Downtown Camper by Scandic (Stockholm, Sweden) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Downtown Camper by Scandic, true to its name, is set right in the heart of Stockholm, and styles itself as a home base for “urban explorers.” Twelve types of accommodations range from economical rooms for solo travelers to grand suites and apartments that accommodate up to 12 guests. The interior design is part rustic, part urban, and as impeccably composed as you’d expect from this Nordic style capital. Rent bikes, kayaks and even skateboards at the front desk, or head upstairs to hang out at the the Nest Cocktail Lounge, a cozy bar with panoramic views of downtown Stockholm — right next door to the Nest Wellness Area, which offers an outdoor pool, a sauna and a gym." - Tablet Hotels

We had an amazing experience staying at this hotel, the staff were very welcoming and friendly! Also, the second day of staying, we walked into the room with a plate of fresh fruits and a message to welcome us, which I thought was a very kind gesture. Would 100% recommend to anyone that is visiting Stockholm as this hotel is based right at the central of the city.

Google
Recommended wholeheartedly! Our stay at Downtown Camper was absolutely incredible. Everything about this place is easily top tier (except perhaps for the slightly funky meatballs during breakfast). The subway central is just a minute's walk away so the location is absolutely perfect. Clean, modern, welcoming and simply stunning. I'll most definitely be coming back to this downtown gem in the future. Probably one of the easiest 5-star ratings I've ever given.

Google
If I could I’d rate this place 4.5. Its location is great. Very convenient for the train station, old town etc. We liked the style of the rooms and everything in the room was super clean when we arrived. Little in the way of storage space though. And they’ve jumped on the eco trend of not cleaning the rooms during your stay which I didn’t mind but I think someone could have ran a vacuum cleaner up the corridor between the rooms occasionally! Breakfast choice and quality was really impressive. But as they do point out it does get very busy at peak times. Both bars, Campfire and Nest, were great. Loved the view from Nest across the city. All the staff were super friendly and helpful.

Google
A clean well appointed hotel with a central location, great to use as a base to explore the city. Large quiet rooms with comfortable beds and modern feel. Breakfast is fantastic with a huge offering of food. A couple of pleasant bars also. Having to pay extra to use the swimming pool and sauna was a bit of a shock

Disappointed by this hotel and wouldnt book a Scandic hotel again because of it. It's not child friendly. They advertise the roped reading area above reception but its actually only available between 1600-1730. It's very uncomfortable and is limited to 10 people. People under the age of 16 can't use the rooftop/pool which was the biggest disappointment, we noticed other families trying to use the pool and having to bring children back down. The pool is advertised in reception and in the lifts so you can't avoid your children noticing it. There is a cafe on the lower level where you can borrow a picnic basket, however this isn't available until 11am which was pointless because most people had left for the day. We had breakfast one of the days. It was expensive and chaotic. You turn up and have to find a table. Admittedly we arrived at 9am on a Friday morning which was a busy time, but finding a clean table for 3 people was a nightmare. For what we paid we wanted a more comfortable experience. The range of food available was good though when we eventually got to it through all the people. There are nearly 500 rooms in this hotel so plan your breakfast time wisely. The rooms are stuffy, we asked for a fan and it took over an hour to arrive. The beds are comfortable. Our 9 year old sat for a while on the seating area by the window but had to move due to coughing. He was fine when he moved, it must have been dusty. We enjoyed toasting marshmallow in the Campfire bar. This is available between 6pm-8pm daily. In my opinion to get the most out of the stay in this hotel you need to be a young adult (above 16) to enjoy the activities and facilities. It's really put a downer on our holiday that we couldn't join in these.

Stayed at Downtown Camper by Scandic for a few days with a big group. The beds and rooms were roomy and comfortable! The staff were so nice and accommodating. Also, the breakfast can’t be beat! One of the nicest places we stayed in while in Sweden. Would stay here again in a heartbeat. They offer lots of activities and made our stay memorable!

Google
Stayed there for 3 nights, and we loved it. Buffet was great, fueled the kids for hours while we wandered the city. We got the bunk bed room, and it was amazing. Each kid having their own bed and not rolling into each other and smacking each other for fun all night was wonderful for my own sleep. The reading nook was the best part. All of us fought over relaxing in the corner to read a book during breaks. There was enough seating for all 4 of us when we needed the downtime. The hotel even had special activities scheduled throughout the day. We didn’t take advantage of it since we were out wandering most the time. The location was great for getting to where we needed. We walked to Gamla Stan and even over to the island with the museums easily. The gym isn’t gigantic but it had all the necessary machinery and items we needed for basic workouts in the morning. Absolutely recommend.

