16 Best Swimming Holes in the U.S.

"This string of pools linked by small cascades on New Hampshire's Lucy Brook in Bartlett is a popular spot for families in the summer thanks to its easy accessibility via a short hike. The trail can get wet, so waterproof hiking shoes are recommended. When the water levels reach peak flows, which vary throughout the year, the setting puts on a fantastic natural show. It does get crowded, so come early if you want to photograph the pools without anyone in them." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Great swimming holes, great short hike for young ones and older dogs. We went on off season so it wasn’t crowded but I can’t imagine it’s as enjoyable with a full parking lot.. would probably be very hard to find your own spot where we had a pretty big swimming hole all to ourselves pretty much

A good hike for anyone - not to challenging until you get to the baths and then there's rocks to climb over and lots of roots! It took us maybe about 20 minutes to hike up there. Which my friend and I who are in our mid 40s did pretty easily. It was beautiful! I will definitely go back! Wear a swimsuit and bring a towel - if you have the ability to carry a couple of folding camp chairs and a picnic, it could really be an amazing experience. Set up near or in a pool and let some of the freshest water on earth wash away your worries! We were there in August and the water was very safe to enjoy as it wasn't too high. There were a lot of dry rocks to navigate across. There were some slippery areas, so I would recommend bringing some water shoes, as well.

An absolute must visit, hidden gem about a half mile walk or so into the woods on a well maintained pathway. Restrooms are available at the entrance to the trail, the walk itself is not demanding whatsoever. A fairly easy walk for most ages. You must purchase a one day park pass in the parking lot if you already don't have one. It's only a few bucks and can be used at other local park areas. This location is probably 5 or so minutes off rt16 North Conway. If you visit North Conway, this is an absolute must see. Swimming is ok in the summer, although I'd call it more relaxing in natural rock pools.

Superbly over-hyped falls. Water is at the low point and one needs to walk 1.2 miles up down to have a glimpse, quite tough if you have elders with you. Parking fee is $5. The trail is absolute wild and one can feel the silence of the woods but the waterfall is too small. With some quick dip ponds one can feel the water.

Diana's Baths was a cool place to check out in the White Mountains. The hike is a simple half mile walk in the woods which takes about 20 minutes or so. You are then greeted with an amazing view of the cascades and water rushing through. I highly recommend visiting here!

I visited with my teen daughters, best friend, and her teen daughter for memorial day this year. It was beautiful. It's a short wall in wooded area, maybe 10 minutes before you get to the waterfall. It's very serene. You can climb up along side the waterfall or you can climb on the flat rocks running along the waterfall. There was someone swimming when we got there, and it definitely seemed like a great spot to dip in the water. It's got plenty of shade on the paths and plenty of paths to explore for awhile. It can be a short walk just to check out the waterfall, take a dip in the water, or hours or exploration. It's a nice place to have a picnic, take the family or friends and just spend the day there. If you're in the area, be sure to check this place out. There's also a decent amount of parking. Everything about this spot is simple, peaceful, and relaxing. There's cell service here as well, so you don't have to worry about not being able to keep in touch with people while you're visiting. Enjoy the peaceful sounds of the waterfall, or put on some music and make your own vibe. Either way this a great spot to hang out and enjoy nature without the physical exertion required to get to a beautiful view such as this one. 😊

Went on an overcast weekend day and pretty much had the place to myself. Some rocks were slippery but overall it was an easy “hike”. I could definitely see how it could get busy though. Beautiful and tranquil - wish I had brought my bathing suit and packed a lunch! Note that the parking pass gives you entrance to other parks so keep your ticket!

Went here for a mothers day hike. All 4 generations had fun from the kids to my grandmother, who is in a wheelchair. The trail is well maintained, and with a little help from family members, my gram was able to go almost to the top to view the falls. The view was great, and the kids had fun using a new plant identifier during the whole hike. The only down side was we planned on having a picnic lunch there but they only had 3 tables 1 near the falls and 2 right at the front across from the park bathrooms which are permanent Porta-pottys and it smelt like something died in there and if the wind shifted it was not an ideal spot for a quick picnic meal. The fact it was under a mile walk to the falls and how maintained the trail made it truly enjoyable as my gram often can't come with the rest of us, and we will definitely come back with her.
