Evening Dinner – 3/4/2025 and Breakfast 4/4/2025
Atmosphere – very nicely furnished with a mix of bench seats and chairs. Amazing light feature on ceiling. Quiet music played in the background and it was easy to have a conversation.
Service – Very good service once we got going, but we arrive and were seated and told someone would be with us soon to discuss the menus etc, but no one came for 30mins, which was very poor. Eventually I hollered down a waiter from the other side of the room and told him that I’d like him to take our order since we were being ignored by everyone else. He was most apologetic. Also, the Frenchman at the front counter when we arrived wasn’t overly friendly.
Food – All was amazing. We ordered the following:
Oysters – we ordered 4 but they brought out 8 so we had to send 4 back, which was odd. Not sure how they stuffed that up.
Snacks - Fried steam bun, celeriac, truffle Spanner crab, spelt crisp, avocado Kohlrabi dumpling, lovage, macadamia – all of which were delicious!
Entrée - Drunken chicken, water spinach, garlic shoot, prunes, lapsang souchong – this dish was superb. I don’t normally order chicken as it can be bland but this was very well done.
Mains - Grilled lamb backstrap, butternut squash, ‘shepherd pie’, rosemary jus & Roasted duck breast, spiced carrot, fennel, mountain pepper. Both dishes were well portioned and super tasty. The shepherd pie was a very cutes sheep shaped pastry dish which was a real surprise. The duck was very tender too. The meal was served with super tasty bread.
Dessert - Apple terrine, honey, mascarpone, five spice, lemon thyme & Peanut butter wafer, banana, espresso crumb, dark chocolate. Both dishes were divine.
All food was technically perfect. Despite service starting out quite badly, we ended up with a lovely (blonde) female waitress (can’t remember her name) and had a wonderful evening.
The following morning we had breakfast at the restaurant and ordered a new-age “English breakfast” and avocado on toast with tomato and salmon. The meal came with fruit too. All was wonderful and we had coffee and tea on tap. Could not fault the place.