Google
The hotel is ideally located, near the old town, in the main hub by the train station. I took the train from the airport and was in my room in no time. The rooms are space efficient, which is what you are booking, but they are also quite dark and the lighting, while creating a great vibe, is a little hard to navigate when you are looking for something and you need to get your flashlight on to provide enough light to do so. The bed was comfortable and the rooms reasonably quiet. Breakfast was quite good.

Yelp
I've been to Stockholm 4 years in a row now and have never experienced discrimination until I arrived at this hotel. I came in with my non-Asian coworker and he was helped at the desk while I waited right behind him. There were 3 employees at the front desk. An Italian family came up after me and they were waved over to be helped. I thought maybe the staff just didn't see me but then it happened again. Another European lady walks up and is waved over to be helped. I stepped up and asked why everyone is cutting me off in line and that's when the front desk said "oh sorry about that." After 18 hours of travel, this was a horrible way to start the week. I had a few coworkers staying at the hobo across the street and everytime I walked in to meet up with them, I was greeted by staff. I stayed there last year as well and didn't experience anything discriminatory. I assumed the Downtown Camper would be better since they have a few more amenities in the room such an iron and kettle but this was not worth it. Being treated like you are invisible ruins the entire experience. On top of that, it makes me look at Sweden in a different light. Right outside the hotel there was a group of men that proceeded to yell things like "ni hao Ching Chang Chong!" I expected more from a place/staff that is supposed to be hospitable and welcoming. While we cannot control what happens outside of the hotel, it would have been nice to feel safer in your hotel and free from judgement just because we don't look the same.

Yelp
Downtown Camper Scandic has a great central location. Right across from a mall area with food options and near the train station. It is an interesting concept- adults camping. FYI-Not for kids. There are 'camp' Excursions offered -some free- 7 am yoga, but most with a fee. -The Nest-rooftop bar has great views, drinks. Avg price $16-18. -roof top pool/sauna looks amazing however is not easily accessible to hotel guests which was very disappointing. Again- not for kids. You must signup for scheduled 2 hour use at cost of $35.00. They offer 'Free' sessions for hotel guests- only M,Th at 8 pm for 30 min regimented meditation sessions for which you must sign up at the desk. 5 mins at the end is allowed for unstructured enjoyment in pool and again children are excluded. Similarly there is a central net area in the lobby, however it seemed to be more for looks than use as it was usually blocked from use. The rooms are good, the bunk area is interesting but I agree with the reviewer who thought a table in the window area would have been a better use of space.

Yelp
Really great location. Check in had a crazyyy long line but they got through it fairly quickly. Breakfast was also super busy and kind of a madhouse. But the room was nice and comfy :)

Yelp
Prime location, super cute hotel with nice staff and fun daily hosted events; bike tour, walking tour and rooftop bar with an infinity pool (extra fee for the pool). You can rent a bike for 50 SEK ($5.30 USD) for four hours. We rented the bikes and 4 hours is plenty of time to explore the area. They also offer yoga and have a lil cinema in the back. Complimentary breakfast buffet..no smoked/peppered fish. They do have vegetarian/vegan options (oatmilk, almond milk, vegan cream cheese, fruits, veggies..). The rooms are clean, modern and really spacious. The ac didn't work too well but overall, a nice hotel!

Yelp
Enjoyed our visit here in October 2019 - would highly recommend! Pros: 1. Location - We walked from the Central Station (~7 minutes) on arrival and never needed to take public transportation or taxis during our stay. Everything was within a 25 minute walk for us. 2. Great breakfast - Large breakfast buffet with many organic options and options for different dietary restrictions. Everything from pancakes and waffles to scrambled eggs to a yogurt bar to fresh fruit and cold cuts. I was amazed at the different vegan and gluten free options available to those who needed them. The food was also constantly being restocked. 3. Consistent wifi 4. Comfortable, clean rooms, including beds and pillows - This room was on the larger side of rooms we've stayed at in Europe and had a window seat for resting, plus a fridge and safe. 5. Sustainability efforts: The hotel is very into being green. There were signs all over describing their efforts and asking guests to participate. Example: Guest rooms are not cleaned daily unless guests ask (no extra charge). 6. Activities - We didn't participate in any of the offered activities (city walks, bike rides, etc..) but had we stayed longer we may have! Cons: 1. Breakfast can get very crowded at peak times. 2. You have to re-login to their wifi every 12 hours.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful and trendy hotel! I travel to Stockholm quite often and this is always my go to hotel. The lobby is huge and cozy at the same time, they have a gigantic hammock that is on the roof of the lobby that you can lay in to relax. The breakfast is absolutely insane, there's no less than 400 options of things to eat, including multiple waffle makers. The rooms are very spacious for Sweden, and they are really nicely decorated. Most rooms have windows and a window lounge. The hotel dinner restaurant is delicious, have eaten here a few times and always enjoyed the beyond burger. The staff are incredibly nice! I've had a few odd things here and there and whenever I needed some help they've been more than accommodating and just so nice. Definitely recommend this over the other hotels in the area (hobo, nobis, Sheraton)

