"In 1998, folk artist Stephen Huneck died and came back to life five minutes later. Stephen had been battling Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome and, upon recovery, stated that “the near-death experience, combined with what my wife taught me about love, and the appreciation I felt toward the most basic things we take for granted all had a profound effect on me. As an artist, I share the feelings I have with others through my art.” Not long after Huneck returned home to his wife and three dogs, he had the idea of wanting to “build a chapel, one that celebrated the spiritual bond we have with our dogs, and that would be open to dogs and people. People of any faith or belief system.” Huneck built the chapel on “Dog Mountain,” located on his mountaintop farm in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Huneck styled it in the manner of “a small village church built in Vermont in 1820, quite fitting with its setting of rolling mountains and pasture,” according to his personal website. “The white steeple points up to the heavens, and on the top is a Lab with wings that turns in the wind and proclaims this place has a special affinity with dogs.” As you walk into the chapel, you are bathed in the light of the stained glass windows, with images of dogs pieced into them, and surrounded by dog carvings. The interior walls are covered in handwritten notes and photographs of dogs and other animals that have passed on, and the tables offer treats for canine visitors. Scattered around Dog Mountain are various dog sculptures such as a row of canine heads mounted on pillars and a small man in a business suit walking his dog. A sign outside of the chapel reads: “Welcome all creeds, all breeds. No dogmas allowed.” In January of 2010, the Dog Chapel and Huneck’s other galleries were hit hard by the economic downturn and Huneck was forced to lay off most of his employees. He passed away a week later. His wife Gwen continued to run the chapel, until she herself passed in the summer of 2013. However, the staff continues to maintain the vision of the founders and Dog Mountain remains free and open to the public." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Enjoyable afternoon stop while traveling in Vermont. If you have a Labrador Retriever it’s a must see. The Chapel is a beautiful site. The walls are covered with pictures and notes dedicated to everyone’s special dog. The stained glass panels are gorgeous. And the dog sculptures are whimsical. The gallery and gift shop has lots of fun things featuring mostly labs. Bright and colorful creatures are everywhere. Had a good time wandering around.

This place was pretty great- the idea behind it and also the property itself. They do ask for a donation of $6 for a day pass, but it's totally worth it. They have a little store where you can see art, and also purchase items. If you bring your dogs in, they need to be leashed in the store. The chapel is amazing and so pretty and well thought out. Be sure to take a picture of your fur baby that has passed- you can place them on the wall or in the book. Be sure to use tape (they have there) and not use/bring thumb tacks. Also, don't place any pictuures on the glass, wod, or art (some people felt they were above these requests and brought thumb tacks and placed on the wood, etc. Be respectful! There are a number of trails you can walk and also a field with a pond where you can let your dog play. We happened to go and there was a guy playing bag pipes, which was awesome. This is a really great space, please have fun, but be respectful.

My dogs had a BLAST!!! They loved all the freedom to run, the Dog Pond was a huge hit. We went when it was raining, that didn't slow down my three. The chapel is a beautiful tribute to beloved pets. The gift shop and gallery were amazing. All the grounds were clean and had dog decor all over. My personal favorite feature was the bathroom. It was huge, you would easily bring your dog there without space being compromised. The dog faucet was a fun feature. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting a fun place to take your dog.

Came all the way from Oklahoma to stop by and visit The Dog Chapel. This place is a wonderful, emotional, and fulfilling experience. Loved it here. 10/10, would visit every time I'm in Vermont.

Google
Incredible chapel dedicated to our pets in heaven. Beautiful artwork, stained glass windows, and folk-art carvings. Trails to hike with your dogs. Pet friendly, leash-free for dogs.

Google
Amazing! 150 acres of off leash fun for dogs and people. Trails, ponds and open fields abound and are ready for discovery. Gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains and so peaceful. They have a huge gift shop with everything dog related and, if you're lucky, a furry friend might personally greet you at the door. The chapel will tug at your heart strings and bring tears to your eyes when you see all the photos and notes to those who crushed The Rainbow Bridge. You can also leave a little note for your beloved fur baby if you wish.

