Travel Guide to Pantelleria, Italy

On the Tiny Island of Pantelleria, Heroic Viticulture Produces Some of the Best Wines in the World — But it Isn't Easy

"Donnafugata Winery, located on the island of Pantelleria, is one of Sicily’s leading wineries. It is renowned for producing the most famous Passito di Pantelleria, Ben Ryé, known for its rich caramel and apricot notes. The winery practices heroic agriculture on the island, which involves cultivating the land in extreme conditions using primarily manual capacity. They produce wines from the Zibibbo grape variety, including Lighea, a dry white wine with orange blossom and bergamot notes; Kabir, a sweet yet fresh Moscato di Pantelleria with passionfruit and orange blossom notes; and Ben Ryé, an intensely rich Passito di Pantelleria with honey notes as it ages. The winery’s practices encourage sustainable practices and protect the island's biodiversity." - Laura Itzkowitz

We had an unforgettable time at the “Ben Ryé sotto le stelle” experience at Donnafugata, hosted by the amazing Nicolò. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, the group was fun, and the wines were outstanding. We especially loved the Ben Ryé and Mille e una Notte. The food pairings were creative and surprisingly good, though it’s not meant to replace a full dinner. Nicolò was incredibly knowledgeable about wine, the winery, the island, and local food culture. A fantastic experience that we highly recommend.

We had a lovely time with our guide Alberto who took the time to explain regional specificities and answer all our questions. Although we would’ve been able to follow in Italian, we highly recommend touring in English as it offered us a rather private tour (just the two of us) compared to the Italian group (16+ people). In fact, we loved our experience so much that we may go back before we leave the island for their 6-wine tasting.

I have been in August for a wine tasting experience. I hope to forget it soon. Let me summarise for you my experience and the, unfortunately, many weak points. The "tasting" lastest about 1h. We had 4 wines (etna white, light red, moscato, passito) and some small snacks: a very expensive aperitivo coming out at 40 euros. After the tasting, we asked to have some more bottles. They refused. It is quite sad to hear this in a winery. The wines were good but not exceptional, in fact many locals tried to dissuade us. Needthless to say, I would not go back.

Overpriced for the quality of wine proposed. However the room overlooking the vineyards is lovely and the personell prepared and professional. I was expecting a better price as wholesale, which is in fact not far from the market price, so we ended up not buying much.