Yelp
This hotel is what happens when you combine the aesthetics of an A Loft hotel with the social/activities oriented vibe of a hostel and throw in a massive breakfast buffet. Clean, modern rooms with all the amenities, a nice nook in the room for reading, expansive breakfast buffet included, young friendly staff working the desks, daily activities scheduled by or suggested by the hotel, bikes and kayaks for rental, a movie room for movie nights, a net for lounging, ping pong tables on each floor, nooks in the lobby for lounging/working/socializing, etc. Despite all the activities, it's not too loud in the rooms, at least not on the upper floors where we were at. All this for a relatively reasonable price, especially given the great location. It's right next to the central station and downtown walking areas. A few things we didn't like: our room had a scent that smelled like incense and the thermostat in the room wasn't super responsive and the room felt too warm. We were told breakfast started at 6:30am when we checked in, it was written as 6:30am in the information in our room, but on the day we were leaving to catch a 9am international flight, we were told breakfast was at 7am. Even though breakfast looked mostly set up by 6:40am, we weren't allowed to get any food. The best they could do was to give us a couple of bananas. Several other people were waiting for breakfast also since they also thought it started before 7am so there clearly was a huge communication issue with the timing of breakfast.

Yelp
Great location, very clean hotel. My childern loved the hotel so much, an addition to the game room and suspended Net above the lounge area. If I ever return to Sweden, I will stay at the Camper. Con: Front desk could be a bit more pleasant. I use to work at a Hostel in New York- so I get how rough days and checking in several clients in and out while handling numerous questions can be annoying. However the two female receptionist I dealt with were all bland. Before I checked-in, I reserved a date for their spa department. The female front desk agent tells me I can pay now for it during check-in. I tell her no problem, then suddenly she switches to Swedish directing her comment to what I will assume is the Manager. All of a sudden there is all this unnecessary commotion on if I am to pay for the spa services now or later. The assumed manager tells me, I can pay at the spa [day of] and I reply that I don't. care, your agent was the one who initiated this conversation. 2nd encounter with another bland female receptionist: A couple days later, due to the weather, I inquire with front desk if I can cancel my spa reservation because I may not have time and my boys want to go ice skating. She continues to stress that only Hotel guests can cancel a spa reservation. Am I a hotel guest? I'm like...I just told you my room number and I made the reservation prior to even arriving. Perhaps it was a language issue. But she could not understand that I was a guest there. Either way if front desk management could train some of their front desk staff not to speak a different language in front of a guest and to actually smile, it would be better.

Yelp
It is over 3 years since our stay at Camper, and the wide and I still talk about this place. The vibe of the hotel, staff, restaurant and rooms were all cohesive and amazing. Restaurant on the main lobby had drinks and food to die for. We had the cauliflower plate, amazing. Location was close to everywhere we were going. Staff were super helpful and kind. The rooms were comfy and cool. Made me want to knock down my house and have them style my place for me. If we ever come back to Stockholm, we are coming back here.

Yelp
This hotel is great. Absolutely fabulous. The rooms are beautiful, the staff is super friendly, we checked in with a young girl named Julia who was awesome. The breakfast is incredible. Worth the 2 minute seating wait. Buffet style of everything and anything. The rooms are newly renovated, the beds are comfy, the interior is chic and comforting and the location is great. Would definitely come back !!

