Nature and Parks in Athens

"Five miles away from the city, on the west side, lies the biggest botanical garden of the eastern Mediterranean. With over 4,000 plant species from every corner of the world, this is an excellent spot to connect with nature. This is the only botanical garden where you will see some of the plants mentioned in Greek mythology and the Bible — even the poisonous plant conium maculatum, which was used to kill Socrates. The garden is divided into seven thematic yards and a greenhouse, all of which offer a different experience of colors and aromas depending on the season you visit. The garden is also a haven for wildlife such as foxes, hares, ferrets, and owls. The site never gets packed, but make an early start to savor the nature’s awakening. By the entrance, a homey cafeteria — and an ideal meeting and resting point — serves snacks, desserts, and beverages. You can visit the premises every day between 8:00 AM and sunset for free." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Huge fenced in park. Part of it has species of plants from all over the world, labeled in Greek and Latin. Part of it is natural forest. There is a wildlife conservation area, play areas for kids, and a memorial monument. We had a long, delightful walk in the shady forest listening to cicadas and birds. Close to the entry there is noise from the road. There is a large café with a nice playground. Many of the playground features are constructed by the staff from wood culled from the park. The café has food and drinks. Accessible by transit (we took the metro and a bus), an e-ticket is required for entry and it is free.

A nice place for a peaceful walk! The entrance is free and you need to acquire an online ticket for acces! The guy working at the gate was kind and with a good attitude. The left side of the botanical garden was more interesting in terms of diversity, how exotic the plants were and how they were organized. While the right side felt more like a chill hike in the woods. Wasn't impressed by how the whole garden was managed. It didnt have many greenhouses and the few ones we saw were not even accessible. The cleanliness and clarity of the ponds in the asian side was poor. However it is a great place to hang out with friends, for a cute date, a walk, a bit of jogging or even bring kids and explore with them the wonders of nature. There is a hike trail of around 2km, a cafeteria and a nice park for kids. And a few lovely cats that are super friendly! They follow you everywhere if you are kind and loving with them. We walked for a bit over than 2h without going on the long hiking trail at a slow pace and we still didnt get to walk on all of the paths. So I really recommend the place if you want to immerse yourself for a few hours in a corner of nature! :)

This is a beautiful garden! The flower garden area is especially lovely, the useful herbs, bamboo, fruit trees, pines, cypress, etc. are all marvelous. The variety of plants and trees is enormous, from every part of the world, and all are labeled with the scientific name in Latin and Greek, as well as the Greek common name.

A truly wonderful place! Very well kept, safe and peaceful. Highly recommend you take your own drinks etc, there’s a cafe besides the garden, but not accessible from within. Book online before you go - they allow 300 people at a time.

Excellent family and scientist venue. Plenty of room for kids to enjoy, plenty of spots to rest, take photos, enjoy nature. Clean, well kept paths, helpful personnel, cafe/restaurant with kids playground, toilets, area maps installations, picnic tables and benches. Couldn't be happier. Do not forget to book a ticket in advance (free during weekdays but online booking required). Parking spots right across the entrance (on the road) but you do not have to worry where to park.

A brilliant and peaceful place to visit. The minute you walk in, you forget that you're actually in the city. Walking around is probably one of the best choices you can make for a day that will make you feel really good. A beautiful cafe with nice coffee and snacks just next to the entrance is the option to get back some of the energy spent to see all the beauty. 5 stars is not good enough!! You'll love this place!!!

I recommend visiting the botanical garden when it is not too hot. It is very large with many species of plants and many trees. Bring water and a sun hat. It is beautiful and welcoming.

My husband and I try to visit at least once each season to see the landscape as it changes.. You can take a great walk/hike here with beautiful views over Athens from the top of the hill. There are so many species of plants, flowers and trees to admire and wildlife too. Really a superb venue to feel nature all around and a nice break from the concrete of Athens 👌😊
