The Best Hotels in Cape Town for a Truly Local Stay - AFAR

"Tucked at the base of Signal Hill above the colorful houses of Bo-Kaap, this property feels like a tiny village within the city, centered on a main courtyard and café and bordered by a wild garden. Rooms are housed in a series of buildings that climb the hill and open onto rambling garden paths; each room is unique, ranging from cozy chambers to large standalone suites with kitchenettes, some offering dipping pools, terraces, steam rooms, or direct access to a rooftop garden. Instead of a traditional lobby, check-in happens beside a grand dining room and a lounge filled with fringed sofas and wingback chairs, and several rooms provide outstanding views over the City Bowl and Table Mountain." - Mary Holland

Dorp Hotel, Bo Kaap, Cape Town, South Africa - Explore & Book

"Visitors to Dorp, nestling atop Signal Hill in Cape Town, agree on one thing – it is unlike anything they’ve seen. It has the service and grandeur of an upmarket city hotel, but the charm and vibe of a boutique operation. It is chic (designed by the late fashion designer Gail Behr) and offbeat and whimsical, brimming with humour. It isn’t even really a hotel, more a collection of Georgian-inspired buildings of various sizes and styles. Perhaps the word Dorp – Afrikaans for ‘village’ – is the best description. At its heart is the Salon, where guests eat and mingle and which brings to mind a country club with its dusty-pink sofas, Persian rugs, bookshelves and fireplace. The rest is a glorious hodge-podge of influences and details that call to mind a movie set – around every corner there’s an Insta-ready backdrop of glittering pools, mirrored staircases, fairytale gardens, a sweeping roof terrace. The 27 rooms and suites continue the eclectic vibe: you could encounter florals, velvets, chaise longues, rag rugs, clawfoot tubs and artistic wallpaper. And then there are the spectacular natural backdrops with views up to Table Mountain, down to the City Bowl, and across to Table Bay and the craggy Twelve Apostles. Highs The laidback vibe. The hotel even calls itself ‘an unofficial club for oddballs, romantics, seekers of beauty’ It has wide appeal. The main Dorp hotel is great for couples and romantic weekends, while the new block of suites, called OnderDorp, are smaller and self-catering so ideal for families with teens and groups Great location – close enough to the city to get there in minutes but up and away from the bustle with glorious long views Bo Kaap itself: formerly the Malay Quarter, on the slopes of Signal Hill and renowned for its brightly coloured dwellings, it has the largest concentration of historic architecture in South Africa Lows It’s situated in the Muslim community of Bo Kaap, and so doesn’t sell alcohol – although guests are more than welcome to bring their own No kids under 14 Very limited parking There are four communal pools but they're more for dipping than swimming Lots of steps (and quite steep) so not suitable for those with mobility issues" - Handpicked by our hotel experts

Simply Exceptional: nothing cut and paste here. Gorgeous suite with magnificent views of Table Mountain, soft linen gowns, eclectic objects and books everywhere, poetic gardens, welcoming games rooms, beautiful gift shops, relaxing massages at the spa, plunge pools, romantic greenery, roof tops terraces , delicious food and professional yet friendly staff. Staying at the Dorp was like being in a dream. As Gail’s poem states: you will know if you fit in straight away. It felt like home. I never wanted to leave…

We are avid international travelers and this is one of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at. Amazing value for the price. Our meals here were better than anything else we ate in Cape Town, especially the beautiful breakfast buffet. All of the staff are amazingly kind and hospitable, and the grounds and rooms are gorgeous with all the amenities you’d expect of a 5 star hotel. Such an intimate and curated experience. We can’t wait to come back to Cape Town to stay here again!