I found this beautiful place through tiktok. I travelled from Texas to memorialize my Roxy who passed May 2024. This place was like heaven on earth. Please donate to let this art installation continue for generations to come. Dog friendly please be mindful of cleaning after them and being on leash in designated areas. Thank you for sharing this gift to the world.

So beautiful & peaceful; no place in N.E. honors & pays homage to dogs of all sizes and breeds than Dog Mountain. We drove 4 hours to memorialize our 12yo WFT who passed in July and our 3 yo Sheepadoodle who passed last week. It was a spiritual experience I will always cherish since our 3 yo was diagnosed with terminal cancer in October and we were able to bring her while she was alive. It was the first time she walked off leash since we don’t typically bring any of our dogs to dog parks. If you haven’t been, you must. Bene: 3/19/12-7/22/24 🕊️🐾🕉️ Gigi: 3/16/21- 11/7/24 🕊️🐾🕉️

Yelp
A nice little shop with a touch of whimsy featuring artwork, crafts, clothing, etc from local artists, you'll definitely find something - even for cat lovers too. A beautiful view of the grounds as well. Check out the bathroom even if you don't need to use it!

David L.

Yelp
Highly recommended for any dog lover. This was a great place for my wife and I to have a small memorial service/remembrance for our recently deceased dog, Belle. The Dog Chapel provided just the right ambience and it was great that we were able to leave a photo of our dog along with a short message there. We also really enjoyed seeing the photos and messages that others had left too. The grounds itself are also nice to walk around and has scenic views. While the place is free to visit, please remember that they do take donations in case you feel moved to do so.

Yelp
This is one of the most thoughtful and sentimental things I've ever seen . It is a place the hat makes you feel sad and yet extremely at peace all at the same time , if you are an animal lover whom have lost your best friend , you will definitely appreciate the whole idea of this please . The staff is so amazing and donations are welcomed in order to keep so many memories alive . If you have loved an animal unconditionally you have to visit this place .

Jason P.

Yelp
I loved this location. If you read the messages, it'll just break your heart. There are lots of individuals who come to this location to post messages to their deceased loved dogs. The idea behind the location is wonderful, and free to all.

Yelp
ONE OF THE BEST DOG CHAPELS EVER in the world - you should come here and leave smiling and crying happy tears. I think the closest thing to Heaven - what a beautiful soulful place. Where else can you hike a mountain, appreciate your lost family members and look at a beautiful art gallery and shop with your dog? Dogs are able to run free without leashes and live their best lives here. Everyone is so kind and sweet. Again Heaven on Earth and the hike hello trail was lovely. I could spend an hour reading stories of our dogs in the Rainbow Bridge. The most peaceful place on Earth and you will not regret staying a few hours here. They have PUPPY PARTIES AND DOG DAYS and concerts here. Best place ever!

Elona H.

Yelp
This place is beautiful. The gallery is inviting. Dogs abound! We walked a trail, visited with Thelma, spent time reading tributes in the chapel and bought some stickers, postcards, t-shirts and prints. Next time we will be bringing our dog with us!

Courtney N.

Yelp
Located at the base of Dog Mountain (recommend you take the trails there too as it's a nice walk), the Dog Chapel was super cool to roam around and explore. It's essentially a gift shop but has a nice display of things created by Stephen Huneck. The woman who greeted us was so friendly and I loved her puppy wandering around. You can bring your dog in but we didn't as she was tired from the hike. They have an assortment of things like posters, key chains, welcome mats - all images created by Huneck. The prices aren't cheap. I didn't buy anything but I really enjoyed browsing. He was such a talented and fun man! You can't help but smile and feel happy looking at his art. Plenty of parking and wasn't crowded when we went on a Saturday afternoon.

Karen Y.

