19 Places to Find the World's Creepiest Toys

"Sitting behind a pair of innocuous glass doors in Lisbon, Portugal is a miraculous doll repair shop that has managed to remain in the same spot, bringing beloved playthings back to life for almost two centuries.  According to the story on their website, it all started with a woman named Miss Carlota, who would sit on her stoop and craft cloth dolls for the local children. Eventually, the children would bring them their own dolls to be repaired, and Carlota would act like a doll doctor, and patch them up. Eventually her services became so popular that they were able to actually open a doll hospital at 7 Praça Figueira. That was in 1830, and the shop has been going strong for the 180+ years since.  Not only is this one of the oldest doll hospitals in the world, but you quickly realize that this is a home to the hundreds of dolls and the family which created it. Down the decades, any doll that was not claimed was added to their now extensive “museum.” In reality it is a wild and wooly collection of separated doll parts from over a century of styles of dolls. There are racks of heads and arms, cases of eyes, and racks of half-finished “patients.”  For only 3.50 euros you see the many draws of limbs, eyes, beds of ill patients, and rooms full of visitors. From old to new, the extensive collection of dolls will leave you nostalgic and astonished in equal measure." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Extremely unique and worthwhile stop in Lisbon! We were not sure totally what to expect but there is a little shop on the first floor with the museum and doll hospital upstairs. This is a guided tour which I also didn't realize, but our guide (a member of the family who owns it) did a great job. I also appreciated that they had some sense of humor about the way that some aspects of this are sort of silly. They clearly care a lot about doll history but also understand well that a room full of dolls can be a bit funny and/or scary!

Google
Very unique "museum"/ business. Definitely different from all the other tourist sites. The tour lasts about 20 minutes where they explain the different rooms of the "hospital" as well as show off the various dolls they have in possession. On certain days you can visit while the doll doctor is in house "operating" (wasn't during our visit). Definitely would recommend going if you want to experience something off the beaten path.

Google
Great fun for a quick visit. The guide was lovely and knowledgeable. The museum has been in the family for 5 generations we were told. Great value for money and something different to visit as a tourist!

Google
The guide had phenomenal english and was explaining the history about the dolls, and where they were from. It was interesting, different and fun thing to do, for families both also for adults. Entrance was 3.50 for single adult. One thing I will say is that I felt very rushed when I was there, it felt like they just wanted to quickly show the rooms and then usher you out the door.

Really great museum. The lady showed us around the doll hospital and museum. She told us a lot of intresting information about the dolls and their history. I never knew there was so much history and difference between the dolls. Had a great time and definitely recommend!

Google
I got a private tour at the museum, it was very interesting & educating- the history of the dolls, and of the hospital itself. I highly recommend visiting. It is a really lovely place :)

Yelp
Just such a quirky, cool shop. Owner was super nice about me just wandering and checking the place out. Lots of varietys of dolls, and I really like how they give them a second life by repairing them. The centuries of how dolls have evolved and changed was also interesting to see. Yelp 2019
