Driving Thailand's Mae Hong Son Loop on a Motorbike Was One of the Best Things I Did in the Country

"Doi Inthanon National Park is stunning. Hiking trails pass through tropical evergreen, pine, and cloud forests. You’ll see deep canyons, plunging waterfalls, and beautiful bursts of flower blossoms. The summit viewpoint has two spectacular stupas, each surrounded by vibrant gardens. The king and queen chedis were gifts from the Royal Thai Air Force to the late king and queen. They stand at nearly 200 feet tall." - Meagan Drillinger Meagan Drillinger Meagan Drillinger left New York City for a life on the road. 10 Best National Parks in Thailand

"The park spans 186 square miles in the northern province of Chiang Mai, and the best way to explore it is from the city of Chiang Mai. There are many guided group day trips available to book online, or you can hire a private driver familiar with the winding roads. Ensure your itinerary includes all the key attractions, such as the Twin Pagodas (Two Chedis), the Doi Inthanon summit, and the waterfall Wachirathan." - Stacey Wreathall Stacey Wreathall Stacey Wreathall is a freelance writer and Thailand travel expert. Incredible place with a lot of things to do. It has several good hikes and lots of waterfalls. Wachirathan and Mae Ya are the 2 best falls to see, but Mae Ya is probably the better of the 2 because it’s like double the size and much more intricate. Phachor canyon is a nice short hike to add on as well if theres enough time.

Many things to do and see in this national park. Nature trails and some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. The waterfalls alone make the 90 minute journey from Chiang Mai worth it. Mae Ya waterfall is my favourite. The view from the summit and nature trails is also another highlight of the trip.

The drive up is half the fun. You go from warm jungle to misty pine forest in under an hour. It kind of feels like traveling through biomes in a video game — jungle, waterfall, forest, temple, another waterfall, cloud kingdom. At the top there’s a sign that says “Highest Point in Thailand” and everyone’s taking the same photo like they just reached the summit of Olympus. It’s cute. But that’s not why you’re here. It's about the Queen and King Pagodas baby. Very pointy and gorgeous. Add in the gardens and crawling fog, and its a metaphorically and literal cool experience.

1.5 hours of thrill beauty and adventure. Hiking thru dense jungle, rice fields, villages and stunning waterfalls. Keep an eye out for amazing venomous reptiles but the guided will point them out. Must do activity in Chiang Mai

Doi Inthanon National Park, often referred to as "the roof of Thailand", is a breathtaking destination! It's renowned for its lush landscapes, stunning waterfalls, and Thailand's highest peak, Doi Inthanon. Regardless of being rain’ish, we enjoyed our visit, particularly being able to see The Royal Twin Pagodas (Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon and Naphaphone Phumi Siri)!

Amazing National Park Doi Inthanon. The road kept climbing – and so did we. From green rice fields to bamboo huts tucked into the hillsides, the journey up to Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest peak, is full of contrasts. We passed tiny villages, misty forests, and finally reached the royal twin pagodas near the top – standing above the clouds with views that stretch forever. Each stop along the way felt like a different world. ⛰️ Tip: If you’re not in a rush, stay a night in one of the bamboo bungalows near the mid-point. Waking up in the early mountain air is something else. @facebook.com/chiangmaiprivatetourguide #ChiangMaiAdventures #ChiangMaiDriver #ChiangMaiPrivateTour #ChiangMaiPrivateTourguide #chiangmai #ChiangMaiPrivateTourGuideAndDriver #ChiangMaiPrivateTours #ChiangMaiTour #ChiangMaiTourGuide #CustomizedTours #DiscoverThailand #ExploreChiangMai #LocalExpert #LocalDriver #LocalGuide #PersonalizedTour #PrivateTourChiangMai #ThailandAdventures #TravelWithLocals #TravelWithGuide #travel #thailand #travelblogger #amazingthailand #travelguide #traveladventures #ThailandExperience #chiangrai

We spent around 1.5 hours here. Both the king and queen pagoda were lovely and the religious paintings were engraved inside the pagodas. Both pagodas were surrounded by flower gardens. A lot of unique flowers were there. The place looks colourful. One can cover a lot of shots for their instagram. One can love the flowers or statues or paintings and spent a good time over here . This place is a must visit when you are in Chiang mai.

Doi Inthanon is huge so there are many things you could potentially cover, but I hiked the two most popular trails: Kew Mae Pan (mountain) and Pha Dok Siew (plantation). Entry fee to Doi Inthanon is 300 baht for foreigners. At the start of the KMP trail you pay another 200 baht to your guide from the Hmong tribe - this was absolutely my favourite of the two hikes. Spans 6km, stunning panoramic views, and beautiful nature. Avoid going in a group so you can actually hear the birdsong! When you emerge from the KMP trail (where you started), there’s a parking lot across the road with trucks that take you to the King and Queen Pagodas. A return ticket costs 100 baht. Was it worth it? For me, not really, as you can only visit one of the two pagodas and it has beautiful manicured gardens around them - but that’s it (and you can see these pagodas towards the end of the KMP trail). At the start of the approx. 4km PDS trail, you pay another 20 baht as a donation to the Karen tribe, then another 200 baht to your guide. This trek is mostly downhill and along waterfalls (which you cannot swim in) and rice plantations. At the end, you sit in a shack and have a banana and coffee. Overall, a great experience, the temperature was perfect for hiking (16C) and a day to remember!
