Discovery Museum

Free public museum with lots of info about North East history and contributions to various industries. Lots of great kid friendly areas and exhibits. Good spacious cafe with great service, a bit letdown by quality of food and drinks available which could easily be improved. All in all a great family friendly museum with lots going for it. Would recommend and suggest donating to keep these kinds of charming places running for the public and will be visiting many times to explore more of it 👍🏽

Great FREE museum. They have two different play areas for kids under 5 year olds. They also have a little kitchen and book area in the cafe to entertain your kids while you enjoy a coffee. A lot to see, we didn't get to most so we will be back in the future. Not very busy on a Tuesday.

Loads of history if you are interested You'll be amazed how much is preserved about the pride of the North as I call it. Not crowded. Easy and fun ti navigate. Courteous staff.

A perfect place for a family outing- to learn about the North East history and evolution with times as well as the science behind Power Station and Electricity.

Great place to visit and it's Free with just a very welcomed donation

Took a train ride with the children and had a under 10 minute walk to the museum. It is free to enter, wheelchair accessible and pushchair friendly, they have places to park your pram or pushchair. They have a cafe. Plenty of things to do, lots to learn and see and plenty of interactive things. 3 floors to interact with, our children range from 2 to 14 and they all enjoyed it. Highly recommend

Booked in for a activity that was making a madel around a moving sphere so we could pick up recycling. It was a small booking fee for adults and child and the 4yr old could come for free. This was harder then I expected but we had a lot of fun and the staff were amazing with both children. Especially since the youngest went rogue controlling the sphere and kept trying to eat the ladies lunch. They absolutely loved this

Free... free... for free. A amazing place to visit better than other nearby museums with respect. Loads of exhibits and things to enjoy inside. Loved the challenger 2 tank outside. Loved walking through Newcastle over the years. No pressure to donate just a few stations scattered about unmanned asking for donations. Staff where helpful and friendly and with it being big your never too close to other people and you've time to absorb and enjoy the exhibits.

Great day out packed full of interesting things to see. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and always enjoy a visit, learning something new about the local history each time. With free entry, and in town, it's definitely worth including it in your day travels.

Another nice and interesting museum in Newcastle, definitely a city of cultural delights. The Discovery Museum mostly focuses on telling the story of the city and of the Northeast in general. It goes through the good times and the bad times in the city, including the coal mining boom, the poverty, the World Wars, the politics, everything is covered. There are real life examples- interviews with real Newcastle people over the years, and plenty of interesting memorabilia as well. It's a very cool place. There are also sections devoted to science and technology, and the discoveries made by people from the area. There is a good café with excellent prices, and a nice little shop too. A big advantage of this museum for families is that the exhibits are quite interactive, and should keep children interested as well. Best of all, it's all free. However, if you can, please do donate to keep important institutions like this one accessible to all.

This is a great free musuem near central station with parking outside. The first thing you will see is the turbina which is was the first steam powered ship. It has loads of information about ship building in the area. Upstairs there is a walk through the ages of newcastle from the time of the romans to modern day. There are interactive games to take part in. There is a fashion area with dresses from the victoria era and the roaring twenties with clothes for the kids to dress up in. There are displays on the local engineering feats of tyneside with george stephensons achivements highlited. There is a nice cafe upstairs. A lot of money went into this place recently and it is great place to visit when you have a free hour

This is a super place to take kids when its raining outside or you want to give them something educational to do rather than taking the to a soft play centre or such like. The Discovery Museum is a real credit crunch beater as it's free so you can still afford to have lunch in the cafe or treat the kids to some little learning toys in the gift shop. The cafe is quite expensive but because the museum is free that doesn't matter so much. There are lots of hands-on activities to keep you entertained and it also helps kids learn more through play. Super day out and its free!

I home educated my children for a year and this is one of our favourite places to spend a couple of hours. The Museum is free of charge, so rather than trying to cram in loads of info. in one day you can come and go as you please. If your on a low budget then I would pack a picnic, the cafe is a wee bit pricy. The shop is also a real pull for kids but theres some lovely quirky educational toys and bits in there. Upstairs you will find a room dedicated to the pre schoolers with wet play and also our favourite; the science room, with loads of interactive displays and fun learning experiences. Fun, fun and more fun!

This museum is FREE yes FREE to everyone,there loads to see for all ages, theres parking spaces if you come by car but its only a short walk if you arrive by metro or bus. the cafe is just a little expensive. The staff are helpful, this is a good place to come if your lost for something to do on a drab day, children can have fun while learning.

Fantastic free music. Great for kids and adults alike. Lovely exhibition area with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Nice tea room too. Well worth a visit to find out about the local history.

If you want to have an enjoyable afternoon with the kids then try the discovery museum.It's good for all ages and there is lots to see.Being free you don't have to cover it all as it can be a hike if you have little ones or oldies who can't walk that well.A god all rounder for all ages.

Free entry, city central (ish) and full of local history. We took an adult couple to the museum for a nose round and they really enjoyed it. Kids nearby enjoyed it too. Nice display about Newcastle through the decades. Parking nearby not too bad. I am not sure how easy it is to get around with prams or wheelchairs

One of the best museums in the region by far. Hours of free fun for the children and you can even take your own packed lunch. There are designated tables and chairs for packed lunches which is a good thing as the cafe is expensive.

It is the first museum in Newcastle which I visited with my new friends from Edinburgh. It is centrally located, very close to Chinatown district and the famous Gate centre. The admission is free and there are three floors of various exhibitions: the history of the city, the soldier's story, the story of Tyne and the history of fashion. The most attractive items are the ships and ship samples. It is a peaceful and relaxing place to spend a weekend afternoon.

I went to the discovery museum last weekend and although i was impressed with the free admission, i thought the exhibits for adults were a bit thin on the ground. Don't get me wrong, its a splendid place to go if you have kids, plenty to keep them amused, but I don't think there is much for adults. Its in a good location, near the central train station so is pretty accessible to visitors.