Yelp
This was our one stop in Vermont because there's apparently not much to do with kids in this state. They liked the artwork and the dog chapel but the gift shop/art gallery was lacking a little and we left the place after only 20 minutes. It's better for people to come here with dogs and walk them around the many trails. I wish they sold dog treats, hand-crafted dog bowls, souvenir dog key chains, doggy shaped treats for humans perhaps? Just some ideas. We only bought a few postcards.

Matthew A.

Yelp
RIP Stephen Huneck. We will miss Dog Mountain, the Dog Chapel and all your wonderful dog pieces of art. Thanks for making the world more beautiful and dog friendly.

Yelp
This is one of those places that I would consider "a life-changing" experience. We spent 1.5 days here this past weekend, and my friend and I were touched at our experience. She bought an original triptic "dog walker" piece, and I bought a "bad dog greeting" print. I also bought a print that you can rest on your window sill and the sun coming through it looks so pretty. I'm so happy she told me of Dog Mountain. We spent a lot of time hiking the trails with my dog, and a lot of time in the chapel. We also spent a lot of time in the actual gallery. Basically, this place brought us closer to each other, closer to the tragic sadness of suicide, and the love and the pain of love and loss. We are touched, and we are so unbelievably grateful to those who are trying to keep this place up and running, so we were able to experience it for ourselves.

Ashley B.

Yelp
This place is just awesome. It's simple, if you have a dog, you must go here. Everything about this place is perfect. There is plenty of space for your pup to run and play. There are excellent views and little walks to go on and there is even a small pond for the dogs. The gallery is really special and perfect for dog lovers. There is a spot for donations toward the upkeep of the grounds. The chapel is such a sweet place, but I tend to avoid it. I hate to think about the mortality of my pets. It's just a great place to spend an afternoon with your best friend(s). Don't forget to bring your own water and bags for cleanup.

Tracey M.

Yelp
I was looking for an image of Bad Dog and was so sad to see that Stephen and Gwen passed. I worked in the Windsor gallery back in '95. Best job, best people. My favorite work was always the nun CD cabinet with a glowing cobalt face. It's been a few years since someone submitted a review, but the Huneck St. Johnsbury studio is magical.

Richard D.

Yelp
I write this review today almost a week since visiting Dog Mountain over Memorial Day weekend. I read on their facebook page that Stephen's wife, Gwen, has passed away as well. This place was the highlight of our doggie trip. If there was a dog heaven, I would picture it to be a place like this. Dogs are welcome to run and roam free, roll in the grass, or jump in the pond. There's plenty of his artwork for sale in the gallery, and the dog chapel was covered with notes from visitors all over the world. I wish there were more places like this where we can bring our furry pals. I hope the remaining folks can keep this going because I would love to come back and visit again one day.

Lili K.

Yelp
What an AMAZING dog mountain!! There's so much grass and a lake for dogs to run around and party it up. What I really liked was how they were allowed indoors, too! It was great to have our pup run around in the store, and check out the bathroom with us (with the cute dog sink, too!). Oh, and there's free wifi which is nice, too. I also liked the dog chapel, which was a dedication to all the dogs who have passed away. I got a postcard...his artwork is cute!

Yelp
I have never been to any dog place so special! I live in Californa and visit Vermont once a year. On Oct.7th 2012 was my first time there and I love it. I am a dog fanatic, and this place is for the dog lover. A secluded haven for friends that share a common bond. As I walked on this little piece of heaven, I met people who adored their furry family members. They shared stories of their dogs long gone and the ones that are still here. On that day, my husband and I did a mini hike with our yorkies. They loved the hike and we loved the site. At the end, I went in the chapel and paid tribute to my yorkie Enzo that died way to young. It was bitter sweet. I posted a note for him that said "Mommy and daddy will always lovee you". I shed a few tears and went away thankful this place is here. I made a small donation and prayed that dog chapel will be here next year (I understand that the owner is having some tax troubles). It's truly a lovly place to visit. All in one visit I got to see my yorkies romp around the site and have fun, meet people that love and loved their dogs, and mourn for my Enzo. Thanks Dog Mountain.

