The Best Camping in Georgia, From Stone Mountain to Savannah

"This north Georgia park is home to the meeting place of the Chattahoochee River and Lake Lanier, making it the perfect stop for fans of the water. Boating, fishing, and waterskiing are all permitted here. Plus, Don Carter State Park offers a wide range of camping options across a range of budgets: two bedroom cabins off the lake, RV parking, and primitive sites with tents and hammocks. This park is popular, especially during the summer, so book at least two months in advance."

The handicapped accessible trail was great. I use a walker for mobility , and I didn't have trouble on the trail. There is one really steep area, and not a lot of warning. That was the only troublesome area. But thankfully, my dogs know their commands like "slow", and we could navigate. My dogs loved it. There were also a lot of benches available to sit and rest.

We stayed here in our truck camper for 5 nights. My husband was selected for a 3 day deer hunt at the park. They close the park for 3 days to allow about 40 hunters to help control the deer population. I was not able to stay during the hunt due to safety reasons. On my way home, as I drove out of the park I saw several dead deer on the sides of the roads. It's sad to see and I believe that it is necessary to thin the population so that deer don't get hit by cars and endanger people/families. This is a nice park that is borderd by a section of Lake Lanier. There is a beach, day use area with picnic tables, playgrounds and ample parking. They have about 40 RV campsites and multiple tent camping areas. There are many hiking trails as well as equestrian trails. The RV campground was full but mostly quiet when we were there in November. I'm sure that summer is quite busy and vibrant with families enjoying the lake. The campground bath houses and restrooms are nice and clean. There are 2 host sites in the campground and they do a great job keeping everything maintained. The RV sites are mixed, meaning some are more spread out from others and some are very level while others are not quite level-close, but the area is generally a bit hilly. Water and electric hookups were great with good water pressure and reliable electricity. Most everything in the RV park area is within walking distance except the day use area/beach which could be walked but is a little far especially with kids and probably not recommended. There is no shortage of hiking trails however and a lot of open woods to wander through as well as the shoreline of the lake. Our dog loved it and we will be back! The photos are of my husband's hunting blind, our puppy dog 🐕 and several from the woods including a stack of stones which after careful inspection appeared to be a possible grave in the middle of the woods🤷🏼‍♀️ also some grass spider webs and wild fungus or mushroom🍄?

Great place to spend a day. Nice sandy beach with picnic tables and clean rest rooms, and paddle boats for rent. Boat launch ramps with 6 dock slips for mooring. Fishing platform. Lots of nature trails to explore. All kinds of camping: tent area, RV camper lots, and even cottages. Equestrian trails for your horse. Park borders the Chattahoochee River allowing boating south into Lake Lanier. $5 per day vehicle admission fee.

Cleanest state park I have ever been to. I love the layout and trees between each site. So many trails to choose from. But the campground is my fave. Love that bathhouse is always clean and the laundry area. Only downside is no trash bins for dog bags. They provide the bags but no disposal like other parks. But this is just a minor inconvenience.

We spent a week at DCSP. The camp sites were easy to navigate and very comfortable. Beautiful park with great playgrounds. The little lending library was fun for the grandkids while we stayed there. Great campground hosts, the McDonnells(?) ! Highly recommend this park!

A fabulous place for camping near Atlanta region. The premium sites are clean and have all the facilities. The only issue I see the site area for placing the tent, could have been little more wider. There is a beach nearby, and many other attractions such as boating, trails, deers, kids play area etc. We really enjoyed our stay in the jungle!

Camped here in Mid~August, and campground was peaceful, but the layout is different. I wouldn’t have chosen site #34, for a 40” RV with a Dooley, although the pics and specs online made it seem bigger, and accommodating. The online map and site descriptions don’t explain how the roads and sites are one way, and have NARROW turns. Many sites are direct pull-throughs, and back-ins, and others….not so much. Plus the rock walls, trees, boulders and declines/incline of the road, make it challenging! We arrived mid afternoon, came through the gate, then have to go to the office/gift shop, to check in. Staff was friendly and we received a map, parking pass and a site marker, with directions to our site. The specific destination areas are well marked. If it’s your first visit to the CG, it’s Not easy to find the sites. Thankfully we had another fellow camper that was so helpful, whenever we were trying to figure out where, and how to get into our site. Once we finally got in, we were able to breathe, and enjoy our spot! I read in one of the reviews, that the upper trees needed to be trimmed, or cut back…..This is true. The whole time we were maneuvering into our site, branches were scraping our AC’s & rig🫣and a snap pad was popped off a leveler, thankfully no damages. Also, if you use Starlink, the back rooftop is the best reception placement. Our site does have some shade and afternoon sun is on the business side. There were ants, red and black, at our site, so come prepared. Close to many area attractions, shopping and restaurants. Can also rent kayaks.

Beautiful park with a lake. It has couple of beautiful moderate trails. Many decent spots for taking scenic clicks. Recommended for peaceful gateways, picnics, trails and camping . It has developed campsites with electric and water, nice restrooms with bath options, cottages and some raw campsites as well
