I enjoyed visiting this site. The volunteer attendant was knowledgeable and friendly. It only costs 3 AUD to enter which is next to nothing and it's easy to get to so there's no reason not to go. It gives you a sense of the early days of Port Douglas and how it came to be what it is today. The informational film was informative and enjoyable if a bit dated 😄

I loved it. It mainly portrays the 1886 murder of a a local man by his wife and a man she was said to be having an affair with. Controversial and intriguing. Well presented and explained in an accompanying video. The volunteer guide Bruce was very knowledgeable and explained that when the video was made they were unable to locate a Chinese actor for one of the parts. I'm not so thin-skinned to see a problem as some other people who found it offensive. Beyond that, there is also a display on some aspects of Port Douglas involvement in WWII including the Battle of the Coral Sea. Well worth the $3 donation. There was no waiting, but it was on November 12 2024 and maybe a quiet time.

Cons: A racist portrayal of a Chinese man in their video. The information contained in the video was interesting but the white actor playing a highly stereotyped Chinese character was offensive. Pros: Historic courthouse with enthusiastic volunteers who are knowledgeable about the history local area.

Displaying local history in the original timber courthouse - video and display of controversial murder crime. WWII, Low Isles lighthouse huge crystal lenses & early reef studies, gold rush, Chinese history. Good displays and volunteer guides. Friendly, attentive and know their history. Only $3 entry for adults, students and kids are free

The second oldest courthouse in Queensland. A great volunteer was on duty. Keep up the good work. Well presented. Nominal entry fee. Good to learn about the history of Port Douglas through law enforcement view. It was interesting to see how we have changed in our views, attitudes, values and practices even in under 90 years.
