Best San Francisco Restaurants for Spicy Food - Eater SF

"One of the most iconic Indian restaurants in San Francisco, and now with a spinoff location in Oakland, Dosa specializes in South Indian cuisine. Its namesake dish, dosa, is a crepe-like pancake made of rice and lentils, stuffed with a number of options and served alongside chutneys, fresh coconut, and sambar. If you’re at the Valencia location, try the habañero-mango masala dosa, with a habañero chile chutney. The heat builds and builds, but with a wonderful fruity warmth behind it. And you can’t miss the mixed chile uttapam — a thicker pancake served with four different kinds of chiles. If (when?) the heat catches up to you, don’t forget to order a side of cooling cucumber-yogurt raita." - Sam Chapple-Sokol

Bauer’s Four Star Favorite Holds Up After Four Star Remodel - Eater SF

"Another of Bauer’s longtime favorites, the larger, more elaborate Dosa on Fillmore Street, got an updated look for his Between Meals column. Despite the addition of chef Arun Gupta (Gramercy Tavern), many of the dishes went awry in the details." - Andrew Dalton

Delicious food! A bit on the expensive side but totally worth the price with the food, ambience and service. You may want to reserve your table before you arrive as this restaurant is usually busy and you may have to wait for over an hour on an extremely busy day. For appetizers we ordered Wada Pav (sliders) and Idli Fries. Wada Pav was delicious where as I didn't quite enjoy the Idli Fries as they were a bit dry. For main course, we ordered dosa and uttapum. They were great!

Google
Excellent South Indian food with yummy appetizers and delicious dosa (huge garnished crepes). Mostly vegetarian but some non-veg choices as well. If you ask for spicy, they will make it spicy! The location is very classy with its high ceilings and dim lights (hence the poor pictures). Service is top notch.

Google
Very high end Indian restaurant. Awesome customer service, great food and super fast service. The appetizer Corn chat is small in portion but deep in taste. Some of the dishes are pretty decent in portions and done are just enough for a bite or two. Every dish is well made and leave you wanting more. The desert, Tapioca Kheer, is truly yummy and ended up ordering more than we wanted. Don't you miss to try this out, if you like Indian desserts. Overall a great place and fantastic experience. Money well spent on an evening with the entire family.

Google
Best food ever! Everything we ordered turned out to be great, right from the idli fries, vada pao, trio of dosas and uttapam, Chennai chicken, the roasted egg masala and the multiple desserts!! Definitely coming back again with an even bigger appetite.

Google
Best meal I have had in the US!! The food was amazing and so was the service. We ordered the idli and vada sambar and fried idlis for appetizers. The food was hot, quick and delicious. THE SAMBHAR IS A MUST HAVE!! It was as good as my mother's. We had masala dosas for dinner and again, perfection. The chutneys they serve with the dishes go very well and are a great pairing. The service was timely, professional and courteous. Great place to eat. Definitely coming back.

Google
Good place for tasty South Indian delicacies. Little pricey but the ambience and service makes up for it. I ordered for a 'Thali'; while the food was tasty, the portion was for 2 or 3 people. I don't like wasting food but ended up leaving most of it on the plate.. :-(

Google
DOSA is one of, if not the best, restaurant in San Francisco. Food: Bold flavors, texture heaven, spice stories, silk road exoticism with California freshness. The small bites, desserts, and cocktails are equally memorable. Service & hospitality: Top notch and seamless It's also family owned and a truly lovely space. It's a Monday night place, a weekend treat, and a special occasion affair. I couldnt ask for more! BE HERE

Google
This restaurant has a beautiful ambience but the food is just above average, nothing really extraordinary-Being a South Indian I can cook the same food. The dishes are quite expensive and portion size is less for the price. We had masala chai, chille masala dosa, five moon uttapam and idly fry, which was 55$ all included. Service was quick and servers were friendly.

Yelp
One of the prettiest restaurants in SF for real - the interior is like an Indian wedding reception in Tulum. There's a huge dining area and a more intimate loft space. For four people, we ordered: 4 appetizers (Oysters, Rasam Poori, Chutney Platter, & Chicken) 2 entrees (Okra & Masala Dosa) Vegetarian wise, half or less of the menu is vegetarian, but I enjoyed the options we had. The okra was one of the best dishes - very creamy, savory despite the coconut base, and the okra stayed fried/crunchy even though it was in the gravy. Super satisfying! The masala dosa was a bit thick but one side was pretty crispy: the other was a bit softer and the masala tasted home made. The sambaed and chutneys were solid. I didn't eat the chicken, but my friends thought it was good but not great. It was definitely pricey but had some special dishes!