Dorp was our first stop in South Africa and the beginning of our honeymoon. We stayed in the Gallery Suite, which was incredibly spacious with a lovely kitchen, comfortable bedroom, and a large, beautifully designed bathroom. All the little touches made it feel special, from the Dorp branded items to the complimentary snacks and drinks. We were also welcomed with a bottle of fizz and a South African wine, which was such a thoughtful gesture.||Our only small complaint is that we would have preferred to be closer to/in the main hotel. The Gallery Suite is quite a walk away, with lots of steps up to breakfast, and we hadn’t realised this when booking.||Dorp is located at the top of a hill close to Bo-Kaap, so we drove through the area several times. The hilltop location also meant we had excellent views of Table Mountain, especially from the breakfast terrace — a beautiful sight to start each morning. Breakfast was great, with lots of variety. The shakshuka and fresh fruit platters were particular highlights and made for a lovely start to the day.||We felt very safe throughout our stay. There was a strong security presence, and every time we returned in the evening we were greeted by security, which was very reassuring.||The hotel has a quirky charm, with unique décor, gorgeous flowers and plants, and beautifully designed communal rooms which offered tea, coffee, water and even complimentary gin and tonics — a lovely touch.||Overall, The Dorp was a memorable and characterful start to our honeymoon, with great views and friendly service, would recommend!

If we ever find ourselves back in Cape Town we will be sure to consider The Dorp! ||The standout feature had to be the views of Table Mountain, but also the unique nature of each room/suite, the friendliness of all the staff, the quality of the food and the interesting ‘Bring Your Own’ plan for alcoholic beverages all made our stay a real pleasure.||Walking up the hill from the centre of town is not for the faint hearted, and it can feel quite exposed when it’s windy, however, the spectacular views and the peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town more than make up for this.||Our suite had a large bedroom, bathroom with shower and separate bath, living area and separate kitchen. There was also a balcony with a lovely view of the mountain. The rooms are spread out in several buildings around the property, with pathways leading to the rooms going through beautiful gardens. The Dorp is certainly not your ‘normal’ hotel!||A big thank you to all the staff who helped make our stay so special.

Amazing 5 night stay early October. Great lounge/dining area, amazing roof top seating area giving fantastic views across Cape Town. Our room was quirky but lovely, such a comfortable bed, it wasn't that warm when we arrived and the evening turn down service switched on the electric blanket, heaven! Best nights sleep I'd had in a long time. A bottle of bubbles welcomed us as it was my birthday while we were away, thank you. |Great choices for breakfast. Evening menu was limited but we'd eaten big meals during the day so only needed something light in the evening, the food we had was great.|Would highly recommend The Dorp.

If you like quirky, interesting, comfortable, cozy, welcoming, unpretentious unique hotels then this is the place for you!!!||We spent 3 glorious evenings in the moon family suite. Our children joined us from the UK. We live in Australia. None of us are strangers to Cape Town. 30 years ago I went to UCT and my husband went to school there. ||Dorp is possibly one of the loveliest hotels I have ever stayed in. Our room had a wonderful full view of table mountain. There is a lot of attention to detail. There are books and flowers everywhere. At night candles are lit in the dining area and it’s really very lovely.||We ate lunch there on arrival and it was one of the best pieces of kingklip I had whilst in South Africa. I can also recommend the milk tart which my daughter and I naughty shared before dinner one night (I am still hoping they send me the recipe 😉). ||There are so many little extras as well that are worth commenting on. The kitchen was generously stocked with chocolates, rusks, soft drinks, tea and coffee and more. The soap in the bathroom was quite special. The linen was luxurious. All in all I would really recommend this hotel.

We had a wonderful stay at the Dorp. It's located in the colorful, historic Bo-Kaap section of Cape Town on the side of Signal Hill with stunning views of Table Mountain. Eclectic, old-world decor puts you back in time while on the property with top-notch friendly service and an extremely accommodating staff. We highly recommend staying at the Dorp, and we'll be back in the spring for a longer stay. We'd specifically like to call out Anele and Tumza for their exceptional service!

Even though my husband and I are local Capetownians, our stay at the Dorp felt like discovering a secret part of Cape Town we'd somehow missed. Every aspect is so beautifully and thoughtfully considered; from the stunningly curated interiors, to the genuinely warm service and exceptional food. The Dorp is the kind of place that feels effortlessly luxurious. Every detail has been thought through with care, creating an atmosphere that's refined yet entirely unpretentious - a difficult balance to achieve. While the entire Dorp team is fantastic, I'd like to add a special thanks to Bernadette, who welcomed us to our room and showed us the fabulous grounds and amenities. I would be remiss not to mention that our dinner service from Chanell was outstanding - she is attentive but not intrusive, professional as well as friendly, and she truly added such a fun element to our evening. We can't wait to return!
