Doug Murdick’s Rooftop Box of Fudge – Traverse City, Michigan - Gastro Obscura

"Doug Murdick’s Fudge opened its first store in downtown Traverse City in 1964. In 1965, they opened a second location along U.S. 31 in nearby Acme Township. The newer spot quickly distinguished itself with an iconic decoration: a giant box of fudge on its roof. The highway-facing fudge shop is situated directly across the road from the blue waters of East Bay and is an easily recognizable landmark due to its sweet signage. The Acme store is open during the prime tourist season (May through October), but the iconic box of fudge is visible throughout the year Given the number of fudge shops dotting many towns in Northern Michigan and their immense popularity with the tourists, those vacationing ā€œup North,ā€ especially the ones who frequent multiple fudge shops, are often referred to as ā€œfudgiesā€ by local residents. Know Before You Go The fudge shop is located on the east side of U.S. 31. During the winter months, the parking lot may not be plowed." - rickbbiking

Came in a few weeks ago and got 3 flavors of fudge. All were fresh and none lasted beyond our family vacation. Delicious. Looking forward to trying more varieties next season!

Google
Not sure how you knew it, but I've been craving murdicks fudge for weeks now, but I haven't been in there to buy any for years. Good minds reading whoever showed this on my blog. SCARY!!!

Google
5/5 Stars This fudge is outstanding. The cookies and cream is unmatched. I almost ate the whole thing after buying it. I would definitely recommend this place for some good fudge. The place could use a little music or something. When I walked in it was absolutely silent. I could hear myself breathing.

Google
Need their address to place an order. Thought my friend would be close to traverse City coming back from the UP, but not close enough 😄. Doug murdick's fudge is the best I have ever eaten!

Google
Excellent fudge. I stopped by on my recent trip to northern Michigan and the fudge was really good. I've tried 5 or 6 flavors and haven't found any that I don't like. I do recommend trying the cherry fudge though as that seems to be meta local (fudge and cherries).

Google
I bought 5 different flavors of fudge to take back home for family and friends, it was so stale, some were hard. I'm so disappointed. I've bought there before but this time was awful. Not a happy experience

Google
Great place to stop in Traverse City. Several flavors & a few souvenirs available. Love the chocolate walnut made fresh!

Google
We always stop here for fudge when we visit Traverse City. They have a great selection and every option always tastes great. They'll let you sample the fudge before you buy it. I also love the location it has. It has its own parking lot that is easier to get in and out of because it's not in the busy downtown area. Staff is always friendly here.

Yelp
Maybe I was expecting a tad bit more? Maybe they are better during the summer. The cool factor about this location, is that you can watch them making fudge. There is an old timely feel about the store. Display cases full of various varieties of fudge couple with rows of various other merch and food items. The fudge itself was mid. I appreciated that it came with a butter knife that allowed me to eat it throughout the week. Would I be here again? Meh, probably not. The workers were talking (maybe a son and father) and the one who did help me, she seemed as if she didn't want to be there. Who knows; maybe it's not the coolest job to have during a weekend.

Yelp
Fudge. That's it. Good fudge. Actually, GREAT fudge. There's not much else to say. Service was fine. The shop is basically a factory for fudge. They sell a few other little trinkets and the obligatory Michigan shot glass, but their only reason to exist is fudge, and they nailed it.

Yelp
This was a fun stop on our family vacation. I've driven by this place probably 20 times or more over the years during our visits to Traverse City. Up until this most recent visit that I had never actually stopped in. All of the usual suspects are available here, fudge, taffy, sodas, and other types of treats. The young lady that was working the counter was very polite and pleasant to talk to for a few minutes. The fudge we purchased was for my son, who indicated it was delicious. You can't beat the view from the front door of course, and maybe that's reason enough to stop here as opposed to visiting their location in town. I would absolutely consider coming back.

Yelp
amazing fudge .. glad they were open on Sunday as it was our last day. They will give you samples so you make sure you get one you like. I got the choc/peanutbutter combo and the choc/salted caramel and some for family .. they loved it.