Yelp
Brunch was good but didn't blow us away. The chef is famous and we tried their sister restaurant Ettan. Recently we had a great dinner at Rooh and wanted to compare these places. - Rasam Poori: 3.8/5. Good flavor but didn't blow us away. My husband said the sauce was a little too tangy. - Shrimp vennai roast: I liked this dish the most because of the marination. My husband thought it's forgettable (what?!) - Dosa: we had to try it. The dosa was so crispy, unlike other places we tried. Chutneys were fine, nothing special. We know brunch menu isn't different from dinner. We might come back to try their dinner. The decor was tasteful, not over the top like I expected from the social media. Service was prompt and friendly enough.

Yelp
**3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars** My friend has raved about this place for the past year and I was so excited to finally check it out. Overall, super amazing ambiance and great quality Indian food. You're definitely paying for the atmosphere though because while the food is good, I think there are cheaper spots for even better Indian food, but it's just a lot more casual (like Palawan or Udupi Palace). My favorite dishes were the Littles, which included the Rasam Poori, Thattukanda Fried Chicken, and Shrimp Vennai Roast. They were all very unique and had great flavor. The Larges didn't feel as special to me. My favorite one was probably the Mysore Masala Dosa, but it was double the price of the one from my favorite spot. There was also a really yummy spongy coconut flatbread that came with it. The Lamb Shoulder Chettinand and Chicken Biryani were on the salty side to me, but tasted like classic Indian dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
Really yummy elevated Indian food in a gorgeous setting! The interior is modern and bohemian with tapestries that really set the ambiance. For food my friend ordered the Rasam Poori to start and then shared the Black Cod Pollichathu and Chicken Biryani. The Rasam Poori was fun and a creative take on pani puri with a passion fruit base. I really loved the Black Cod which was melt in your mouth and served with coconut rice. The biryani was good as well but we've had other great biryanis in the Bay so this wasn't as exciting. Will definitely be back to try more of the menu! Everything was delicious and although we didn't order drinks, the cocktail menu looked great as well.

Yelp
This is the restaurant I tell people the most about. I don't even live in San Francisco anymore but I'll still talk about it. I went for brunch and was just enamored. First of all the decor is stunning. I read they have an interior designer and it truly adds to the experience. The service was great too. I loved that they tell you a little about the food but it's not in like a pretentious way. They were very attentive and everything came pretty quickly. I got the rasam poori, shrimp venai roast, and mysore masala dosa. The rasam poori was a must and the shrimp venai roast I still think about. The dosa was good but I do think it was less special than the others. Also had coffee and it was so good. All in all I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
We started our meal at Copra with three appetizers: Rasam Puri, Shrimp Vennai Roast, and Slow-Cooked Octopus. The Rasam Puri was a fun and creative take on pani puri, using a passion fruit base that gave it a unique, tangy flavor. I thought it was a great twist on a classic dish and really delicious. The Shrimp Vennai Roast, which was recommended by the chef, was my favorite appetizer. The spices were bold and flavorful, and the dish was perfectly cooked. On the other hand, the Slow-Cooked Octopus didn't impress me. The texture was inconsistent--some parts were too chewy, while others were crunchy--which made it hard to enjoy fully. For our main dishes, we ordered the Mysore Masala Dosa and the Southern Kerala Shrimp Mango Curry with Egg Appam. The Masala Dosa was my partner's favorite. It came with three chutneys and a sambar that really brought out the flavors of the dosa. If you've never tried dosa before, this dish is a great introduction because the different dips make it really exciting to eat. The Shrimp Mango Curry was my favorite dish of the night. The curry was flavorful and well-spiced without being too spicy, so it's perfect for people who aren't used to a lot of heat but still love rich flavors. The egg appam was a nice addition, but it didn't add much to the dish. Still, the curry itself was so good that I highly recommend ordering it. We also tried a non-alcoholic drink called Salty City, which reminded me of a lassi because of its creamy coconut yogurt base. It was refreshing, but I recommend stirring it well before drinking since the spices and black garlic can settle at the bottom and become too strong if you don't mix it. For dessert, we chose Watalappan and God's Own Coconut Version. The Watalappan wasn't my favorite. It had a texture like flan but with a very strong and concentrated flavor. Adding the butterscotch cream helped balance it, but overall, I found it too heavy to really enjoy. The God's Own Coconut Version, however, was fantastic. It was light, refreshing, and creative, with coconut water crystals, candied basmati puffs, sabja seeds, and mango. This dessert was definitely the highlight and a perfect way to end the meal. The atmosphere was bustling and very lively. It's a social space with a lot of energy, making it feel less like traditional fine dining and more like a casual yet elevated experience. We sat on the second floor, where the noise level was high but added to the vibrant atmosphere. Despite the busyness, the service was excellent. Our servers were attentive, regularly checking in and ensuring we had everything we needed. The food came out on time, and we felt well taken care of throughout the meal. Overall, Copra was a great experience with lots of bold and exciting flavors. While some dishes didn't stand out, others--like the Shrimp Vennai Roast, Shrimp Mango Curry, and God's Own Coconut Version--made the visit absolutely worth it.

