On the Grid : Dong Xuan Center

"A small arch of yellow letters marks the entrance of Don Xuan Center, but you won´t miss the wholesale market by following the only crowd of visitors in this area. Behind a dreary car park are the six halls of the vietnamese market. When you step into one of the halls you are also entering a different world – mountains of synthetic flowers, rows of colorful bags and clothing and towers of plastic toys are located in compartments left and right of the main hall. In the halls of so called „little Vietnam“ glittering nail studios are randomly followed by small restaurants, hairdressers and grocery stores. The best way to explore is to stroll between plastic chic and fascinating smells to find a curiosity to take away." - Schauschau

I ended up going there with a friend, and don't be surprised by the name, but the place has a lot of Indian grocery shops too. I found the price to be quite reasonable and at times cheaper than a lot of German counter parts or Indian stores that sell Indian grocery items. Definately worth visiting if you want to buy Indian rice or atta or other items

Google
Amazing shopping place. I have never seen such a huge and vast shopping place. There are more then 10 big halls encompassing a big variety of shops. All the items of every day use are available in one place. Prices are also reasonable.

It’s like a Vietnamese shopping malls (halls). Be prepared to speak Vietnamese and German there (English is depends). A lots of stuffs - food, all kinds of clothings, household, toys, tools, anything you might need for living here. Prices are reasonable to its quality obviously. Also a lots saloons for haircut and nails polishing/colorings etc. if you go there on purpose and did research in advance, which might be good. There are markets and shopping malls for Vietnamese perfectly. Just be careful to check your receipt before left the shops.

Because of the language, sometimes at some stores it's difficult to figure out if they understand me clearly. Most prominent in hair salons. Referring to both German and English cause some of them won't understand either Otherwise the place is just fine if you know what you're going for. Most of the stuff however, can be found elsewhere for a lower price tag. Open on Sundays which makes it one of the few available options

Dong Xuan Center in Berlin is the largest Asian market in Germany, inspired by Hanoi’s famous night markets, offering authentic Vietnamese cuisine, shops filled with exotic ingredients, textiles, and electronics, and serving as a cultural hub for Berlin’s Vietnamese community

Tina Le

Google
The Dong Xuan Center in Berlin-Lichtenberg is a vibrant Asian market featuring over 400 vendors offering a wide array of products, including groceries, textiles, electronics, and more. Visitors can also enjoy authentic Vietnamese cuisine at several in-house restaurants. However, some reviews mention that the market can be hectic, with prices comparable to other city areas, and bargaining is often necessary. Additionally, there have been concerns about safety incidents within the center, highlighting the importance of staying vigilant and securing personal belongings. Despite these issues, the Dong Xuan Center offers a unique cultural experience for those interested in exploring diverse Asian products and flavors.

The vibe is like in Vietnam. Lots of shops, nails, hair dresser which gave me nostalgia feeling. The smell is a bit annoying tho

Absolutely great authentic Vietnamese food and asian groceries. The stores are soso. We went on a Sunday and it was extremely busy. The cars jamming the whole area were a bit annoying.

Yelp
Wie Urlaub in Asien aber mitten in Berlin. Überall tolles Essen und leckere Getränke, aber eben leider auch ziemliche Schrottprodukte in einigen Läden, die nicht lang halten, dafur aber billig sind.

Yelp
Nowhere else in Germany can you find 3 big market halls where you can buy Asian goods. Indian saris, fresh durian (!), small appliances like rice cookers and of course, every spice, vegetable, seafood you associate with anything Asian. Dong Xuan mostly specializes in Viet items, but make sure to shop around to compare prices. We shopped for ingredients to make Filipino pansit and they have everything here. Don't be shy to ask questions and be LOUD -- just like in Asia.

Yelp
I had the traditional pho at this place, and it came out very fast and had a nice flavor. To my own disappointment, I went a liiiittle overboard with the red chile peppers and the sriracha, so after those flavors soaked in, I had a hard time sipping the fiery broth. But before then, the soup was very good. Not the absolute best pho I've had in my life, but worth a stop! I also had a mangosaft (mango juice), which was just the thing I needed to balance the spice in my mouth. I assume it would be delicious without your mouth on fire, but I'll have to go back to find out.

Yelp
Due to some rough handling by AA baggage tossers, one of our luggage got damaged on our flight into Berlin, lost a wheel and cracked the opposite corner. Launched yelp and this turned up when I searched for "cheap luggage". With this unexpected expense we only allocated around 120 € to spend on a replacement. I was so glad that prices throughout the first 2 warehouses we looked into where bargains. The 28" to 30" hard case luggages were only going for €25 to €50. At those prices, I don't have to worry if it doesn't hold-up any better than the one we replaced. We ended up with a descent looking 28" hard case w/ built-in locks (too bad they're not TSA locks). Priced low enough that my wife bought a nice hand bag, 2 x iPhone and iPad cases using some of the leftover money. The quality and build I think is on par to any China made products currently offered at Amazon or eBay but priced 25% to 50% lower. Having a weaker euro to the dollar certainly helped lower the prices.

Yelp
Sometimes called Berlin's 'Vietnamese mall', the Dong Xuan Center has been visited by practically everyone in Berlin. There are even guide tours! The internet had promised us that this compound of warehouses would fulfill all of our Asian food needs on the cheap. As Seattleites, we are used to a high level of Thai and Vietnamese food and Germany's attempts (although infinitely better than when we arrived in 2007) are generally disappointing. Unfortunately we weren't blow away by the produce on offer or prices, but there were some crazy unusual sights and products. Need a spiked hat? They have it. Beach towel with a tiger? Hell yeah. Want to see a giant carp butchered in front of you? But, of course. A meal of pho after a day of shopping was also only partially satisfying. An over-sized bowl was only 6 euros and had a few tasty add-ins, but even-worse-than-usual service and an odd beef didn't do it for me. Tips for Visiting: Dress warm in winter. Beware the crowds. Know your deals. Buy a statement piece.

