Take a Jurassic Road Trip To These 13 Dinosaur Parks

"Ever since learning of their existence, we’ve been piecing dinosaurs together, taking them apart, piecing them back together with different heads, naming them, debating them, and renaming them. In the 1800s, competitiveness in the field of paleontology led to some hasty, not-so-accurate identifications, and occasionally downright fabrications regarding these Jurassic giants we are so anxious to know everything about. With advances in genetics and other research methods, we are now learning all kinds of new things about the colossal vertebrates that could have laid waste to the strip malls that inhabit their old stomping grounds – and many of the mistakes that were made before these advances are now being corrected. As museums rush to correct and update their displays, there is a place in South Dakota where the dinosaurs will remain forever inaccurate, frozen in time. Dedicated on May 22nd in 1936, Dinosaur Park was one of the earlier thunder lizard-themed tourist attractions, and its depiction of the massive beasts reflects a fun and almost naïve take on them. Five figures shadow the landscape, cartoonish faces that look like googly-eyes were glued on, all peering out of the same bright green skin color that a child might associate with all things reptilian. The Depression-era sculptures were designed with the hopes of catching the tourism run-off from Mt. Rushmore and were made from concrete with iron-pipe frames, making them exceptionally sturdy. With regular fresh coats of paint, they are pretty much exactly the same as they were 70+ years ago. The growling-grinning green giants depict a Brontosaurus, Apatosaurus, Triceratops, Stegasaurus, and Tyrannosaurus Rex, all life-size, and are still a favorite of tourists. One of the rare displays that encourage kids to climb the dinos, Dinosaur Park is very popular with the under 12 set, who really don’t care if the Brontosaurus has the wrong head, as long as it’s smiling." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Cool place for some dinosaur history and knowledge. My daughter would have loved it as a child, she might even loved it still. Super kid friendly with a ramp and stairs to access all the displays and it has a dirt hiking trail around the area as well. Visitor center is typical visitor center at places like this, all the typical souvenir and maps and magnets and things like that. Although they do serve some hot dogs and sodas if you're hungry. I was only here for about 20 minutes or so. Doesn't really take long if you're just walking around but if you have kids then you could be here for an hour or so. Overall fairly decent place to take the kids to check out some dinosaur history not to mention it's free.

Google
A nice historical park with about a half mile or less loop to walk and read about a half dozen dinosaurs. Established in 1936 and recognized by the Department of Interior. The park has been improved in recent times to provide for accessibility ♿️. The top of the hill offers some of the best views of Rapid City.

Google
Even though it was pouring rain when we were visiting, we had such a fun time with our grands. It really is a darling place and you can see so much of this beautiful city from the top! Just fabulous. Thank you ♥️♥️♥️

Mary Lynne Ketcham

Google
A group of us hiked up at night. The paths are well lit and are paved. We had beaviews of the city at the top. If you have children, keep in mind there are a lot of concrete stairs. Some elbow and knee pads might not be a bad idea. The visitor center was closed when we went.

Google
Was in town from Hot Springs to see a movie (Jurassic Park rebirth). Figured I'd get there early and check out the park. Nice walk to see all the statues and read all the info and history. Some nice views from the top as well. Gift shop is really nice, sells hot dogs and snacks as well as ice cream. If you are in the area and have some time to spare definitely stop and check it out!!!

Google
This park hold decades of memories for my family and seeing the updated path and handicap accommodations made my heart full! The views of Rapid City from here are unmatched! A MUST GO for all dinosaur enthusiasts (big and small). :)

Google
Lots of stairs and an option to use a ramp. Very nicely redone. Kinda threw us off T. rex doesn’t have hands/claws Lol. Great view from the top

Google
This was an unexpected find! We stayed at the Days Inn around the corner and woke up early looking for somewhere to go. This place came up on GPS and we are SO thankful! This was a beautiful sunrise spot and it was very unique. Our son loved the statues and we enjoyed the view and fresh air. The facts at each stop were interesting as well. Great little hidden spot if in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
A hidden gem! You can come for the tacky dinosaur statues. However, you will be fascinated by the stories about how our understanding of what they looked like has grown over the years. And you'll stay because of the breathtaking views of Rapid City and the surrounding area. It is worth the few minute's drive from the town center and the somewhat challenging walk up to the top.
google avatar

Day D.

