On the Grid : Östermalm

"During the 18th Century this area was called “The barn courtyard” and it was here the king grazed his cattle. Much has happened since then. Today Östermalm is the Upper East Side of Stockholm, where the rich and famous live. And it’s easy to tell by the area’s luxury shopping and dining. But it’s not all expensive – Östermalm is where you’ll find the best mid-range Swedish fashion brands and the beautiful national park Djurgården. It’s probably also where you’ll find yourself at 5am after a fun night out, since Stureplan is a hub for nightlife. So meet up with a friend at “Svampen” (the Mushroom) like a true Stockholmer and let the day begin!" - Hyperakt

The Swedish Birthday Party

"I spent the evening on Djurgården, one of Stockholm’s largest islands, which houses attractions like Gröna Lund, the Vasa Museum, the ABBA Museum, and Skansen (an open-air museum of pre-industrial Swedish life); more than its museums, the island is famed for its running trails and gardens. Wandering its tiny stone paths and gardens made the city feel distant and provided the perfect, leafy setting for Rosendals Trädgård and the long, convivial summer-night celebration." - Matthew Kepnes

How to Visit Stockholm on a Budget in 2025

"I love the parks in Stockholm, and Djurgarden is one of my favorites: it has huge open spaces and is great for outdoor activities, lounging, picnics, and enjoying long summer days." - Matthew Kepnes

Yelp
We ordered lunch from an open air sandwich shop. The grilled cheese was good - aggressively and exuberantly cheesy with a side of chips. Some pickles would be nice but alas. Cost was high but the convenience while we hit some of the close by museums was nice.

Yelp
A must-visit for anyone traveling to Stockholm. This island is absolutely beautiful and open to the public for free! The park is extremely lush, green, and expansive with many experiences to choose from, whether you are looking to take a long stroll, stretch out on a blanket, eat a good meal with a scenic view, or learn about Swedish history at Skansen. I highly recommend having coffee or lunch at Rosendals Trädgård - a locally operated farm and dining destination centrally located in the park. There is even an option to take your meal and enjoy it in the beautiful apple orchard.

Yelp
Pretty amazing park, taking up an entire island and offering a ton of variety: great museums, Skansen (with its unique mix of cultural heritage and zoo), and a huge forested area you can run/walk/ride for several miles. All easy to get to from the city center via a long walk or short transit/ferry ride.

Yelp
A district of Stockholm full of gardens and museums. In the end of July I spent an entire day here wandering around. Djurgården was once the Royal Game Park and is an island in central Stockholm. It is home to several historical buildings, monuments, and museums.- like the Vasa and ABBA museums. The Gröna Lund is an amusement park there. The open-air museum Skansen shows different eras of Swedish life, it is one of the Stockholmers' favorite recreation areas and tourist destinations. The island belongs to the National City park founded in 1995. Since the 15th century the Swedish monarch has owned or held the right of disposition of Royal Djurgården. I recommend renting a bicycle and checking out the museums, parks and harbor areas. Just beautiful.

Yelp
I question why do I the things I do? I'm particularly thinking about M. Career. What are the reasons and purpose? My answer...happiness to freedom. Water flowing and green scenery to take in. Pleasant stroll and I found my balance. Stockholm's blue water is the truest of its nature. No wonder the anchor is their symbol. It's fabulous to dock along these shores at any given day and simply be. Pace yourself is what I discovered to do. Remember to breathe it all in. Never stop traveling...it does the body, mind and soul wonders!

Yelp
Perfect spot for a long walk in Stockholm's finest city greenery. Museums, cafes, art installations, boats, canoes. Water everywhere! Locals and tourists of all ages love coming here.

Yelp
Djurgården is also one of my favorites, this place is unlike Gamla stan. It is full of green and wide streets. To get to this place, my hubby and I first actually took the ferries, which I total recommend it. we can we the normal boat, which out day tickets got that cover. It went from Gamla stan to Djurgården In just about 10-15 minutes. But those couple minutes allowed us to see the city from the water. Plus the weather was really great when we were there. It just simply became one of the highlights of our trip. First thing before stepped my foot on the island I saw the Gröna Lund, which an amusement park. That it looked like it was just on the water, pretty cool and amazing. It kind of remind me some concept of lost paradise once I saw somewhere. Besides than that, the museum itself also got several cool places to be. We were on our way to the Spiritmuseum, along the way, we passed this beautiful yard club area, it was just brilliant to be there. Spiritmuseum is amazing as well, I had cool time there. there are couple other museums, such us ABBA museum, Nordisches Museum and Vasa museum on the island, we couldn't make it the first time here, so we came back again with tram and visited the Vasa museum as well, it was just amazing to be able to see the warship Vasa. There is a nice park to walk with on the island as well. It just made me like this place even more.

Yelp
Djurgarden is a lovely place to walk - except in the dead of winter. But even then the snow is removed nicely from the main paths. In the spring and summer this place is a paradise. No where on earth is there better weather than in Sweden in the Summer. I like to walk the entire island with Djurgarden being only one of the places I go there. There are architectural wonders here - as well as museums galleries - a children's museum devoted to Pippi Longstocking - and even an amusement park. Great Place to spend the day!

Yelp
Absolutely loved biking through Djurgarden! Fantastic scenery and very chill / relaxing! It's not crowded either unlike a lot of public parks in the U.S. (for example, Central Park in New York is awesome but it's always relatively chaotic with how many people there are). Loved the mix of streams, the sea, lush forests, gardens, and historical monuments and museums! I especially liked the Rosendal with all the different wildlife and flora. Definitely a must if you're visiting Stockholm!

Yelp
I walked along the water a bit here, but I definitely need to come back. I had originally landed to rent a bike to bike through this, but I ran out of time. Finitely need to do it next time! It's really pretty and the view is quite good. There aren't too many people around so it's quite peaceful. Good to take a stroll through! It's a bit far from the city center, but take tram 7 (public transportation). It will take you right to the garden.

Yelp
My favourite part of Stockholm. We were staying at Story Hotel in Ostermalm. Djurgarden was a brisk 15 minute walk away. The whole island is a National Park. There are museums, monuments, historical buildings, lakes, art installations and an old Coney Island - like fun fair called Gröna Lund. But the real treat is just to walk and walk and walk. You feel like you are in the deepest country side. Beautiful.

Yelp
A cool little island worth visiting. It has a couple museums but I wasn't really interested in any of them. Instead, I just walked around and then sat in the park and chilled a bit. You get a nice and different view of the city from here and the ferry ride is quick and easy and beautiful! Why not check it out?

Yelp
Quite easily one of the best parks in any city anywhere in the world - there are not to many parks you can pick wild berries raspberries and strawberries and Apples. Miles of water from parks to roam with great casual dining - summer autum winter spring this park has something for everyone. The properties within the park are mind blowing and walk - run - swim your way around or just lay in the sun and picnic with the family-

Yelp
My husband & I had a lovely time exploring this beautiful island covered in snow! We went to the Vasa museum and had fika at Rosendals Trädgård!

Yelp
A nice park with two sides, one for cycling and walking and the other just for walking. There are docks scattered around where you can lounge under the sun and take a dip in the cool lake. Definitely love jogging here! Be careful in the summer since Canada geese flock to this part of town so watch where you lay your picnic mat. No food for picnic? There are several restaurants in Djurgården you could hang out at. A perfect place to spend a warm, lazy summer day.
