I visited Doongal Aboriginal Art & Artefacts recently and was very interested in a large Aboriginal artwork. Unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing from the moment I walked in. I smiled at the person behind the counter but wasn’t greeted at all. I continued browsing and ended up falling in love with one of the paintings.
I tried to get the staff member’s attention, but he seemed busy doing nothing behind the counter. When I finally asked a question, it felt as though I was inconveniencing him simply by asking for help. He reluctantly came over so I could show him which piece I meant, but he had no knowledge about the artwork. He went back to the counter “to look something up,” but when two ladies arrived to purchase something, he immediately served them instead.
Serving other customers first is absolutely fine — my question would have taken longer — but even a simple “I’ll be right with you” would have made all the difference.
I left the gallery without purchasing the artwork I was genuinely interested in, simply because the interaction left me feeling unwelcome.
