The Best Hotels in Cape Town for a Truly Local Stay - AFAR

"Tucked at the base of Signal Hill above the colorful houses of Bo-Kaap, this property feels like a tiny village within the city, centered on a main courtyard and café and bordered by a wild garden. Rooms are housed in a series of buildings that climb the hill and open onto rambling garden paths; each room is unique, ranging from cozy chambers to large standalone suites with kitchenettes, some offering dipping pools, terraces, steam rooms, or direct access to a rooftop garden. Instead of a traditional lobby, check-in happens beside a grand dining room and a lounge filled with fringed sofas and wingback chairs, and several rooms provide outstanding views over the City Bowl and Table Mountain." - Mary Holland

Dorp Hotel, Bo Kaap, Cape Town, South Africa - Explore & Book

"Visitors to Dorp, nestling atop Signal Hill in Cape Town, agree on one thing – it is unlike anything they’ve seen. It has the service and grandeur of an upmarket city hotel, but the charm and vibe of a boutique operation. It is chic (designed by the late fashion designer Gail Behr) and offbeat and whimsical, brimming with humour. It isn’t even really a hotel, more a collection of Georgian-inspired buildings of various sizes and styles. Perhaps the word Dorp – Afrikaans for ‘village’ – is the best description. At its heart is the Salon, where guests eat and mingle and which brings to mind a country club with its dusty-pink sofas, Persian rugs, bookshelves and fireplace. The rest is a glorious hodge-podge of influences and details that call to mind a movie set – around every corner there’s an Insta-ready backdrop of glittering pools, mirrored staircases, fairytale gardens, a sweeping roof terrace. The 27 rooms and suites continue the eclectic vibe: you could encounter florals, velvets, chaise longues, rag rugs, clawfoot tubs and artistic wallpaper. And then there are the spectacular natural backdrops with views up to Table Mountain, down to the City Bowl, and across to Table Bay and the craggy Twelve Apostles. Highs The laidback vibe. The hotel even calls itself ‘an unofficial club for oddballs, romantics, seekers of beauty’ It has wide appeal. The main Dorp hotel is great for couples and romantic weekends, while the new block of suites, called OnderDorp, are smaller and self-catering so ideal for families with teens and groups Great location – close enough to the city to get there in minutes but up and away from the bustle with glorious long views Bo Kaap itself: formerly the Malay Quarter, on the slopes of Signal Hill and renowned for its brightly coloured dwellings, it has the largest concentration of historic architecture in South Africa Lows It’s situated in the Muslim community of Bo Kaap, and so doesn’t sell alcohol – although guests are more than welcome to bring their own No kids under 14 Very limited parking There are four communal pools but they're more for dipping than swimming Lots of steps (and quite steep) so not suitable for those with mobility issues" - Handpicked by our hotel experts

If you like quirky, interesting, comfortable, cozy, welcoming, unpretentious unique hotels then this is the place for you!!!||We spent 3 glorious evenings in the moon family suite. Our children joined us from the UK. We live in Australia. None of us are strangers to Cape Town. 30 years ago I went to UCT and my husband went to school there. ||Dorp is possibly one of the loveliest hotels I have ever stayed in. Our room had a wonderful full view of table mountain. There is a lot of attention to detail. There are books and flowers everywhere. At night candles are lit in the dining area and it’s really very lovely.||We ate lunch there on arrival and it was one of the best pieces of kingklip I had whilst in South Africa. I can also recommend the milk tart which my daughter and I naughty shared before dinner one night (I am still hoping they send me the recipe 😉). ||There are so many little extras as well that are worth commenting on. The kitchen was generously stocked with chocolates, rusks, soft drinks, tea and coffee and more. The soap in the bathroom was quite special. The linen was luxurious. All in all I would really recommend this hotel.

The Dorp is an eclectic boutique hotel in a great location in the Bo-Kaap neighborhood. Our experience was outstanding. It’s a beautiful, well maintained property. Our room was in a building that looks old-fashioned but is actually quite new. Views of Table Mountain from our room were exhilarating, especially early in the morning as the sun arises and at night when the mountain is lit up. Don’t miss the views from the rooftop patio! The restaurant is excellent. The dining room is stunning and the quality of food and cooking is superb. Most importantly, the service is exceptional! All of the staff are exceedingly friendly, accommodating and highly competent. They go out of their way to please. For example, we returned one evening from a restaurant and realized my wife had left her phone behind. Ryan, the restaurant manager, insisted on driving to the restaurant to retrieve her phone. Our friends recommended The Dorp Hotel to us and we do so unreservedly to anyone visiting Cape Town.

We all absolutely loved our stay at Dorp. The rooms are stunning and all unique, the views are honestly unbeatable. Not to mention the breakfast and food at the restaurant were all super delicious. The staff were friendly and sweet, we honestly would come back. It didn’t ruin our stay but it’s worth mention that there was just one negative interaction with a waiter called Ryan. He was unnecessarily aggressive and sarcastic. It didn’t ruin our stay but it is a shame because very one else went above and beyond

I will start by saying that if you want to stay at the Dorp Hotel, read the poem on their website. Though I was referred by a friend who knew the owners, it was that poem that hooked me! You will know if this is the place where you want to set your bags down for a few days or a few months. The Dorp is for travelers that love beautiful spaces and places with history. You appreciate all the design details and that they never "match". The Dorp is like a sanctuary of history meets design, exuberantly inviting in the natural setting surrounding it, with a twist of humor. But the highlight is not the space. We only wish we had more time to meet and talk to the local staff who make every second of your visit an experience of homecoming with a brand of warmth that is unrivaled and never over the top, but very real. Thank you for having us. We hope to return.

We spent 3 nights at the Dorp hotel. The hotel was clean, well appointed and quaint. Each room was a little different and ours overlooked Table Mountain. The Dorp is located at the top of a steep road in BoKaap neighborhood. The neighborhood is a 'dry' neighborhood so if you are wanting alcohol, you need to bring your own. We ate all breakfasts there which were a very ample continental breakfast with hot options as well as option to make omelets, etc. We also ate 2 dinners at the Dorp, with good options and good service. The dining space is great to sit and read or enjoy your meal. The service from the staff was very good. Shout out to Lucy at the desk and Ryan and other servers! There is also a gorgeous rooftop which is great for looking out over all of CapeTown. Beautiful city, beautiful hotel and location!

The Dorp is a jewel in the heart of Capetown. You feel like you are in paradise from the very first minute and can relax to the full. The team goes out of their way to give their guests a wonderful time, the breakfast buffet is amazing and the lunch menu will blow your mind. Insider tip: The whole chicken for lunch with French fries. I would love give them 6 stars! ******

Staying at DORP is not just a hotel experience—it’s a feeling. Every corner of the property reflects an extraordinary attention to detail, from the cloud-like comfort of the beds to the thoughtfully curated spaces that feel both luxurious and personal. The food is simply phenomenal, with flavors that feel home-cooked yet refined. The staff are warm, genuine, and always eager to help making you feel right at home with a smile. There’s a kind of magic in how everything is designed to make you feel deeply cared for.

Old school charm in a heritage area in Cape Town. Very unique hotel with a story to tell. All the rooms are unique and beautiful in an old-world charm way. Overall staff great, just a bit slow in the restaurant as they were gearing up for the Friday bustle. Amazing rooftop to have a drink and view the entire city and Table Mountain, overlooking the majestic BoKap and all the colourful houses. Simple local flavours on the menu ,but everything delicious and satisfying. Little gems all around, the garden and pools delightful as well as all the history and attention to details charms and decor. Love it!!