Yelp
Great experience! A workout to get up there but well worth it! We were able to explore, have fun and take amazing pictures!!
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
Really fun walk if you like dinosaurs! If you don't, it is still a great view of the city from the top. Truly a must see! I'd imagine sunset or rise would be beautiful from there.
google avatar

Annette B.

Yelp
If you're visiting Rapid City, you must make a stop at Dinosaur Park! You'll get a little exercise walking to the top, but it's worth it. There are fantastic views from all sides. There's also a great visitor center with lots of goodies.
google avatar

Al P.

Yelp
Very cool park with dinosaurs, tells a little about the history of the park. Great views of South Dakota. Highly recommend

Yelp
What a fun free beautiful stop. The drive down and around skyline drive was awesome! We spent the day before this stop at Reptile Gardens (we left a review there too, check it out!) and we were getting hangry! So we saw they had a snack stop at Dinosaur Park and decided to head over eat something smaller and get a little mini hike in to see the dinos. So the area is under construction but there is still plenty of parking for the time of year we were here, end of summer, beginning of fall. They are making some needed updates so that is exciting to see in the future! The park is free. The snack shop/ice cream has a cost. We all enjoyed hotdog specials and a couple corn dogs and let me just say, it was nice that our family of 8 ate for $34! Food was good for a quick thing. The walk is directly across the street so we went and did that and enjoyed those 100 mile views a lot. It was an easy light short hike that the grandparents and the baby and kids could make without being exhausted. Definitely good for all ages. We went back and enjoyed their ice cream and shopped a little in their great gift shop. I was so impressed with their selection of fair priced souvenirs, especially the shirts! I grabbed a cute one for myself for 12.99! It isn't going to fall apart either, it was the same quality and the same shirt i actually found for $27 at another larger tourist site. So my recommendation is to go to the gift shop and grab you some treasures here or else you are going to spend twice as much elsewhere! We visited so many places and this was one stop we really thought was perfect and of our day relaxing stop. Not to mention the sweet ladies inside were so kind and amazingly patient with our large crew! *end note: bathrooms were great. Clean! The place is very well kept up!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
I mean it's "free" so that's pretty cool. The dinosaur statues are located at the top of a scenic hill offering scenic views for miles in multiple directions. There's only a few statues, but the park is more about the view. There's a nice gift shop at the base of the hill. I'll go back to this as a fun spot to visit with the littles with the sweet admission price of "free".
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Free park with great views of the city! We visited from out of state and had read great reviews and agree the place is a good stop to make. A good way to stretch the legs after a long day of being on the go. The kids enjoyed it and so did we.
google avatar

Katelyn C.

Yelp
Stopped here as a joke but at the very top there is an AMAZING place for pictures! We all had fun seeing the funny looking dinos but l'm so happy I got some cool pics!
google avatar

Lori R.

Yelp
A cute little place created back in the 1930's. I love the whimsical statues and beautiful views. I was there prior to the visitor center opening, but the park was open. It was a clean place and had clearly been well loved. Did I mention it's free! There is also free parking.
google avatar

Tank G.

Yelp
The park is beautiful. Has a scenic view overlooking the city. There is a visitors center right across the street where you can hang out. They have a patio area in the back and benches out front where you can sit. Parking here is pretty simple. There is a lot at the welcome center and a cross with with a stop sign to help get you across the street to the park. The park has some steep stairs, so you have to be able to navigate stairs to get up there. It is also compact. You can cover the entire park in less than 5 minutes. This is another free attraction in Rapid City, so you can't go wrong there. Plus one of the few attractions that are open during the infamous off season. The dinosaurs are a bit dated and could probably use a little TLC, but are still entertaining. It is open late and not only has a breathtaking view, it is a good workout too. I spent about 15 to 20 minutes here and was glad that I made the stop

Julie F.

