Why a Running Retreat Is the Perfect Way to See Ireland

"A relatively accessible peak in the Wicklow range that still demands respect—rising to about 2,400 feet with a steep, rock-strewn approach—offering runners sweeping descent routes lined with prickly gorse and rewarding views down toward a dark, pintlike lake; it serves as a good test of stamina while allowing group-paced running and moments of shared triumph at the summit." - Alexandra Kleeman

Great walk, although make sure you're prepared if the weather is not good (see photos). I walked from J B Malone car park and was a total of 1100 feet ascent and 2 hours at a moderate pace. If you start from the same place as me you will need to divert off the board walk just before the summit, make sure you have a map

Beautiful views, good hiking paths but note it can be very windy on the way to the top.

An amazing hike in the Wicklow Mountains area! It is very windy and cloudy at the top, but offers some of the best views! The entire trail is paved with logs and easy to walk with some decent hiking boots. Go up to the parking lot with the coffee shop and walk up using Google Maps. The hike takes roughly 3.5 hours from start to summit to the start again. On a side note, I have immense respect for the Irish mountain climbers who laid this path for the rest of us.

Easy hike, took 1 and a half hour to the top. Was able to see bray from the top. The view was good, but was too windy and couldn't spend much time. Got back to the car park in an hour. Took over all 2 and a half hour to complete the hike.

Lovely hike whish is 2.5 to 3hrs but very accessible for all levels. Nicely maintained trails with a lot of stone added in the last while. Easy to take on in a pair of runner There is ample parking and even a coffee van at the start of the trail (aroma coffee). No better way to start a hike than a fresh coffee. Unsure of the vans opening hrs but seems to be around every weekend Some of the best view from any hilltop in Wicklow with many lakes and hilltops in the distance as well as views of Dublin bay. Even on a nice day the walk can be quite windy as their is little shelter near the top. Suggest having an extra layer the bag.

A beautiful climb, fantastic views, but going with little girls (6 years old) it was a bit long for us. Especially because despite being summer the wind blows constantly, if you're not used to it, it's also tiring. For adults or older children, highly recommended. We parked in the JB Malone car park and walked up from there. We did it in July, and if you like blueberries it is a very good time of year, you can enjoy them during a good part of the trail.

Great views and fairly straightforward path to the top, as with any mountain the temperatures can drop dramatically 😂😂 seen people up there today in shorts and runners and they looked cold and miserable 😂😂 it’s the mountains, always dress for the cold and rain. 10 degrees in Dublin , 5 degrees on top of mountain and felt like -1 . Well worth the hike, just bring the right gear 👍

Yelp
Djouce wood is an extensive area of forest managed by Coillte and bordered to the south west by Djouce mountain close to Dublin in the Wicklow mountains. The wood is a mix of forest roads, trails and paths laid out and useable by walkers and mountain bikers alike. The area was once part of the Powerscourt Estate. The trails in the forest offer excellent views over the River Dargle valley to the Powersourt Waterfall which is the highest waterfall in Ireland and to Djouce Mountain (725m). The area has many other great walking trails including accessing the mountain area of Djouce, War Hill, White Hill and Maulin. It also gives access to the Wicklow way heading north through Crone and Lackan or south to Ballinastoe. There are two specific trails in Djouce wood, the red (Deerpark) and the blue trail. The red trail is approximately 3 hours long and deemed a moderate level walk. It's along mostly forest paths and a few forest roads. It can be quite wet, muddy, and open to the elements so this trail is best approached with appropriate wet gear and walking shoes or boots. The blue trail at one and a half hours is an easier route on drier woodland trails which wouldn't require the same level of dressing for the weather and environment. The carpark is well maintained and at the moment is open until 4pm in the afternoon. Coillte's website www.coillteoutdoors.ie provides driving directions and maps of the trails available in this wood.
