"Shucking Up a Storm at Don's For some of best views (and food) in Hanoi , try the top-floor verandah at this West Lake institution. The climb to the fourth floor can be an effort -- especially during the sweltering summer months -- but it is worth it worth the laid-back ambience up-top. Wash down some of Don's Canadian and French-grown oysters with one of the judiciously selected bottles of wine."

Never had the opportunity to go to don's, today was the day, lets check! So i went to that place, decide to try their famous burger, order the biggest one ( 379k + tax + service , WOW pricey) , patty medium rare ( like it juicy) and add extra bacon and egg, yeah i wanted it full fat. I will start with the pro to be fair, the con will be most of this review. Pro : Buns toasted! Not all shop did it, good point Good and yummy amount of bacon, this is what i called bacon! Massive burger! LARGE french fries homemade ! Service was kind, attentive, even when i complain about this burger and reject it, they did it without any discussion ( and will not be charged) The management offer me a tiramisu as dessert ( free of charge) well done management. And now, reason why i made this burger back to the kitchen, cause this is the FIRST time in hanoi that i clearly reject a dish, many times i dont like much but its ok, taste are different, no major failure, i let it go. i admit i am really picky for food, all i will say is based on my own taste. Firstly, happy to see large french fries, size a bit bigger compare to how i cut it at home, but ok. Major problem, they were undercooked ... The inside was close to raw, so i start to complain nicely, please cook more my french fries. Then the burger itself : At first sight, i was quite surprised about how look like the patty. Look weird, like he had a skin. It doesnt look at all just made on order, and coming from any pan or grill. I was more thinking, made/cook in advance then re heat slowly in oven. Then i open it and try the patty itself. First, this massive burger 200g is not 100% made of beef, as i see onion inside ( well i pay for 200g of meat, not for onion) I ordered my burger medium rare, what i got when i tried was dry, not nice to eat, spice they use make the patty quite sweet. We are Far, very far, very far away from any steak made from fresh raw meat, just take out from grill and served, immediately, still can see juice came out. In this case, nothing, just dry, taste weird and quite sweet., its like a meat cake !! Well i didnt go further more, request the waiter to take it out. Waiter were ok not to charge me for that. I didnt leave ( i should have) , cause i was with a guest, so i order something to eat. Ordered a French truffle pizza hoping it will be good. Well when pizza came it smell french truffle but taste... Taste is exactly taste of the cream cheese my mother buy here in supermarket and put on toast for her breakfast. Quite fat and creamy, not much flavor. Dought ok. Pizza was just mediocre, i even prefer pizza from al fresco. I am quite highly disapointed, Because, this is restaurant fine dining who served an expensive burger ( 379k + tax + service) and at that price i got one of the worst burger i ever eat. The patty was a disaster, certainly made and cook in advance ( i didnt visit kitchen, but it cannot be a patty fresh just grilled or coming from a pan) At this level of price u expect high level of food, what i got is mediocre. Oh, one additional word about something that i really dont like: little technic from restaurant to push for expensive water. It happened to me first time at infamous linguini fine ( worst pizza served to me) , Rico's steakhouse try to push but i reject, today i was in good mood, i didnt see it coming only with bill. As i just arrived in restaurant , waiter ask me if u want water, i said by reflex yes, didnt show me any bottle to approve or any choice, then directly add water in your glass with bottle already opened. As it not the first time and not in same restaurant, i can conclude that is is a lame technique from restaurant to immediately charge u. 50k bottle charged, i dont complain about amount, i dont like being pushed like that, next restaurant who will try this on me, i will leave immediately. So maybe bad luck for me today, but on what has been served to me this experience was a total failure.

Below average food, in quality and taste. Slow service. And dear god this place is overpriced. Was my first time dining here and i had high hopes but the Valentines day menu was SO awful. I felt like i was eating at one those restaurants in Kitchen Nightmare. The experience ruined my valentines night, thanks Don's.

Not a huge restaurant but the 2nd and 3rd levels house attractive decor with a good view over the smaller part of the lake. A superb place for conversation and romantic dining purposes.