Yelp
Copra definitely was a nostalgic experience, reminding me of some of the fine dining places I have been to in India! Reservations were a bit tough to get but it is definitely worth it since the inside is gorgeous and bohemian with indian prints and tapestries and definitely transports you to feeling like you have stepped foot into an indian palace. For food, my friends and I got the Mysore masala Dosa, the Chutney plate, the spiced shrimp and the bread pudding dessert. The chutney palette comes with Papad to try it with, but be warned the spices hit and are not to be taken lightly. The masala Dosa was perfectly crispy with just the right amount of crunch and butteriness and the chutney/potato curry paired perfectly. Besides the dosa my second favorite dish was definitely the spiced shrimp which were hot and juicy, while the bread pudding was a tad too sweet for my liking. All in all Copra is a must try if you are craving excellent indian food around San Francisco!

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant, delicious, fresh flavors. Very cool and fun mixtures of flavors. I especially liked the beets with curry leaves and grapes. The restaurant is beautiful and perfect for dinner or in the day. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
So glad I finally got to try Copra! The interior is so gorgeous, honestly feels like you've been transported to a tropical vacation. Came for a late lunch on a Saturday and it was nice and quiet. Service was kind of strange - waiters were mumbly and quiet and didn't seem to know much about the menu, but the food was so good that it made up for it. Started with the THAYIR VADAI CHAAT - personally I would skip this. It was beautifully plated and well made, but I'm not a fan of how sweet it was. The grapes and date chutney made it almost dessert-like. Not exactly how I picture starting a meal but my friend loved it. Split the Brunch Biryani, Mutta Paniyara Curry, and coconut rice for mains. Out of everything, the Biryani is a MUST try. So tender and flavorful. The coconut rice, despite how simple it is, was one of the best coconut rices I've ever had. The Mutta Curry was also phenomenal, I've never had egg in curry before but it was the perfect way to incorporate "typical" brunch food into the meal. Portions were massive, we ended up finishing everything but could've each taken leftovers home if we were able to control ourselves. Will definitely be back to try dinner sometime!

Yelp
It was my first visit to Copra and it was during a private holiday party. The service throughout the night was outstanding! We were greeted at the door with champagne and the wait at the bar was not bad considering we had such a large group. Servers throughout the night were everywhere with apps and drinks and were very attentive. The main course was set up buffet style and the desserts at the end of the night were fantastic!

Yelp
Thoroughly impressed with my meal here at Copra. I admit I'm not super well versed in food from Kerala, but everything was incredibly tasty and prepared with high technique. I had the Black Cod and Hamachi Kama that were absolutely delicious, among other starters. The flavors were unapologetically bold, and I just appreciate the care put into every dish. I'd come back again in a heartbeat. Don't skip the desserts and cocktails. The Kokum and Smoke was an absolute banger of a drink.

Yelp
Lovely modern South Indian restaurant. As a South Indian, I am very excited to see this type of modern take on the food I grew up loving! Service and decor is phenomenal. The decor is especially notable, with beautiful light fixtures and a high end tropical vibe. Portions are larger than many other fine dining establishments. Some highlights include the fried chicken, perfectly marinated with a lovely crunchy coconut podi style topping, and the vennai shrimp which is also excellently spiced. I love the rasam puris as well. Very good black pepper rasam. Would definitely go for more of the smaller plates than the mains. However the cod dish was notable from the large dish menu. Also love the fusion drinks available here. All in all very excited to have a modern twist on my favorite comfort foods! Will definitely be back

Yelp
The food at Copra has me dreaming about it a few days later. We came here as a group and despite being on the waitlist for 5:30pm we were able to get a reservation the day before. We got seated right on time and noticed the ambience was truly magnificent. This restaurant is worthy of a celebration dinner. We did indicate a birthday but didn't receive any special service for it though. The service was alright, in my opinion the waiter may have spent too long explaining every single dish but if you like that it's great. Our group was a little confused by it. The service here isn't amazing but the food is worth it. We got a lot of dishes: Oysters 10/10: the oysters were really high quality and served with a undeniably flavorful rassam. Puri 8/10: they were amazing and very very unique Truffle and Egg Appam 6/10: I thought it lacked flavor and didn't love it but others in my party thought it was the best dish Fried Chicken 8/10: juicy chicken with loads of flavor Prawn roast 7/10: really good but thought it was a tad over cooked Dosa 5/10: this dosa didn't match up to ones you can get as a regular dosa joint in my opinion Lamb Shoulder 10/10: great portion size with lots of meat and the curry is addictive Hamachi Curry 7/10: I love the flavor so much but it just needed more, everything else was so punchy that I wanted the same from this I would love to come again and order the things I know are good and try some other things we didn't try like the fish in banana leaves.

Yelp
A fine dinning experience of Indian coastal cuisine. Copra translates to "coconut" , so all the dishes have coconut as its star ingredient! Limited vegetarian choices , However everything we ordered was pretty good! Just more innovative vegetarian options would be a great addition to the menu!