Yelp
OVERATED & OVER PRICED!! We sought this place out as one of the "must see" tourists points in Traverse City. We were served by "stiff" service reps. We tasted 3 flavors and puchased 4 of the half blocks of fudge. When got home and opened our boxes we were shocked to find that our sample slivers and possibly others had be cut out of the half block we purchased because there was MUCH LESS than 1/2 block of 2 of the flavors in our boxes. This cheap trick felt like a rip off. Store atmosphere was out dated and boring. We will not go back to Murdick's. On future trips we will seek out other fudge companies. Down Right Disgusted!

Yelp
Tasty chocolate fudge! Deliciously creamy, full of flavor. We stopped here on an evening stroll and loved the atmosphere and variety of flavors.

Yelp
Let me start off that I have an insatiable sweet tooth (but not too much with fudge). This was recommended by a family friend as THE BEST fudge shop in Traverse City so we had to stop. I was in Mackinaw Island the week prior and went to all of their shops. This location doesn't seem like it would be the best since it is a little out of the city center yet this is where all of the fudge is made. Even if you don't have a sweet tooth just go there for the show of them making the fudge. From heating it in the copper kettle, to putting it in the frames on the tables, to whipping air into it, and forming it. It really is quite an experience. We did get 4 half pound sections (if you buy 3 you get one free) and they have around 20 flavors of fudge. On top of that they have a whole section dedicated to other sweets and specialties of the area. The fudge is super rich, tastes amazing, and was a hit with the family and went super quick when I brought it into work for my colleagues to try out. Stop on by for the show and leave some room for all of the samples!

Yelp
Best fudge in TC. I have been visiting this store since I was a wee young lass. They have always been the best...people try to imitate and they just cannot get anywhere close. It is kind of sad...I am spoiled...I can never really have any other kind of fudge (outside of Northern Michigan/Mackinac) anymore. I travel to other states...visit candy shops...smell the delicious fudge...and it never comes anywhere close. If you visit Traverse City you MUST stop here.

Yelp
Look for the large box of fudge on the roof to spot this shop. As soon as your walk in the door the delicious smell of fudge welcomes you. That is enough to convince a sweet tooth to buy a pound. Samples are given by request. Choices range from traditional chocolate to black cherry; nuts or none. A small area of Michigan souvenirs is also available. The only downfall to this place is location. It is on US 31 which can be rather busy. To make a left turn out can be a challenge - driver beware.

Yelp
My niece and nephew came to visit over the summer and we decided to stop in since its on not too far from the beach and i've been living in TC for over a year now and have never had it, even though i drive past it everyday on the way to work. I was blown away! It was so GOOD! I have never been a fan of fudge but Doug Murdick's Fudge is Delicious! (with a CAPITOL D) Yes, that's how yummy it is! At first it seems a little too sweet, but you start craving it! Next thing you know its all gone! That's exactly what happened to us! Definately going back!

Yelp
First, this is the best fudge around and we have tried them all from Mackinaw to Traverse City. Extra smooth creamy texture, great flavor. Not gritty like some of the other big name fudge sellers offer. My wife has been enjoying it since she was a girl so this year I thought I would order a box for Christmas. Shipped in plenty of time, the PO somehow lost it for about 10 days and it arrived after Christmas. Debbie at Doug Murdick's was in pretty much constant contact with me once the problem was discovered, even going so far as to go in after a family function on Christmas Eve and find me tracking info. The fudge finally arrived shortly after Christmas and a second box, sent by Debbie to make sure we had fudge over the holidays, arrived a day or two later. Both were actually fine. So rare to find someone in the business world today who actually cares about their company, product and customers. Made me glad I did business with them. I would recommend Doug Murdick's Fudge highly.

Yelp
Excellent smooth creamy fudge. A diabetic's disaster. If your palate prefers the drier crumblier variety, this is not the fudge for you. Small selection of local foodie items, such as cherry salsa and cherry BBQ sauce. Worth at least one visit when you're in Traverse City.

Yelp
This fudge was fantastic, creamy and fresh with lots of delicious big cherry flavors in both the dark chocolate cherry and the white chocolate cherry. So rich and tasty, I wish you could get it outside of the Traverse City area!

Yelp
Lots of really good fudge, so many different kinds! Its fun to watch them make in house and try all the samples. The prices are great too. I also had some brittle that was excellent!

Bob K.

Yelp
Tasty fudge! Stop by everytime we are in the area. Cant compare to any others since this is the only place we come to.
