I used to come here at least once a week in the years coming out of the pandemic. It's a free public workspace with wifi and really nice bathrooms, conveniently located, what's not to like? They also used to have weekly gatherings every Thursday with free drinks and food.
But after a while, I started going other places to work. DH's problem was that it never seemed to develop a critical mass as a workspace, there were a few other regulars but never for long enough to connect. And while the space, especially the second floor, is well-designed and refined, it also feels a bit sterile.
Recently, I've noticed the lounge is now closed on Thursdays, and the upstairs no longer has desks to work at. There were only a handful of people there on my last visit. They still AC the bejeezus out of it, tho.
So, it seems like the whole thing is winding down, but I'm not sure who is doing the winding. The ownership setup is strange. It's in a building shared with CIC, but I'm pretty sure they don't run the space. The districthallprovidence.com website goes to Venture Cafe's website, so they just run the programming and event-space rentals, but there is no mention on the website of the lounge any more. The Thursday events, now monthly, seem to have stopped in November 2024.
I guess it's inevitable that any service, even a high-quality free one, that doesn't attract a dediated user base is not going to survive in the long run. I did really like the idea of this place being a hub for RI startups and small businesses, but it's hard to develop a sustainable critical mass. The District Hall in Boston closed down over a year ago, so I'm not too hopeful, but at least there are other good free workspaces available in Providence.