Gin C.

Yelp
This was recommended by a friend to imagine a new take on Indian food. The place is beautifully decorated and the service was excellent with multiple staff checking in on you. We had the following dishes: Tender Jack "Sixty Five" - a little too spicy and overpowering the jackfruit That's Idly - I really like the texture, was surprising well flavored Edamame Paripppu Urundai - simple dish, wished for more flavor Cardamom Pave - cardamom ice cream I thought was great if not mix with the berry jam on the side Ginger-cardamom Chaya - great Tiger's Eye - also excellent I did not pay so I don't know what was the final cost. I wish the food came out faster as it took a little longer to come out. The place was not packed as we saw people walking in getting a seat at the bar.

Yelp
This visit to Copra was a major disappointment, especially given our high expectations. Food: The Varuval Spice-Crusted Hamachi Collar was nearly inedible--full of bones, with a crust so hard it felt like it could damage our teeth. The appetizers were normal. Service: I initially ordered Cava, but after tasting it, I asked for the sparkling menu again. The waiter pushed champagne on me instead and never brought the menu back. We also felt neglected the entire time while sitting at the bar. The poor quality of both the food and service makes it unlikely I'll return or recommend this place.

Yelp
In a world full of fancy Indian restaurants specializing in North Indian/Punjabi dishes, Copra stands out as an upscale South Indian (Kerala) style restaurant in SF's high end dining scene. The interior is characterized by a tropical vibe, and the service here is great. I particularly appreciated how the servers explained the intricacies of each dish. My personal favorite dish was the rasam poori- a South Indian take on pani poori. The fried chicken was decadent and the shrimp mango curry carried the classic tangy, coconutty flavor of Kerala style cooking. The desserts were a bit of a miss for us- if you had to choose one, I would recommend the wattalapan. Overall, this place is a must try restaurant especially if you are looking for something different than the typical Indian restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Came for brunch with the girls and we loved it! The restaurant itself is stunning and has lots of natural light which we loved. The service was great and our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave us great recommendations. The rasam poori is a must, if you only get one thing from here, PLEASE let it be this because it was truly divine, like an explosion of flavor and textures. We ordered another one immediately after we tried it. I'm already thinking about going back just so I can have it again .. The dosa was also delicious and we loved how flavorful the chutneys and sambar were. The black pepper wings were packed with flavor yet tender and soft on the inside. Literally a perfect meal. We also got the cardamom toast for dessert which was also delicious- though the adult version with the rum-infused ice cream was too rum forward for me. I will definitely be back! What a fun dining experience :)

Yelp
Food and service are always amazing! Not to mention the inside of the restaurant is so stunning. Best part is that I never break the bank coming to this Michelin guide place!

Yelp
I've finally gotten around to writing this review after a year, but wanted to share my thoughts given how poor our experience was. We dined here in November 2023 with a large group of people, getting one of the tasting menu sets. After our delicious dinner, we accidentally got an itemized receipt from the restaurant showing how much each individual item costs as opposed to ordering the tasting menu. As we were inquisitive, we asked the server if this was correct and why the tasting menu price was different. The server didn't know the answer and brought over the manager - this is when my night turned absolutely sour. The manager was very brash and aggressive with us about how we shouldn't have gotten that receipt and that the tasting menu was "different." Our assumption was that the portion sizes were different, but he just didn't allude to anything, just kept repeating that they were "different." While we were having this discussion, he kept raising his voice at us which really worsened the mood at the table. After some time and thought, I believe it is worth sharing my experience just to warn future diners. While I'm a big proponent of food over service, the manager experience here was just too abysmal for me to recommend a visit.

Yelp
This restaurant is absolutely beautiful! The service during my visit on Wednesday night was outstanding. Although we didn't have reservations (which are recommended), the host was incredibly welcoming and accommodating, and managed to seat us in the green room. The bartenders and waitstaff were equally friendly and attentive. As for the food, we ordered the Venai Shrimp Roast (6.5/10). It was flavorful, though a bit pricey for the portion size. The bone marrow was rich and delicious (8/10), and the Dosa was my favorite, earning a solid 9/10. We also tried the Kosi Gassi, a chicken curry served with a coconut pancake, which reminded me of Ethiopian injera. The curry was very good (8/10), and while the pancake wasn't bad, I think I would've preferred rice with it. However, dipping the dosa into the curry was a pleasant surprise--it was delicious! Overall, I'd definitely return. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the flavors were on point!

