Oh the beautiful sight of over a hundred types of whiskey & spirits of all kinds entranced my eye as I entered the door of Dick Macks, the most famous pub in Dingle.
The booze is to the right as you enter the main door, whereas the boots are to the left!
As is the case traditionally in Ireland a lot of bars double as general stores & other businesses, I've even drunk in one or two that double as undertakers!
Despite it suggesting haberdashery as it's "other life" on the outside window, I couldn't see any ribbons & buttons, but there were an awful lot of gents boots & assorted nick-nacks.
It was like one of those living history museums recreating 100 years ago, and I was so taken with the cluttered beauty of it all that it never struck me that it's still a real cobblers in the day, (I've clearly been in too many theme bars)!
I believe old Mr Mack died a few years back, but his family still run the place & keep the tradition going.
Anyway back to the whiskey! It's only a small bar, but a narrow corridor takes you through into a snug beyond with a nice fire going. It's ever so lovely, probably horrendously packed in the season, I was here in October and it was still busy, live music here as is the case with all the other bars in town.
In a town that apparently has more pubs per capita than anywhere else in the world, Dick Macks was my favourite pub by day here, and I was happily positioned like a local at the bar, letting one or two small ones give chase to my leisurely pint of Guinness!
Outside on the pavement the stars are out whatever time of day you visit! David Leans great movie Ryan's Daughter was filmed locally, as was Tom Cruise's Far & Away, but the less said about that the better! A walkway of fame recalls the likes of Robert Mitchum & other stars who've apparently enjoyed the facilities, (though Mitch is supposed to have famously riled the locals with criticism of said facilities)! Julie(?)Roberts also puts in an appearance here!
Of course it's always going to be busy, even the outside bit, but it's really worth going in to this magical domain, but be warned by the hypnotically colourful shelves of spirits jostling with each other for your attention.
Wonderful bar!
