formations. The trail is moderately challenging, featuring switchbacks and a final staircase climb, but the unmatched scenery makes every step worthwhile. This historic crater, once a military lookout, is now a beloved destination for both locals and travelers. Early morning visits allow for cooler temperatures and spectacular sunrise views, while midday hikes showcase the clear, unobstructed vistas of Waikiki. While the trail can get crowded, the well-maintained paths, educational signposts, and designated viewing spots enhance the experience. Visitors should bring water, sunscreen, and proper hiking shoes for a comfortable journey. Whether you're capturing scenic photographs, immersing yourself in Hawaiian history, or simply enjoying the fresh ocean breeze, Diamond Head State Monument remains a top-tier attraction for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and history enthusiasts alike.

We loved everything about our time here. The reservation system worked fine and we got in and had no problem finding a parking spot. The experience of driving through the tunnel in the crater was pretty unique. There are restrooms and water fountains by the gift shop, and the trail to the top of Diamond Head is clearly marked. There are other trails available, but we only did the one to the top of Diamond Head. It certainly gets rocky and uneven in spots, so good shoes or boots make a difference. The hike gets a bit steep in places, but it's not a long hike. It's pretty much full sun, so a hat or some sunscreen would be a good idea. Incredible views at the top - hard to overestimate how impressive they are. Getting to go into a WWII anti-aircraft post is pretty cool too.

A nice hike. Paved trail with some rough uneven rock segments. Railings available, easily traversed. Provides stunning views of Waikiki. Closes at 2pm during weekdays. Call ahead to confirm. Reserve time slot on line.

Beautiful views. Definitely make reservations in advance and if you get the last time slot (4pm), like we did, make sure you get there exactly at 4 PM if not earlier. We rolled in at 4:30 PM and we’re in a time crunch to get up and down the crater. Also, we normally do our hiking in sandals, and with the rocky terrain, shoes definitely would have been better.

It was a cloudy day and it drizzled during my visit. Because of the cool weather, it made the climb much easier. The route condition towards the peak is well maintained and safe. The peak at the Diamond Head is not too crowded and we're able to spend a little more time enjoying the view and the breeze. Missed the sunny picturesque view but the cloudy conditions create a different spectacular perspective of Waikiki beach. Definitely a trip worth making. Do remember to make a reservation for the entry ticket and if you drive too coz there are limited parking spaces. If you wish to take a walk out of Diamond Head State Monument, I did it as it took me about 40 mins to arrive at Waikiki beach from the ticketing office. And the good thing is...it is a continuous downhill walk to the beach area!
