Walked into Dolly's expecting something good from all the 4-5 star reviews on here. Real experience was totally different. This place obviously benefits from 1) Being a popular place for locals to eat "British" food and 2) Being along a main street on the way to the Chateau, so catching a decent amount of tourists.
Walked in about 8-8:30, didn't have reservations and they were pretty full so were offered to sit outside. Totally fine, no problem as it was rather nice outside with very mild weather.
The problems started with being handed the menu and being told that we could only order from certain pages that were 5+ euros more than some of the prices they had posted outside. Fine, understand that they have a dinner menu but it was quite unclear that it was the lunch menu they had posted by the street. This brought the prices up to a minimum of 15 euros for an entree (20 with dessert). To put that in perspective, many of the restaurants down the street within a 5 minute walk have entrees (and often entire multiple course dinners) well under 15 euros, often in the 11-13 euro range so 15-20 euros here should buy some really good food. Can't comment on their wine or beer list as we had neither but seemed to be in line with the other local establishments. Ended up having a burger that was not great for a LOT of money compared to other places. I actually had a kabab from some side shop off the street that was a third of the price that was better than what I ate there. Service was poor, they obviously know they have a captive audience with any tourists that come into town (not a lot of British English speaking establishments in Caen). The only reason I can think of that locals would come to this place would be if they were tired of the local fare and wanted to spend a lot of money for mediocre food.
Edit: For reference, this review is from when I was in France last year, had forgotten to finish it and just finished it on the day of posting.
