I've had DoveCote bookmarked for a while now, so my husband and I decided to make a reservation for my birthday. There are a lot of things to enjoy about the DoveCote, but some areas fell a bit short of expectations.
Starting with the positives:
- Parking was super easy (which can always be challenging in downtown). There's a small outdoor parking lot, garage parking (which you can get validated), and valet parking.
- The service was impeccable. Our waiter was very kind and attentive. We definitely didn't feel forgotten here.
- I absolutely loved my cocktail, the Penicillin, so much that I forgot to take a good photo of it! The flavors were very well balanced and the smokey flavor added a nice richness to the drink.
Where improvements can be made:
- The food. What can I say about the food? This is an American-style restaurant with French influences, and it's almost forgettable. It's not great, and it's not terrible. It tastes fine, but doesn't stand out positively.
I ordered the Grilled and Chilled Octopus, French Mussels, and Chocolate Mousse. My husband had the Magical Fridays pre-fixe menu: Ham and Cheese Beignets, Steak Frites, and Oreo Surprise.
I don't recommend the Grilled and Chilled Octopus. Octopus, when paired with the right ingredients and prepared well, can taste amazing; it has a tender texture and a light taste, and takes on the flavor of what it's served with. I don't think the avocado added anything of note to the dish and the soft texture of the avocado took away from the chewy texture of the octopus. These two light-flavored and textured ingredients did nothing for each other.
My French Mussels were fine. I appreciated the chorizo as it added a nice bit of spice to the dish. If you order it, I recommend asking for hot sauce as the dish really pops when you add an acidic component. However, because they put the bread in the covered bowl, the toasted bread somehow ended up feeling and tasting stale and doughy. They should serve the bread on the side to keep the toasted crunch and flavor.
The Chocolate Mousse was also great. It was very rich, creamy, and decadent.
My husband felt the pre-fixe menu was a good deal. He enjoyed the Ham and Cheese Beignets, but recommends sharing them; they're super tasty, but can get heavy after awhile. His steak was cooked well, though a bit under-seasoned, and the shoestring fries tasted amazing. He also enjoyed his Oreo Surprise. If you're an Oreo-lover, it's an awesome dessert.
Overall, we felt that DoveCote definitely put in the effort to create a good menu, but some parts just weren't executed well. We paid over $100 for our meal, and if the food had been more memorable, it would absolutely be worth it.
- I feel like the interior has a lot of potential. The space is huge and feels like you could seat a lot of people without the restaurant feeling overcrowded. There's even an outdoor courtyard and I believe you can rent out the space for events.
However, the look and atmosphere of the restaurant doesn't feel cohesive and follows no clear vision. Were they aiming for that classic Parisian style or a French bistro look? I don't know. The final result feels disconnected and contrived. It also feels dated and some of the chairs look like they were from the 80s-90s (and not in a cute way). You can tell they put in the effort, but it just didn't meet the mark.
Also, this is very much a personal thing, but I don't really like non-fabric placemats; I would prefer no placemats at that point. For one, it's really hard to clean those plastic/metal woven placemats well; you wipe them down, but there's no way to clean all those tiny crevices. Secondly, no amount of wiping makes them feel clean either; they're always slightly sticky.
I think the DoveCote is aiming to provide a nice dining experience and, overall, it's ok; I feel like they have the potential to be a lot better.
I wouldn't be averse to coming back, and if a friend suggested the DoveCote for dinner, I wouldn't say no -- but I might recommend other options.