Yelp
Newly renovated and launched hotel in heart of downtown. Just opened in September 2017 so it's 3 months new. Sleek stylish and modern. They've got a restaurant, lounge, bar/club and tons of interesting amenities downstairs. Large rooms, clean modern bathrooms and a comfy bed. Fairly good price performance value for an expensive city like stockholm. Near Central station, retail and many other things

Yelp
Glamping in the City A unique concept within the Boutique Hotel world, Downtown Camper is like a hotel version of Glamping with it's camping inspired modern design. The first thing you notice are the textures when you walk in; wood surfaces, moss covered columns, leather and wool textiles, netted ceilings for lounging and kayaks and fireplaces strewn about. There was a charcuterie platter waiting for us in the room and all kinds of helpful information about navigating the city. Our first stop was Nest - the bar on the top floor. Anton started us with some creative cocktails and we stayed for a few more both to try new concoctions but also to chat with such a fun person. The breakfast buffet is quite an affair - with jubilant staff winding through the inventive space thronged with guests. It had a variety of deliciousness and a fun energy. Creative, vibrant, and quirky - Downtown Camper is a centrally located hub of cool.

Yelp
Love, love, love this hotel. Sure, it's a little too twee with the barber in the lobby and giant rope hammock to hang out in, but the room we had was much larger than I expected with a window seat to people-watch. Like the largest room in which we stayed in Scandinavia and reasonably priced, too. The buffet breakfast in the morning, as well as the bars/lounges make this an excellent starting point to explore Stockholm--everything is within walking distance.

Yelp
This hotel is beautiful but be careful of checking in. We went early and understood that we could not get a room right away but they had us fill out the paperwork and said when it is time to check in we could probably just get the keys and not stand in a line. So we did just that. We filled out all of the paperwork and left for a tour of the city. When we came back 5 min before check in, We were not allowed to check in and when we came back after another 15 min, the line was out the door. Went to a manager and said nothing they can do. Now we have yo wait in a very long line. I don't like posting reviews but I feel that if you tell a customer one thing and then do not honor what is said, it is a big fail. I would have been fine standing in line and waiting my turn if I was not told otherwise. Other than that it is very beautiful and right in the middle of everything which is a big plus.

Yelp
Rude front desk staff. No room service at night. No water in room have to buy it at reception ! Never been talked to so condescendingly in :30yrs of travel. Stay away if you want service. Here with a group of 21 rooms. Will never be back !
google avatar

Yelp
First time at this hotel and I must say it's really beautiful. Lest call it a fun interior with a twist. Testing out the rooftop spa and it's a beauty! Will be back!

Joshua Y.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful layout for outdoor lovers. A campsite in the heart of the city. Very family friendly and a relaxing stay. Restaurant and buffet: both excellent service and great options for all diets. Paleo/vegan/vegetarian options are superb. Family's favorite stop in Scandinavia.

Rasmus R.

Yelp
Nice hotel in the center of Stockholm. Rooms are small, but smartly furnished. We stayed for three days in total. What we liked: - nice alternative to standard hotels - relaxed, modern atmosphere - nice breakfast buffet What we didn't like: - I prefer a cleaned room without actively asking for it the evening before (it looks like the hotel is trying to patronize its customers for the sake of saving the world (and personnel cost)) - even if the room is not cleaned, it would be nice to have the trash emptied without asking (that gets really bad after 2 days with organic trash) - there is a tipping point of people density when things get stressful at the breakfast buffet and it may take 15+ min to get back to your table, crew seemed overwhelmed

Yelp
Hotel is in a great location of Stockholm, however, lots of construction going on outside. Room are quiet but not a lot of lights. Rooms are very dark and strangely designed. First hotel I have been to that has no facial tissues in room. Buffet breakfast pretty good and lasts from 7 till noon. You need to pay to swim in the pool. You can rent free bicycle while they last.

Yelp
We loved staying at this hotel. We arrived early and asked if we could check-in. We got lucky! The room was ready. I've never stayed at a hotel that had such great themed décor. The location was close to just about every where we wanted to go. The breakfast is the best free hotel breakfast I've ever had. I can't say enough good things about this hotel.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Great location, great decor and a sick Model X out in the front. Rooms are nice and I even heard a maid belting out some tunes which was great listening to. Food at downstairs restaurant was spectacular - surprisingly filling despite the small portions. Would come again

Andreas S.

Yelp
What a cool hotel. So stylish, so cool. It's not just a hotel - it's a concept! Room is equipped very stylish, lots of cool ideas, breakfast is absolutely huge with lots of different stuff. Personal very very friendly and helpful. And my first hotel, in wich I could not hear anything from the surrounding people. What is really really bad (and does not fit to the stylish concept) is WIFI! Slow, buggy, unstable, that was just a shame! But besides that, a really super cool hotel!

David N.