Yelp
Absoluting amazing food here and incredible decor. We went as a fairly large group of 6 and ordered a ton. Our friend had been so many times she was about to recite the explanation and the service staff thought it was hilarious. Between the great service and amazing food we had a blast and cant wait to come back

Yelp
I expected more stand out flavors and was underwhelmed. I was mainly disappointed with the Kerala porrotta... only 1 small piece not proportional to the amount of curry served especially as a main dish and too crispy like Thai roti. Given how many variations of porrotta there are out there, I was really hoping a Kerala chef would represent Kerala porrotta well. We liked the pani poori - it was bright and had a good combination of flavors and textures. The shrimp Venai roast and dessert (brunch toast) was pretty good. Pepper wings were meh. Decor was interesting though generically "tropical chic" like what you'd find in Tulum resorts.

Yelp
We sat at the bar, and the bartenders provided excellent service! The cocktails were incredible, and I highly recommend trying the Ground Up if you enjoy balanced cocktails with hints of spice. The food was delicious, and my personal favorite was the lamb--it was incredibly tender, with a rich, spice-filled sauce. The decor is minimalistic yet thoughtfully detailed, creating a visually appealing experience.

Yelp
Copra is another word for coconut, which is very fitting as the restaurant has dishes influenced by the chef's hometown in Kerala. The same owners as Ettan in Palo Alto, Copra gives off an authentic south indian fine dining experience. The interior atmosphere is absolutely stunning. The service was top notch, and the food was delicious as expected. We got the mamu cutlet, the beach peanut masala wrap, & green apple paalkatti korma with some flakey paratha on the side. For drinks we got the jaggery sour, and the clarified lassi punch (which is whiskey that comes out clear as water) both delicious as well. We finished with dessert and chai. The chai seemed to have been pre-made based on the color and taste. Overall a wonderful experience!
google avatar

Mugdha S.

Yelp
Nice ambience, okay food, service could be much better! Though Copra is a nice restaurant, it falls short of being in the top tier of Indian fine dining options in San Francisco. I have now been here twice and my opinion remains unchanged. I do love the interiors - they are spectacular and very Instagrammable! There is room for improvement with the service. The first time we went, the server was unable to recommend dishes to us based on our dietary preferences, and we ended up ordering foods that lacked creativity. The second time around, we got bar seats and were served promptly with good appetizer recommendations, but the server forgot to let us know that last call for ordering entrees had passed so we ended up returning home after only eating appetizers and a dessert. That made for a very unpleasant experience! The first time, I tried their vegetarian platter entree and found it quite mediocre. The flavors, the ingredients, the presentation were all basic at best. The second time around, I tried some seafood appetizers which were an elevated version of Kerala cuisine, but still lacked the finesse and innovation of dishes served at other upscale restaurants in SF. Especially as a vegetarian / pescatarian, we felt like the menu was limited. The cocktails and desserts were good though, but overpriced considering our overall experience was not great.

Yelp
4.5 stars. Downside is it's a little spendy. 3rd time here. Try something different every time and always delightful. This time: bone marrow, chicken biryani rice, octopus were favorites. Excellent service. Never had our water glasses filled so many times!

Yelp
Upscale Indian dinning. Food is innovative & great. Fried chicken, Shrimp Vennai roast, Soft shell Crab, Tahir Vada chat were all very tasty well done. The Mamu cutlet was a bit of a downer, pretty dry with a funky mushroom taste. Kori Gassi - Mangalorean chicken with Appam was the standout dish. Also loved the Dindigul Chicken biryani, light & tasty. The dish I was looking forward to - Coorgi Pandi(Pork) curry was a letdown, pretty bitter in taste, overpowering the natural taste of Pork belly. Felt like an overdose of Curry leaf aftertaste. Watalappan, a Sri Lankan dessert is a must try. Nice ambience, top-notch service & had a great time with family. Must try for special occasions.

Yelp
Had the opportunity to come in for a tasting menu. Each dish was incredible. Brilliant presentation, amazing flavors, wonderful service and very nice ambiance in the private room. Highly recommend for private events. Indian family and friends were very pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of the flavors. Must try: - poori - koori gassi - black cod pollichathu - watapallan (dessert) - filter coffee

Yelp
Went to this place while I was visiting SF after it being recommended by numerous friends - and it did not disappoint! Everything was so delicious and I can see why everyone was raving about it. This is definitely a good upscale representation of a more South Indian palate and flavors which is hard to find elsewhere. We ordered a few drinks, all were very tasty and the flavors all worked well together. For dishes, we ordered pani puri, beef bone marrow with parota, mysore masala dosa, the black cod wrapped in banana leaf, and another mushroom appetizer. I thought everything tasted wonderful and the presentation was really beautiful. The interior of the restaurant was also very pretty and well thought out. Our orders were taken promptly, servers were attentive, and food and drinks came out rather quickly, so that was appreciated.