Sara K.

Yelp
What a beautiful, peaceful place. Our 17-yr-old dog passed away in February and we have been searching for a way to honor her memory. I came across Dog Chapel online and we immediately began planning a trip. Few things are worth a four hour drive, but this most certianly was. We posted our dog's picture on the wall (the walls were absolutely covered with pictures and notes - what an amazing feeling being in there was) while our younger one sniffed every inch of the chapel. It is a beautiful place, I highly recommend visiting

Linda C.

Yelp
If you are dog people, this is definitely worth a visit. Tucked away outside of St. Johnsbury, the gallery is also referred to as Dog Mountain. The site includes the gallery (collection of items with Stephen Huneck's art as prints and on assorted merchandise) as well as Dog Chapel. They also have various events throughout the year. The Dog Chapel is an amazing place for anyone who has loved a dog as family. There are various pieces of art (carvings, statues, stained glass) and thousands of notes to companion animals who have passed away. Visitors can leave a note of remembrance and tack it to the wall. It is very peaceful, very moving, and an absolutely beautiful spot.

Fabiola L.

Yelp
Amazing!!! We were at Dog Mountain and the Stephen Huneck Gallery this weekend and all I can say is that it was definitely the highlight of our first trip to Vermont. We braved and hour and a half of driving through snow, rain and ice to get here and it was so worth it. The chapel is such a serene and special place. You can literally feel all the energy coming off the walls from the photos and notes left to commemorate pets that have gone on to heaven. We bought a giclee at the gallery as well as some other presents which are all incredibly priced. It's so sad that Stephen Huneck and his wife both passed but they left behind a beautiful place for pet lovers to enjoy. We will definitely be back!!

Marilyn S.

Yelp
If you love dogs and dog lovers gifts this is a must. Paintings, furniture, shirts, mugs and much more. Don't miss this.

Ken M.

Yelp
The Dog Mountain Chapel and Stephen Huneck Gallery is a beautiful place. Just talking the time to read the messages people have left for their beloved pets is very moving. The walls are covered floor to ceiling in messages and photographs. The grounds are well maintained and great for taking a walk with your dog (next time I want to travel their with my dog Sprocket!) The gallery has many reasonably priced pieces of artwork and other dog related items. I would definitely stop by again if I am in the area.

Odin B.

Yelp
We went to the Summer Dog Party which was a whole lot of canine fun with good people, lots of smiles, and pure joy. Dog Chapel is a special place to sit and reflect and be happy among heartwrenching remembrances for dogs gone to heaven and pure joy from all of those wagging tails, and wonderful tribute to the artwork of Stephen Huneck!

Fern S.

Yelp
The Stephen Huneck Gallery and Dog Mountain are well worth a visit. We take our dog, leave tributes to dogs past in the Chapel. Yes, a chapel dedicated to man's best friend filled with Stephen Huneck's heartwarming dog art, and lots of other fun. Everyone should know that this special place is in danger of being closed forever if they don't raise funds to pay the tax man. Go to the website and make some kind of donation to help them out. They have been through so much and they provide a special place for dogs and their people. This gem should be protected forever!!!!

Abbey K.

Yelp
A wonderful place to visit with or without a dog. There are hiking trails, a pond for your dog to swim in, the Dog Chapel & the gallery/gift shop with a lot of different items to purchase.

whichway m.

Yelp
Stephen Huneck has passed away, but Dog Mountain and Dog Chapel are still open as always. His wife Gwen keeps the place going as Stephen would have wanted and Dog Mtn still welcomes dogs and people to visit the grounds, chapel, and art gallery. http://www.dogmt.com/chapel.php

Julie B.

Yelp
This place is sheer magic. If you love dogs, you will love this place. From the chapel to the gallery to the amazing views. Your dog is welcome anywhere you are. The people are wonderful and good on them for doing everything possible to keep this place going after the deaths of both the owners. They are doing an amazing job of not only keeping things going, but making it a wonderful experience for dogs and humans alike!