Yelp
3 giant halls of cheap goods just like a market in Vietnam. All kinds of kitschy knicknacks. There is a huge shop that sells only plastic flowers. You can't help be ask yourself repeatedly who buys these stuff ? We had Banh Cuon at one of the outdoor stall for snack. It wasn't as good as the ones in Vietnam but at least it is made fresh. Fun place to spend an hour and imagine yourself visiting Vietnam for just a minute.

Yelp
The Asian cultural and commercial center "Dong Xuan Center" is probably the largest Asian supermarket in Berlin. The center consists of three large halls, which are located on a approximately 88,000 square meters large industrial terrain where over 170 dealers offer a variety of Asian products (textiles, footwear, fashion, toys) for sale. The majority of the traders are Vietnamese, but there are also Chinese and Indian. In GDR times the VEB Elektrokohle Lichtenberg (manufacturer of graphite products) was located on the campus. WHERE: The market is located 5 km north-east of Frankfurter Tor in the middle of an old industrial terrain on the north side of the Herzbergstraße in Berlin Lichtenberg. OPENING TIMES: The market is open from Monday - Friday from 9 - 21 clock. PRODUCTS: Asian foods (fresh vegetables and noodles, sauces, spices, Thai basil, shrimp, papaya), textiles, jeans, leather goods, bags, backpacks, luggage, handbags, toys, plastic plants, nylon socks, vietnamese newspapers, magazines, CDs, DVDs and videotapes, flowers, gifts, shoes, cosmetics, household products, driving school, translator, nail salons, barbers FOR WHOM: Vietnam-friends, tourists, families, friends of plastic, artificial flowers lovers, bargain hunters KIDS & FAMILY: A visit to the market with children is not a problem. I have seen there many families with children. But, however, there are only plastic toys to buy. GETTING THERE: There are enough parking for motorists in front of the halls. With public transport you can reach the market best by: TRAM M8 stop Herzbergstr./Industriegebiet Tram 21 stop Herzbergstr./Industriegebiet GASTRONOMY: Many Vietnamese soup kitchens, snack bars and restaurants, in which you can get the original Vietnamese cuisine, such as the delicious "pho" soup (beef soup with rice noodles). POSITIVE: + Asian atmosphere + Very friendly dealers + Spray proof + Budget + Large selection + All ground level NEGATIVE: - Much Plastic - Relatively narrow passageways - The air smells a little plastic and dripping - The quality of the goods usually leaves much to be desired - Only few toilets - No information-counter Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKa9teiQepQ

Yelp
Certainly an interesting place, but each hall basically has the same sorts of things. So after wandering through a few you get the general idea. I guess I"m more curious about how this place is run and the economics of the stalls and different halls than I ever was in buying anything here. But certainly worth checking out if you are looking for some inexpensive cloths or other house hold items. The one grocery I looked through was pretty standard for fired, caned, and frozen items as far as asian markets go. The produce was ok, but as a wet market it wasn't really that good. However, the restaurant in hall 3 was a treat. Some very good Bun Cha is to be had at this place. I'll have to see if I can post a review on that alone as to me it is pretty separate issue regarding the food and the market in general.

Yelp
Big asian market selling wide range of goods, mainly vietnamise shops. Don't expect high end good , be prepared to bargain as majority of goods don't have price tag. Nice restaurants to have authentic vietnamise food.

Yelp
Dear Berlin Tourist Board this should be on your list! There is a very large Vietnamese community and this is where they come to buy and dine. Let's call it shabby chic to be polite but the atmosphere sold it to me. We went to a Vietnamese Restaurant and enjoyed the food plus we bought some food as it is much cheaper than buying it in town. Shame I don't live around the corner I could dispose of my kitchen..

Yelp
Sometimes you need to visit to a place several times before you get a real feel for it. This is one of those places for me. I have been here many times, drawn by my love for unknown (to me anyway) types of food. I would come here and buy a selection of things that I'd never seen before, bring them home and cook something. This place is huge, 7 or so warehouses full of shops, including the food shops (the main reason for my visit), although it is also interesting to see the large East Berlin Vietnamese community going about their business and to try out some Vietnamese home cooking in the restaurants. The surrounding area is unattractive, but interesting to see if you have never been to this part of town and you like urban adventure. You can buy clothes and there are also hardware shops but on the whole the quality is not very good, even tacky. In some of the shops the owners like to follow you around like you are a thief, you may be thinking that perhaps I look like a thief, I assure you neither I or those with me do. If you have a penchant for Viet pop there are also one or two music shops. The food shops vary in price, content and quality so it is a good idea to shop around before settling on something. The shops here are more expensive compared to other Asian shops I use in Berlin and to be honest I have no idea why, since the places I normally go will no-doubt pay higher rents. Go here if you want an adventure, eat some barbecue pork and buy some strange fruit. I have had my fill now and will only go there if I can't get what I want somewhere else.

Yelp
fun, huge market halls with always suprising bargain hunting and strange manicure supply stores, as well as vietnamese restaurants...i love coming here to shop as well as be amused. also a good place to get hard to find asian ingredients!!!