Yelp
I finally made it to Copra! Last time I was turned away due to a lack of reservation and full capacity so I was determined to return. Really enjoyed the food and it's definitely worth all the hype. Each dish here is definitely its own experience. I got the hamachi collar and it definitely can be shared by 2, especially with an appetizer. I really enjoyed the unique way the fish was cooked. The coconut rice and bean salad sides really balanced out the entree. I do wish the gravy was a bit more flavorful since it just had a strong tomatoey base flavor. I've recently been on an oyster binge and these oysters were so good with the tamarind chutney! I didn't try the dosas but I highly recommend getting something you wouldn't see on a menu at a local Indian restaurant - you will be amazed. Our drinks were all delicious. I personally enjoyed the lemon chili. The non alcoholic were insanely overpriced but really good and unique. I love Copra and can't wait to be back for brunch!

Yelp
We were able to get a reservation for this place on Resy. The place has a really pretty vibe. If given an option would love to be seated downstairs. The vibe upstairs did not match. As vegetarians we tried the following for a brunch on a Saturday afternoon ; Rassam Puri : 5/5. We had such low expectations for this item that we were really impressed by the combination. Usually pani puris can be hit or a miss. Thaiyyar vada chaat : 3/5. This was good. Nothing exceptional. Tender Jack 65: 5/5. Really enjoyed this one as well. It had a tasty coating and was just the right amount of crispy. Mysore Masala Dosa : 3/5. This was a really well done dosa with came with some tasty potato. The sambar and chutney that came with it very basic. Not worth the price point. Uttapam - 4/5. At first glance it did look like there was lot going on with the toppings. But it was surprisingly good. Salty lassi - 1/5. You can definitely skip this one. There was too much going on with this non alcoholic drink. We did not enjoy it. We definitely ordered too much for a party of two. Also felt like the chaat and Rassam puri weren't really brunch items.

We celebrated birthday here of a family member. It was a perfect place in a quaint neighborhood. The decor is with natural jute ropes and greenery around. Service was also something to mention, specially when the Indian dish is explained to an Indian. The entire course of food was delicious.

Yelp
Overall: 4/5 Service: Make reservations on Resy as early as you can. When you arrive, be prepared to be seated right on time. Not a minute early. We went in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. Every available table was taken. Ambience: The interior exudes a cozy and eclectic vibe, combining natural elements with artistic decor. The hanging light fixtures have a bohemian, handcrafted aesthetic, with woven and macrame designs, adding a rustic and artistic touch to the space. There is an abundance of greenery with lush plants, although artificial, hanging from the ceiling and placed around the space, contributing to a fresh and vibrant atmosphere. The walls are a mix of exposed brick and neutral colors, providing a balance between rustic and modern design elements. The high ceiling high contributes to an open and airy feel. Food: We were dining for 3. Appetizers were decent. Rasam Poori (3/5) AKA paani poori. Taste was predictable, well done. The poori size was a little too large for my jaw to accommodate. I'd love if they kept it bite sized. Thayir Vadai Chaat (4/5) AKA dahi wada. Probably the most authentic moderately "sweet" dahi wada I've had in the Bay Area. Some interesting ingredients: green grapes, cashew, gathiya! Most places serve them like a savory. I'm glad they didn't comply! Shrimp Vennai Roast (5/5) Perfect. I'll add that this is exactly how it's made in my Keralite home. Well done, Chef Sri. The plating in a "Copra" (Marathi for dried coconut shell) was fitting for a signature dish. I also liked the cucumber garnish, which brought a refreshing texture to the spicy shrimp. Note: The menus keep changing as per the whims of the chef I was told. We didn't find Tatthukada Fried Chicken in their July menu. Main: Mysore Masala Dosa (5/5) Perfect dosa. The coconut chutney was outstanding, so was the sambar. Dindigul style chicken biryani (3/5) This was a let down. The rice was "shredded". Just know that this is not your basmati rice. If you're familiar with the jeera samba rice, which looks like quinoa, you might appreciate it. Taste was good. We thought the chicken could have been spicier. It was well cooked and tender nvtl. We ordered the mimosa and red wine. Along with cardamom chaya and a dessert, Watalappan. Dessert was a 2.5/5 for me. TL;DR: I'd overindulge in the appetizers over the dessert at this place. Note for the restaurant: This is 2024. You want to find a way to accept Apple Pay at the table or rely on a QR code for quick and prompt payments instead of having guests walk over to the bar. Overall, I thought Copra does a good job with the taste but certainly doesn't meet the fine dining bar that you'd otherwise find at, let's say, a similar restaurant in NYC for this price. Come for the vibes, the taste, and for the reprieve from San Francisco's conventional dining.

Yelp
I was planning dinner with a good friend and he asked that we go to an Indian restaurant. Copra immediately came to mind. I've been here a couple of times and the flavors have always been consistently great. On this outing, we shared the rasam poori, thayir vidal chaat, hamachi collar, black cod, lamb shoulder and the God's own coconut variation. The rasam poori and chaat are very traditional appetizers and are always a good way to start. Of the entrees, the hamachi collar was hands down the best though the black cod and the lamb shoulder were really good on their own right. The food here can be spicy - not the burn you variety but the slow heat kind where you start sweating in the middle of the meal. The God's own coconut variation is a great shaved ice dessert to finish out a wonderful South Indian meal. The service was good and the restaurant is a bit cavernous with different sections. I've been seated in the main dining room and now the upstairs. The upstairs seating is a lot less noisy and is really cozy. With tax and tip, this was around $120 per person, which is typical for a good dinner in SF these days. Highly, highly recommended!!!

