I went to the hostel only to buy a youth hostel membership and I was treated like a little idiot. I had called the previous evening and that morning to ask if I could buy a membership at the hostel in Ortenberg with a credit card. Both times I was told that it would not be an issue. After I had traveled for a couple of hours by bus and train and then climbed a long, steep hill, I waited for 10 minutes while Fabio checked in a family for the night. When I presented my German national identity card for identification, Fabio successfully entered the information into the computer and then proceeded to tell me he could not issue me a membership card although I had given him my credit card as well. Although he told me he was going to talk to his manager in the back room (and to keep me waiting even longer), the supposed conversation yielded no Positive results. Moreover, I found Fabio's manner very eerie and creepy. I left feeling upset, powerless and frustrated.

Great experience to sleep in a castle, unfortunately the rooms are all hostel-style renovated and also don't get to sleep in 1 bed as a couple but the service is great and you get to have breakfast in the old castle style dining room <3 A but expensive to stay as 2 adults (93€) but... The castle is a hike up but it sits in the middle of the vines. Great view to the valley.

I was here for 4 days to attend a seminar. From the bus station to the Schloss took ca. 15 minutes walking, but the route is quiet confusing and needed the extra energy because the Schloss is up on the hill. But you know the phrase well: "When everything feels like an uphill struggle, think about the view from the top." And it was enchanting. The hills and houses view from afar are so pretty, I could not help myself to take lots of picture. It was a surprising fact to me, too, that what used to be a castle turned out to be youth hostel. It was my first time sleeping in a 'castle' and I can still the castle through the architecture and the decoration. Unfortunately, the bed is too small and it made my body ached. The heater didn't work well and I was there on March when it was quiet windy and cold, the bathroom is also too small. The breakfast was good, but not that best. There's also a menu for a vegetarian. There is a piano where you can play, a vending machine for sweets and drinks, it's nice. The building is quiet confusing at first as it has many corridors, but I found it fascinating. They also have field for us to play volley ball, basketball, tennis table, and there's also an underground "Spielzimmer". It's a great hostel for "kinder" or kids, but when you are 20 or you are tall enough, you need to accept the pain your body feel when you sleep here. Overall, I am having a good time in this castle. :)

We had a very pleasant stay at DJH Ortenberg. The hostel is beautifully located at a castle that has over 1000 years of history. It is surrounded by vineyards and close to major attractions such as Europapark. The staff was very helpful and friendly. This is a very family-friendly hostel, and there were lots of children. The rooms were very clean and warm. The breakfast room is a highlight, beautifully decorated with enourmous puzzles of famous paintings. The room itself is a gem, with carved wood decorations and paintings on the ceilings. Usually one pays for a guided tour of such a castle, so having a meal there is something special. We felt the breakfast was very good, on Sunday there were even special types of bread and boiled eggs. We would love to come back!

Castle is beautiful. Like if you are in the medieval centuries. Can be seen from far away because it is built on a hill. Next to it is a tower and from the top of it the view is spectacular. Loved the visit - would visit again. Hard to find parking place.

Very cozy place to stay in. Decent rooms and cleanliness is good too. The beds are clean and fresh bedsheets are provided on arrival. Towels can be availed by reception at 2 euro per one fresh towel. The pricing is reasonable. The food is average. I would prefer food with better options but for the price, it's reasonable. the only downside is that the place is little isolated. Everything else is great.😊

I was part of a group that hired the whole youth hostel for a long weekend. It was great value for money, comfortable (for a Youth Hostel) with good food. However, what marks this out as special is the location. The castle is well preserved and, although is mostly open to the public, is not too busy. The highlight of the grounds is the tower that you can climb up one several different levels with an awesome view. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone.
