The seriously sad case of discovery place science.
Once upon a time, deep in the heart of the Queen City, laid a sparkling gem, a glorious representation of a cutting edge city, fast on the rise.
Now, these mysterious men and women of science have taken on a bold new strategy. Frontage has been replaced by darkened windows, vacant spaces and ill-fortuned vagabonds. If you brave yourself across this graceless Tryon entrance, it will have been for not - for it has been relocated to the rear (not unlike everything else inside), as has the formerly impressive gift shop.
The new makeshift front desk (around back) leads you to a new makeshift gift shop. Neither retain any semblance of their predecessors quality of wonderment. Most disastrously, the depressing gift store area takes the place of what was once a happy and spacious cafeteria. If you've ever spent a day a discovery place, you'll understand the importance it's relief played.
Alright so you've gotten through the door. Congratulations. From here it's about treading water. The main floor exhibits are generally nonfunctional - there always seem to be one or two things out of order - or have been reduced to a minimum - the jungle habit area has hardly enough on hand for a hut, let alone anything interesting.
Many of the activity areas in the small children's room have been discontinued or downgraded. The water area has been stripped of most of its function. Just another bleak reminder: it ain't what it usedta be, kids.
If you'd ventured to the top floor of this science-centric building pre-pandemic, you would have found a creative arts & crafts area. Now, strap on them thinkin' caps, folks, cause it's gonna take every cell in those brains to create anything from the remaining supplies. I'm unfortunately not joking here - pieces of cut up t-shirts, pieces of cut up packing boxes, and old brochures. That's what you're working with.
I could perhaps go on - shortcuts and trimmings proudly adorned every corner - but what's the use. Might as well cut this short too. Such is the world we live in - where quality holds no relation to the return on investment of the American dollar.
I hate, HATE, strongly dislike leaving such a review as this. But jeez it might be just about time to start holding those that accept our money accountable. This place meant so much to me growing up and has been such a valuable place to bring my children up until recently. It contains within those walls the ability to be a magical place once again.