Yelp
This place had the most amazing breakfast. So many choices it was hard to pick every day. The ginger breakfast shots were awesome. Rooms are nice and clean. Always had a good night sleep with comfortable bed. Our room had a window seat that was run to sit and relax. Great 9th floor bar to grab a drink and see Stockholm from a great view. Do the net relaxation at 5 pm daily!

Patrick L.

Yelp
We have to cancel our reservation due to covid19 related travel restrictions. We're legally not allowed to enter the country (non EU citizens) and our flights were cancelled. We called the hotel to request a refund and they refused to give us a refund. These hotel operators are scumbags, and this is very telling about how they view their customers - as suckers to be taken advantage of during a global pandemic. Shame on you Scandic - I never cared about your brand in the past, but I will definitely avoid you in the future.

Yelp
My family and I arrived yesterday evening and are astonished at how nice the Downtown Camper is! Everything is modern and designed with a rustic outdoors theme. There's a large theater room and conference rooms in the lobby for guests to use. The restaurant is fantastic and serves a great selection of local fare. Our room has a large king bed and two small pull-out beds that are perfect for small kids. Everything is clean and well polished. It's a short walk to Gamla Stan and other main attractions in Stockholm, but not so far that you'd notice. I look forward to staying here again!

Yelp
Why is their Nest, a gorgeous outdoor patio/pool area/bar not open over the weekend? I get it is the Midsummer holiday, but this is an alluring aspect of the hotel and it's busy here. Seems like it should be a priority to have open for guests. Disappointing to miss out of the beautiful Swedish summer evenings here.

Scorgle D.

Yelp
Not baby-friendly! Young parents beware! Stockholm has a lot of really nice, equally well-situated hotels in this price range, but what sold camper for us was their website's advertising of its magnificent rooftop patio/bar. Perfect for exhausted young parents who want to enjoy the end of their night soaking in a great view while only having to wander a few steps from their room to get it. So you can imagine our disappointment when my wife and sleeping baby and I were denied access to this rooftop. New rule taped up- nobody under 16 allowed. Shockingly, this new rule extends beyond the usual noisy children/teens to include sleeping infants. So we spent our 2 nights in stockholm in a tiny hotel room watching bad cable TV. Understandably, this is not as big a deal for some travelers, but for us, vacations are very expensive and we won't be able to see stockholm again for quite awhile. When we only have a couple of nights somewhere, we really treasure that time. This is what we were excited about, it's what was advertised, and it's what we paid for. We have no other reason to have chosen this hotel over the more luxurious and spacious hotels in this area in the same price range. The other guests we met with a baby seemed to have the same sentiment, so hopefully this is helpful to others in our situation. Our experience obviously doesn't apply to people in other life situations. Single, outdoorsy people would probably like it. Aside from the issue of parents with infants not getting what they paid for, this place is relatively tasteful, albeit ham-fisted in its camping motif. Location is great. Breakfast is nice. Staff is friendly. But the rooms are tiny, and without the rooftop, it's no better than any $175/night 3.5 star place.

Nathan T.

Yelp
Unable/Unwilling to accommodate early check-in for international travelers. Fine for locals, but due to flight time restrictions to arrive in Stockholm for direct flights from The United States, plan on waiting until after 1500 to have access to your accommodations.

V V.

Yelp
We stayed here for six nights in June and had a good experience. The room was a decent size, with a nice window nook to nap and read. Beds were super comfy and room was nicely appointed. Great breakfast, although if you go at peak hours it is extremely crowded. Only a few cons: our shower was quite leaky due to the design (only half door), they don't do a full cleaning even if you request it, and if you stay on a lower floor facing the mall, you will get some street noise. But the location and ambiance are so good that we would probably do it again.

Susan M.

Yelp
Sitting in the lobby at 1 PM. Was told that our room was ready but if we wanted access to the room before 3, we would have to pay a $15 fee. At $250/night this seemed unwarranted and inhospitable. Last time we'll stay here.

Andrew P.

Yelp
Our stay in Stockholm at Downtown Camper was terrific. The hotel was centrally located, so walking to many of the most interesting places was a breeze, and local transportation by metro, taxi, or boat was very convenient. The rooms are small, but charming and cozy, and the fabulous fresh breakfast that was included in our package was well worth the price. But, most of all, the service was 5-star. My daughter and I received amazing -- and very kind -- help from concierges Malin, Kristian, and Ted. They, and all the other staff at the hotel, were just wonderful. There is no question that we will stay at the Downtown Camper on our next visit to Stockholm.