Yelp
Hiking trail access. Under construction to make park more accessible. Quirky. Well stocked gift shop with snack bar.

Sydney M.

Yelp
Was a fun experience with a great gift shop that has a lot of dinosaur related things as well as gemstones. You can also get some ice cream there as well! Currently the stairwell up to the dinosaurs is closed for renovations but once you get up there there is 4 dinosaurs you can see, the view is amazing though and overlooks rapid city
google avatar

Sean N.

Yelp
The dinosaurs are a little worn down but still overall in good shape. Got some fun photos and its actually an amazing view of the city. Definitely a fun stop on the way to Mt Rushmore and Keystone.
google avatar

Albert H.

Yelp
Beautiful day at the dinosaur park. It's a super basic park but a small hike up the hill through many of steps allows you to basically see all of Rapid City. It allows for some awesome panorama photos of the City. My three kiddos enjoyed seeing the dinosaur exhibits and climbing on some of them as well. You can literally see very far east toward Box Elder as well as West and the hills. We were not able to see the museum since it was closed for the season--opening May 1. We will definitely be back to see the museum when it opens again. They also do have a trolly that runs seasonally over the summer that you can stop at. The road leading up to dinosaur park is worth the drive as well. It should probably be a monument in of itself. Parking is pretty easy at the visitor center and there are plenty of trails leading off and about the area that you can hike on.

Annie B.

Yelp
From my childhood memories to my children...this is a must stop! If it's your first time to the black hills you won't understand nor appreciate how classic this attraction is...your loss!
google avatar

Karen J.

Yelp
The Depression Era dinosaur park! Some are still recognizable, but they're also happy fun. The winding road up to the museum had some neat city views, but it didn't seem like a place to stop the car. The back porch of the museum had some nice views. There were a lot of steps to get up to the dinosaurs that were up the hill. They're built pretty sturdily built and kids were climbing all over them. There were Pokemon Go pokestops and gyms!
google avatar

Phillip D.

Yelp
Great place to go see the surrounding area. Our kids enjoyed looking at the dinosaurs, but they REALLY enjoyed climbing around on the rock areas. It was a little cold, but that to be expected in early May in South Dakota. Free is the best part of this place. Parking was easy.
google avatar

Moni L.

Yelp
Cute park but not much there. If you want to see some of the city from up the hill it's worth the short drive. The dinosaurs up there have been there since the 1930s - go read your history and maybe that would make it more interesting as the little building connected to the park wasn't open, not sure if it will be open at any time. You can take your dog up the step stairs to get up to see the dino's and their are paths to walk off from the cemented walkway. Be careful as it could be icey up there.
google avatar

Kayla C.

Yelp
It's not the most amazing thing you'll ever see but it's been around forever and hold a dear spot to my heart. My parents took me to see it as a child and now being able to take mine is even better. Kids love it and it's quick and free so how could parents not?!?
google avatar

Connie H.

Yelp
It's free. It's cute. It's touristy. If you like touristy dinosaur things, this is it. It's a bit out of the way though, so if you don't have extra time, skip it. Chances are you'll only spend up to 30 minutes here taking pictures and that's it. I can't imagine spending more than that here.
google avatar

Maya M.

Yelp
What a cool thing to hike up to alone or with some friends/family. Ive been coming here for years and its always so peaceful and makes a great addition to Rapid .Its one of my favorite things about our city. They still look pretty good for as old as they are... I hope they stick around for many years to come.
google avatar

Oren P.

Yelp
Very popular spot - for tourists, children, dinosaur lovers, and locals looking at developing "weather", or one of better views along Skyline Drive of Rapid City below.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
If you're looking for americana art this display is right up your alley. My husband had gone when he was a small child and felt that I really needed to see and be a part of that adventure. I'm not sure what else to say about it they're concrete dinosaurs. At least it's free, for now.
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
Cute park. You can tell it's been there a while but it's free! There is a visitors section that sells cheap hotdogs and pop. Nice quick snack. Nice visit for the kiddos and beautiful views.