Yelp
My girlfriends and I don't eat Indian food a lot, but we were drawn to Copra by their cute decor. I'm so glad we tried it because we all enjoyed our meal so much! We were even surprised at how reasonably priced things were when we got the bill. We ordered to share: rasam poori (so unique and unlike anything we've had before--we loved it!), thattukada fried chicken (loved the crispy masala crumbs that came with it and the aioli! delicious dish), varuval spice crusted hamachi collar (the hamachi collar was perfectly cooked and the curry it was in was decadent), and the mysore masala dosa (I was surprised at the huge portion size! We all loved this because it was so fun to eat). Everything was so flavorful and delicious, i'd love to come back and try more of their menu.

Yelp
Great food, aesthetic interiors and fast, pleasant and great service! We visited Copra to celebrate a Birthday and were very happy with the evening! The drinks are amazing - the kokum and lassi cocktails are really great! The food is good - we tried the shrimp appetizers and the lamb entree and both were really good. The appam and dosas were delicious.

Yelp
Copra has a great vibe and really nice decor. The servers were very nice and helpful. They make you pick your entire order in the beginning and then "course" it for you which I thought was pretty cool. The food itself was pretty good but it was not as exceptional as I was expecting, especially given the price tag. I enjoyed my visit there but I'm not sure if it's worth going back.

Yelp
Overall a wonderful experience. The service was attentive and was very careful with one of our groups allergies. The shrimp were so good we ordered it again for dessert. Everything was nicely prepared. Only knock is the fish dish was a super small portion

Yelp
Our group did private dining for dinner on the 2nd fl for my friend's wedding last week. It was such a huge variety of food, and was delicious. We loved the shrimp vennai roast, poori, masala dosa, black cod, and biryani. The coconut dessert was also such a nice finish. Food came really quickly, which is impressive for a ~30 person group. Only issue was that the drinks menu is more limited upstairs, which is reasonable. Decor is beautiful. I'd love to come here as a smaller group during brunch hours since it looks like there would be great natural lighting.

Yelp
I had been to Ettan in Palo Alto a couple years ago and absolutely loved it, so when I heard about Copra in SF, I couldn't wait to try it! I made a reservation for 3 people at 6:15pm on a Tuesday. We arrived at 6 and within a few minutes were seated. Just like Ettan, the interior is striking and transports you! Our waiter was very attentive and offered suggestions on the menu as we weren't sure what everything was. One thing about the service was that they were very quick to change our plates. As I lifted the last bite of my appetizer, an arm swooped down to clear my plate to get ready for the main course. Out of the 8 dishes we ordered (3 appetizers, 2 mains, 2 desserts), only 2 really stood out to us - the Rasam Poori appetizer and the Black Cod Pollichathu main. One thing our group discussed was that we are not as familiar with these flavors, so perhaps our palates need time to adjust, but beside that I felt like I was craving different tastes and textures in some of the dishes. Though I was a bit underwhelmed with my first experience at Copra, I'm open to coming again and trying other dishes!

Yelp
Finally was able to make it to Copra after it opened. It's pretty rare to see modern restaurants that have South Indian food as they mostly have north Indian food, so I was excited to try this. My boyfriend and I had a reservation for 6pm on a Sunday, where it was very busy when we were there. The inside is so pretty with all the macrame, but we unfortunately got seated upstairs which doesn't have the same macrame decorations so it didn't feel like the same royal ambaince you may expect to have. If you wish to sit downstairs, I feel like making that request within the reservation notes would be important, but I wasn't aware. There seemed to be more group tables rather than 2 person tables as well, and it was pretty packed in there as if they're really trying to cram as many people in there as possible. Nonetheless, we still enjoyed the food. We ordered the rasam poori and thattukada fried chicken as appetizers. Both were so tasty and I think were the stars of the meal! The rasam poori was a really cool take on pani poori, and I could really taste the flavors of the rasam and the passion fruit. The fried chicken was also very tasty, loved the crispy masala on top. Overall recommend these two as appetizers if you come here! For mains, I ordered the Mysore masala dosa while my boyfriend ordered the black cod. I took the masala dosa tasted pretty good, but is definitely expensive for a dosa. It was very crispy and had the right flavors though. I do wish it was spicier given that it is a Mysore masala dosa. I really enjoyed all the chutneys and sambar on the side as well. My boyfriend said the cod was super tender and smooth and was unlike anything he's tasted before, so he enjoyed that! As we were celebrating a birthday, we also ordered "God's Own" as a dessert and they also brought out a complimentary birthday mango ice cream with a candle. The dessert we ordered apparently is the most popular one, but to be honest I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have hoped, so I would order something different for the dessert. We both really enjoyed the mango ice cream though! I would still come back here to enjoy the appetizers for sure and maybe try some different ones as well, but definitely recommend if you're wanting to enjoy a modern take on South Indian food!

