25 Best Things to Do in Bermuda | Condé Nast Traveler

"Bermuda is known as the shipwreck capital of the Atlantic, and for good reason. Some estimates put the number of wrecks along the reef surrounding the island at around 300; new ships are continually being discovered—and are continually being scuttled, expanding the underwater geography off the island’s coast. To navigate the vast scope of shipwrecks in Bermuda, there’s no better outfit than Blue Water Divers, the longest-running PADI dive center on the island. BWD, under the guidance of divemaster Chris Gauntlett, offers two-tank morning dives year-round and one-tank afternoon dives when there’s demand for it, at some of Bermuda's best dive sites . Each dive begins with a traditional dive briefing—what to expect, what to look out for, depths, and dive times—and, if you’re lucky, ends with some homemade cake served (elegantly) out of a plastic tupperware container (in non-pandemic times, anyway)." - Katherine Cusumano

Blue Water Divers — Tour Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"So, can you give us some background on this activity? Bermuda is known as the shipwreck capital of the Atlantic, and for good reason. One of the few shops open year-round—water temperatures and tourist traffic drop in winter—BWD, under the guidance of divemaster Chris Gauntlett, offers two-tank morning dives year-round and one-tank afternoon dives when there’s demand for it. Due to its location on the west end of the island, its dive boat can easily access a pretty wide variety of wreck and non-wreck sites . BWD also offers snorkeling—or, for the non-mariner in your travel party, simply a seat on the dive boat. So what's the dive crowd like? Though BWD gets its fair share of tourists, it’s also a regular destination for a crew of experienced locals; the dive shop offers a seasonal membership to their club, which comes with unlimited dives during the calendar year. Tell us a little about the guides. Chris, who acquired BWD from its previous owner in 2012, has been diving (and working at dive shops) since 1990; he’s also the chairman of the Bermuda Wreck Authority. So you’re in good hands aboard the Modern Sinbad. Each dive begins with a traditional dive briefing—what to expect, what to look out for, depths, and dive times—and, if you’re lucky, ends with some homemade cake served (elegantly) out of a plastic tupperware container (in non-pandemic times, anyway). What are some of the most memorable sights from the dives (or snorkels)? The squad of 18th-century wrecks, including the triumvirate of the Lartington, the Montana, and the Constellation, all carry with them the allure of a good backstory. It’s been suspected, for example, that the Marie Celeste, which sank in 1864, may have been sabotaged. BWD also has a few go-to non-wreck sites, like the areas they’ve nicknamed “Peter Pan”—other boats “never, never” go there—and its accompanying “Wendy.” Got it. So when you get down to it, why would you recommend a dive with Blue Water Divers? There’s no way around it: For first-timers, scuba diving is daunting. But the combination of stunning underwater vistas and the experienced team at BWD helps alleviate some of the stress. If you’re taken with it, the shop also offers PADI certification courses." - Katherine Cusumano

I have been diving with Dive Bermuda in Somerset and it was easily one of the best dive experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcomed and completely at ease. We were newer to ocean diving and had a little anxiety going in… but their calm, friendly, and professional approach helped us feel ready right away. They explained everything clearly, checked all our equipment carefully, and made sure we understood what to expect before we even got on the boat. One of the best parts was the refresher they offered before the actual dive. If you haven’t dived in a while… definitely take advantage of it. It gave us time to get used to the gear again, practice key skills, and get our confidence back without feeling rushed. The instructors were patient and encouraging the whole time. They also offer a Discover Scuba class for anyone who has never dived before… and it’s an incredible way to try diving for the first time. If you’re thinking about trying it… you absolutely should. It’s a safe, exciting introduction that makes diving feel accessible and fun. Once we got into the water, the experience only got better. The dive site was beautiful—vibrant reefs, colorful fish, and great visibility. The crew stayed close by but also gave us space to explore and enjoy it at our own pace. A couple of people in our group had minor gear issues… a mask not sealing right and a buoyancy problem… and the staff solved everything quickly and smoothly without turning it into a big deal. It showed how experienced and capable they were… always watching, always ready to help, but never making anyone feel uncomfortable. The attitude of the entire Dive Bermuda team was just amazing. Everyone on the boat had such positive energy… they were upbeat, kind, and genuinely excited to share the experience with us. You could tell they loved what they were doing. We trusted them almost immediately, and that trust stayed with us the whole time. It made a huge difference in how relaxed and enjoyable the dive felt. I would dive with them again in a heartbeat. Whether you’re brand new to diving or just a little rusty, they’ve got you covered. They’re the kind of team that makes the whole thing feel easy, exciting, and totally worth it. If you’re in Bermuda and thinking about diving… go with Dive Bermuda in Somerset. You won’t regret it.

We dove with Cam and Brittany and a slew of others while our cruise ship was in port at the beginning of October. My wife and I are later-in-life divers and sometimes experience diver impostor syndrome. We were warmly welcomed and felt immediately at ease. The check-in process is quick. They took the equipment we brought and loaded and prepped it on the boat. We were able to get two dives in at Hammerhead and Mary Celestia. Both were great and different from each other. We were between two tropical storms, and this was the only dive day scheduled that week—some high waves in the middle and at the end, which Cam navigated with such impressive skills. The on-board orientation and safety checks were smooth and stress-reducing. We dove with Brittany, who is such a phenomenal dive master. She has such a calming approach and met us where we were as divers. Brittany was encouraging and made some observations/adjustments that made our second dive the best dive we ever had together. We can't thank Dive Bermuda - Somerset enough for treating us so well and taking the time to improve our skills and enjoyment. Would 100% recommend Dive Bermuda - Somerset to anyone interested in diving in Bermuda. I know we will be back.

I came in June for my first fun dive since my certification. The instructors were very friendly and created a lovely relaxed environment. They also were very attentive and sorted everything for us so that we literally just put the gear on and jumped in. Tristen in particular was extremely kind and a great instructor. The ship wrecks and coral arches were lot of fun to go through. Overall a great experience!

I can’t give this place a better review, Cam and Brittany were incredible! We have dove all over the world and I believe these are the BEST we have ever encountered! The dive was exceptional, but the instructors were over the top amazing! If there were 10 stars they deserve 12! The captain Roni was the topping of a perfect day! He made it so special sharing his several generation experience at this amazing island! We feel blessed to have found this dive shop

Very friendly and professional staff. Great experience overall. A bit pricey, as is standard in Bermuda, but will definitely go again next trip to the island. Highly recommend!