L R.

Yelp
Awesome park, especially for dino lovers. You do have to get out of your car and park amd climb up lots of stairs to see any of the dinos up close
google avatar

Tara L.

Yelp
Enjoyable experience for me and my daughter. Nice views from the top of the hill as well. Nice family outing.
google avatar

Jennifer E.

Yelp
Great FREE place to stop to let the kids play. My kids loved climbing on all the dinosaurs and it was a great view of the city and black hills from the top!
google avatar

Steph R.

Yelp
Dinosaur Park is a nice free attraction in Rapid City. The views are great, and it's neat to take pictures on the same dinos that both my mom and I did as kids! The gift shop has a very reasonably priced snack bar, and the souvenirs have some of the lowest prices I've seen. We always enjoy eating a snack on the back patio taking in the views of Rapid City.
google avatar

Leslie H.

Yelp
Worth the drive just to have a birds eye view of Rapid City and the Black Hills and a photo with the Dino's are free. The gift shop up there has things for a reasonable price and was quite nice.
google avatar

Teejay B.

Yelp
This was a total adventure! My boyfriend and I went to rapid city to visit Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse but were completely fascinated by this giant dinosaur we could see from our hotel room. It was up on a hill and so out of place but we needed to know! On the way back from MR we saw a sign that said Dinosaur park, exchanged the glance "let's go!", and turned on to the scariest road ever. For what seemed like twenty minutes, we drove through houses on basically a mountain top. Winding around all the trees, we honestly thought we were lost until FINALLY we reached this parking lot and saw the sign. This was the strangest thing we did on our whole trip. The dinosaurs were massive and made of concrete with green paint chipping off. These things had to be ancient and there were only 7 of them. It was such a pointless park but for some reason, it was so much fun! If you're looking for a strange adventure, head to Dinosaur Park. If you can find it...
google avatar

Shelley V.

Yelp
Fun, free place to visit while in Rapid City to feel like a kid and play out your inner Pee Wee's Big Adventures and have both great photo ops and vantage points of the city from different sides. It's a slight climb to the top but nothing strenuous and the dinosaurs and kitschy and charming. I really was glad to have stopped by here. I also realized that I could see the Brontosaurus from our room at the Alex Johnson the next morning!! Great free excursion !!
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
This was the perfect family stop for those looking for a Black Hills 'roadside attraction'. It was worth about an hour to get a hot dog, burger and stretch out legs. Prices for lunch are cheap (food is so-so but ice cream is great). Pros: it has great views, excercise and is just touristy enough. It's also mostly free. Cons: it is off the main road about 7 mins and the road would be a challenge with a camper.
google avatar

Jenna S.

Yelp
We actually went here on purpose on our road trip and it was just as quirky as we had hoped. I didn't count the dinosaurs but maybe around 7 or so? I'm not sure if you're allowed to climb on them, but we did take some awesome pictures. I did go in the gift shop and thought it was cute. Touristy= definitely. For a photo op alone, you should definitely stop here. Pack a lunch and enjoy the peace and quiet in this little dinosaur park. So glad we came.
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
If you're going to Rapid City with children then you must add this to your list of places to visit. For starters it's free. Also, it's easy to find. You can see the dinosaurs on top of the hill from almost any part of town. There's a nice gift shop by the parking lot that has hot dogs, sodas, and ice cream. We always stop in there after we're done. When you get there you have to hike up at least 60 stairs. At this time there is no ramp for handicap accessibility. So that's kind of a bummer but I hear they're going to work on that this winter. Once you're up by the dinosaurs you can walk around them, stand in front of them, or climb on top of them. I'm not sure if you're really supposed to do that but everyone does. The view from the top of the hill is spectacular. You can look all the way out to Ellsworth Air Force Base to the east & to the west are the Black Hills. On some week days you can see The B-1 bombers practicing taking off and landing. There are lots of things to do after you visit Mount Rushmore and this should be one of them.

