Shikoku Island Is Hiding Some of Japan's Best Hot Springs

"One of the oldest and most well-known onsens in the region, dating back more than 1,000 years. The affiliated ryokan boasts a large outdoor bath reserved for its guests, located in the middle of Matsuyama." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We stayed here for two consecutive nights and are truly grateful to the hotel for giving us two distinctly wonderful experiences. This time, we stayed in Room 801. Although it was a bit of a shame that there was no open-air bath (only available on the 7th floor), the thoughtful details in the room made up for it. The complimentary snacks and tea were delightful, and having two refrigerators was incredibly convenient, allowing us to store some late-night snacks. The massage chair was exceptionally comfortable—perfect for a quick nap and ultimate relaxation. The dinners over both nights were exquisitely prepared, each with a unique theme and distinctive flavors. From the selection of ingredients to the cooking methods, we had the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of culinary delights. Combined with two carefully curated breakfasts, the experience felt like a perfect fusion of Shikoku’s local specialties, Japan’s refined shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), and elaborate banquet dishes. Everything, from the colors, aromas, and flavors to the presentation and tableware, was meticulously crafted and truly delightful. We deeply appreciate the attentive explanations from the staff and the incredible craftsmanship of the chefs—every dish was not only delicious but also carried a sense of artistry and warmth. If I were to point out anything that could be improved, there would be two minor things: 1. During breakfast, the sound of dish collection from the neighboring section was quite loud at times, with the clinking of plates and bowls slightly disrupting the dining atmosphere. 2. Occasionally, we noticed the scent of perfume on the staff or perhaps some ambient fragrance in the air. While it wasn’t overwhelming, it did sometimes interfere with fully appreciating the aroma of the food. Other than that, everything was impeccable. One particularly heartwarming and unexpected gesture was when we went to retrieve our car and discovered that the hotel had kindly cleaned it for us. It was such a thoughtful touch that left a lasting impression and made us feel genuinely cared for. Dogo Onsen has long been a favorite retreat for many renowned figures, and after our stay here, we completely understand why—and we’ve fallen in love with it, too. The hotel service was on par with that of many luxury hotels, where staff greet guests warmly and even remember room numbers and individual preferences, as expected. However, what truly touched us was the extra level of personal attention—staff members would offer to take photos, welcome us back with a warm greeting, ask about our day’s adventures, and engage in friendly conversations. These small yet thoughtful gestures made us feel incredibly welcomed, even to the point where we almost felt a bit shy about receiving such attentive service. This stay was not only comfortable and relaxing but also filled with heartfelt hospitality, leaving us with unforgettable memories. If given the opportunity, we would absolutely return to experience this wonderful onsen retreat once again.

We had the most wonderful private dining experience in our room. I’d like to commend our server, Maki, who was a paragon of compassion, kindness, wisdom and professionalism. She made our evening. The food was exceptional, however it was surpassed by Maki’s service.

Everything is just average. I have experienced ryokan a lot before, this hotel-ryokan is quite normal. Honestly the food (gaiseki) was not that great as much as my prior experince at other ryokan. Just enjoy the vibe and onsen.

From the moment you drive to the front door, the service was impeccable. From the front counter service staff to the waitress serving our meals in the room, they really try their very best to answer your every request. We stayed on the 7th floor tatami room with an outdoor onsen bath. The room was incredibly spacious, clean and had little wonderful touches (e.g. scented toilet paper!). The open air onsen bath was large enough to for our family of 4, and very private. Meals were amazing. We had both breakfast and dinner at the hotel. A wonderful 2-day stay.||||The only downside of the hotel was that the road leading up to it had a few seedy establishments.

Wonderful hotel, excellent in every respect. Located very close to the Dogo Onsen, central shopping area, and glass museum, the Dougokan is among a number of beautiful resort hotels that serve primarily a Japanese clientele. The public areas of the hotel are artistically designed, modern, spacious, and tranquil. Our room was very clean and comfortable, and service was outstanding (including setting up futons in our Japanese-style room, holding luggage after we checked out, and ordering a taxi to take us to the station, when several men scrambled to load our luggage into the cab.) My wife used the onsen in the evening, and especially enjoyed the outdoor baths. Very good value for the money. Our rate did not include breakfast, but we had an excellent western-style breakfast in a Dutch-themed cafe in the shopping district. Matsuyama is a beautiful city, well worth spending a night or two. Great place to experience the onsens and see how Japanese families vacation. We thought that the shopping here for Japanese-made linens, tapestries, wooden items, etc. compared favorably with that of bigger cities.

Payed 42,000 yen without Breakfast for a old room. Uncomfortable beds and pillows. Dirty old Bathroom. Service of the staff was really good.

The Dogokan Matsuyama is an upmarket Ryokan. We stayed in a traditional japanese family room, which was spacious and well appointed, with a western style living room and the traditional tatami room. Travelling with a 7 month old the hotel provided a crib/baby seat and a stroller. Our 'housekeeper' was fantastic and couldn't have been more helpful. The traditional dinner and breakfast were delicious.||The hotel is an onsen and our room had a private outdoor bath which justified the room price on its own. the public bath was relaxing and friendly. ||Matsuyama is a charming city with a beautiful castle and the oldest Onsen in Japan. The town is well worth a visit and the Dogokan a great place to stay.

Room is pretty big (although a little aged), and has its own massage chair! Dinner and breakfast both was delicious with fresh ingredients.

Yelp
Traditional Japanese hotel with a tatami room. Big living room, sitting room with window, separate toilet, shower with huge bathtub, sink in between. Pleasant surprise with a MASSAGE CHAIR! Wow; First time ever! It's conveniently located by an Arcade (shops) that are covered which was nice cause it was raining! Kaiseki dinner was beautiful as you can see in my pictures! Another nice surprise is that hotel game famous towels to birthday girls and anniversary couple!