Yelp
It's a 4/5 for me with some reservations. Copra offers a unique dining experience in San Francisco. The stunning decor transports you to a tropical paradise, with dramatic elements like a wooden greenhouse and vintage tropical wallpaper. It's a feast for the eyes, and for a special occasion, the private dining options in the mezzanine are perfect, accommodating intimate gatherings of up to 45 people. The menu is a love letter to Chef Sri's homeland, Kerala, featuring dishes inspired by street carts, weddings, and even beach shacks. It's a journey through the flavors of Southern India and Sri Lanka, and for the adventurous eater, it's a real treat. We started with a selection of appetizers. The Mamu Cutlet with lemon raita was a solid choice, offering a comforting familiarity. However, the Gunpowder Goli Vadai was a letdown. The fritters themselves were bland, and unfortunately, the coconut chutney didn't add much needed zip. Thankfully, things picked up with the mains. The Rasam Poori was a revelation - bursting with flavor and light as air. The passion fruit and mint added a refreshing touch, and I highly recommend trying it. The Thattukada Fried Chicken was another winner. The masala crumbs offered a delightful textural contrast, and the overall spice level was just right. Our server suggested three appetizers and three entrees for our party of three, but it's worth noting that the portion sizes are on the smaller side. While perfectly adequate, they weren't quite as substantial as we were led to believe. The Black Cod Polllichathu had potential. The fish itself was cooked beautifully, but the dish lacked flavor even after incorporating the accompanying broth. The Lamb Shoulder Chettinad, however, was a star. The lamb was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the Chettinad spices added a depth of flavor that was truly satisfying. It came with kal-dosai, making it a complete and delicious experience. For dessert, we opted for the Mango + Coastal Halwa. This dish was a bit of a disappointment. The description promised halwa, but the reality was more like shaved ice with some fresh mango chunks. While the mango was undeniably sweet and delicious, the price tag felt excessive for what was essentially an expensive bowl of ice. Overall, Copra offers a vibrant atmosphere and a unique take on South Indian cuisine. Some dishes hit the mark perfectly, like the Rasam Poori and Lamb Shoulder Chettinad, while others fall a bit short. With a little more consistency in the execution, Copra could be a truly exceptional restaurant.

Yelp
Copra is an upscale Indian restaurant inspired by the culinary connections between Southern India and Northwestern Sri Lanka. Their menu is so innovative with unique dishes we'd never seen before. We started with the Périgord Black Truffle Soft Egg Appam pancake and the Rasam Poori but with a slightly sweet passion fruit filling. The Chargilled Bone Marrow dish was amazing and we had to have a side of basmati rice to soak up all the extra sauce. The Thattukada Fried Chicken and Shrimp Vennai Roast w/chili chutney had the perfect spice to it. The desserts we tried, a fresh Mango+Coastal Halwa candied paste and their signature "Gods Own " coconut shaved ice w/bits of mango & candied basmati rice

Yelp
One of the best dining experiences I've had in SF. I got a reservation here last minute because I'd heard good things, and it did not disappoint! The food was outstanding. It's hard to choose a favorite dish because they were all so delicious. The shrimp roast was probably the most flavorful and addicting dish I've had. Other dishes we enjoyed were the cod and the bone marrow. The kallappam was also really unique and reminded me of some fermented rice desserts I've had before. Don't miss out on the dessert! The textures and flavors of this dessert were actually unforgettable. Overall, an amazing dinner, and maybe one of the only expensive meals in SF that I fully feel was worth it. There's a lot of tables inside, so it does get kind of loud.

Yelp
I am so impressed by this place! The unique twist on all the food items was done extremely well. Every item clearly paid homage to its source material but the chef wasn't afraid to take creative liberties. Presentation was clean and eye catching. Portions were generally reasonable for the price, though the chai serving was quite meager for $5. Service was super friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend coming here on either a group outing or even an intimate evening for two!

Yelp
Had a great time here! My husband made a reservation for 2 for my birthday. We walked in to a gorgeous interior. The decor is beautifully decorated with different ropes and greenery. Our server was friendly and we ordered a good amount of dishes. My favorites were definitely the black truffle soft egg appam and the black cod wrapped in banana leaves. The dishes were rich in flavor and well balanced with the fresh herbs. It was nice to enjoy a fancy twist on traditional Indian dishes. Would love to come back!

Yelp
Wow - such great food that embodies true flavors but finds a creative twist. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful - more fun to sit in the main area than the upper level, as the decor is more elaborate. We ordered many different dishes and truly all of it was so good. I would easily go back again.