Katie A.

Yelp
Climbed in the snow, worth it for the view. Can't wait to make it back again in better weather
google avatar

Marionasie 1.

Yelp
For starters, this place is free so this a big +. It is a nice little place and the dinosaurs are fun to climb. It is neat that this place has been around since 1936, but, the dinosaurs could use a paint job. The gift shop is pretty cool and the view is spectacular from all the way from the top. Would come back soon.
google avatar

Jerod M.

Yelp
Considering this is a free attraction, you really can't give a negative review. This was extremely exciting for our 2 year old since he is going thru a dinosaur stage. The views off Rapid City are fantastic from the park, and if you have kids its a great place to let them burn off some energy. It isn't very big, but there are lots of steps to go up. It is definetly worth the "Free Admission" price
google avatar

Nina L.

Yelp
Dinosaur Park was a fun (and free!) stop on my family's South Dakota trip. It provides great views of the city as well as neat, although well worn, dinosaurs to climb on and pose with.
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
How fun! Not only do you get a panoramic view of the beautiful Black Hills surrounding this park (Shall we talk about the steps up to the top? Kidding. They're not bad at all!) but you also get... DINOSAURS. Whether it's a "we need to stretch" stop on a long road trip, or a post-dinner-and-drinks "Hey, Let's go Play With The DINOSAURS!!" idea... it's a good one. This is the true meaning of "Roadside Attraction." There's no concessions, no product placement, no entry fee.... Just some kitschy gigantic DINOSAURS on top of a hill with pretty views. Which is pretty awesome.
google avatar

Maria B.

Yelp
I have to agree the best part is the panoramic view! There are about a handful of dinosaur statues for the kids to see or a quick photo op. We walked to the peak of the hill.... be warned there are occasional gusts that cam take a person by surprise. Just a nice way to kill some time
google avatar

Drew F.

Yelp
Very cool spot with an awesome view of the city...I enjoyed myself out there and it was all good spot for some drone shots if you have one!
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
While this place is kind of fun, the hype makes it seem better than it is. It took our family about 10 minutes to walk around to look at the dinosaurs. The view is lovely, and the "park" is definitely a throw back to the 30's, when most of it was constructed. It was a nice local diversion, but not worth making a trip for.
google avatar

Wade R.

Yelp
An awesome view that splits Rapid City in half. Built in the 30's, the lifesized dinos were built before scientists understood their locomotion. They are all reprensented dragging their tails. It's a nice hike and a beautiful place to watch a sunset.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Fun place to take kids, great view of Rapid CIty in all directions. Easy to find - you can see it from just about anywhere in town. My husband remembers eating donuts up at the top of the hill with his grandpa, and we take our kids up there now. Fun and free. (One caution - lots and lots of steps, and they can be ICY in the winter.)
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
The stairs are steeper than they look. Be careful. Wish the handrails were higher! Great view of the city! Didn't realize South Dakota had so many fossils until we came here! Super cool!

Danielle E.

Yelp
Wonderful! Perfection! Funtastic! I'm 24 and just loved this park :) we drove about 10 minutes out of the way to visit around 7pm and there were still plenty of people around. You can see the whole thing in 15 minutes and capture some cool pictures :) the stairs up are a little steep but it's a cool view from up top

Monica H.

Yelp
This was a fun pit stop to get out and let the kids run and climb and see beautiful views. If you struggle with stairs you should skip it though, there a lot of them! Little gift shop was nice, excellent customer service and delicious slushies.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
The name doesn't mislead. It's a park full of dinosaurs. They are not pretty dinosaurs, or biologically correct dinosaurs, but they are dinosaurs. And they are awesome. They're arrayed on a fairly steep hill, with a parking lot at the bottom. If you're driving through Rapid City, it's definitely worth a stop to catch your breathe and take in the views. And the dinosaurs.
