Drake Motor Inn

"Set the sceneDon't confuse Prince Edward County with the postage-stamp Canadian Maritime province Prince Edward Island. The county is a collection of farming villages, such as Wellington, Picton and Bloomfield, on the shores of Lake Ontario, halfway between Toronto and Ottawa. It's also Ontario's second wine-growing region (after Niagara). But despite lovely vistas and small pleasures, it was a long way off main getaway radars. It's since become seriously current with sleek espresso bars and dance parties in old barns in addition to quainter options like blue heron-spotting. Last year, The Drake Hotel owner Jeff Stober further advanced the cool cred of the county after he refurbished an aging old motel down the road from his other property The Devonshire, opening it as The Drake Motor Inn. What's the back story?People started to come to the county on wine-tasting weekends. Then came the Drake Devonshire, the country cousin of the Drake Hotel, the slick crash pad on Toronto's with-it Queen Street West. The Devonshire was given the Drake treatment (good art and food). Some of the Drake posse came from Toronto to help open the Devonshire and, even after they left the hotel, stayed on in the area to open brilliant businesses like Oak Clothing Co or Beacon Bike+Brew. Creatives from further afield include the UK's Kate Golding who launched her next-gen wallpaper company here. In 2019, Stober started work on reviving the motel that would become his third property in the area. What’s the crowd like?Mostly families from within a four-hour drive, perhaps Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Global visitors who are hearing about this new Canadian hotspot are a newer audience. The motel is also a draw for small groups because rooms can sleep up to five. What can we expect in our room?Family-style motel rooms, though there’s no worn and scratchy olive-green carpeting. They are light and airy with cool Scandi-inspired furniture and stand-up clothes racks from Normann Copenhagen instead of bent-out-of-shape wire hangers. Glass dividers in each bathroom are covered with contemporary art chosen by the Drake's curatorial team. But there’s still a solid retro feel, too. Guests pop open a can of local craft beer stocked in mini-fridges or buy Hawkins Cheezies, a favorite crunchy Canadian snack, from the vending machine, then flip through vintage magazines. The motel gives out s'mores kits for the fire pit in the evening. What about the food and drink? The Motor Inn is a riff on a roadside motel and most of these aren’t known for extensive food offerings. Breakfast at the Inn is a light affair in the lobby, and coffee is available around the clock. But the county itself is a foodie and boozy paradise. Walk over to the Drake Devonshire for well-executed and locally sourced dishes. The Motor Inn is also an easy stroll to top Wellington restaurants such as East & Main Bistro. Guests often bike to the Agrarian Bistro in Bloomfield or to Picton, the county's biggest town, where the Sand and Pearl seafood restaurant pulls in crowds in the summer for its hot buttered Atlantic lobster roll. What’s the neighborhood like? There’s awesome antique shopping to be done. Go to MacCool’s Re-Use or Dead People's Stuff to hunt for mid-century teak salad bowls, Finnish Kaj Franck enamelware, seventies telephones, or sixties Marshall McLuhan playing cards. Cycling is big here – bike paths cut through forests and wineries such as Karlo Estates or the Grange of Prince Edward winery. The latter is run by a mother-daughter team (the mother is a former fashion model who once sat for Arthur Elgort) who also prepare hefty picnic baskets for visitors. Anything to say about the service?Yes, it's light, motel-style. You might bump into a housekeeper but otherwise you're left largely on your own. Check-in happens via an app that's sent to you when you're on your way over (or walk the two minutes to the Devonshire and check in via their reception desk, if you prefer). Anything else to add?Don't think this is only a place to go in summer. In winter, they build an ice-skating rink behind the Inn. You can also take in the eerily beautiful snowy caps along the shores of Lake Ontario or try ice fishing. Is it worth it – why?Yes. It's sure to project you back to the carefree days of childhood summer holidays." - Karen Burshtein

The rooms were nice, the bed comfortable and loved the art all over the place. The attention they put in detail is amazing like the good morning scones or the welcome cookies.

The room we had was at the top of 30 or more stairs with NO elevator. I would not have booked the room if I had known I was lugging my heavy luggage up 30 stairs.|Once in the room, the bathroom had glass for walls and you could easily see someone in the shower. Not practical at all and not designed with real travel life in mind.

We stayed in room 01 in building 43. Pros: Drive up to your door. Room is large. Cons: Feels a bit bare and cold in decor, sink is in the room not the bathroom. Lighting around the sink on one side, so weird. Fresh scones outside the door in the morning...technically, yes there are scones outside the door but they are in a sealed bag, and slightly dried. Coffee was okay. This was the same for the "smores" kits, asking for them at front desk felt like we were inconveniencing someone. Suggestion: have scones and fruit set out with coffee in main area. Have it be HOT and FRESH. Concierge was helpful, answered questions promptly. We had brunch at the Drake dining room and it was really nice. Great views, yummy food, good service. Overall, expected more and I'm glad we came in winter since I wouldn't pay their summer prices.

Love it! Spouse and I have been here three times with dogs and it's always fantastic. The rooms are comfortable, there is a common area with coffee and snacks, a fire pit, and over the years more choices for food a short walk away...although the Drake Devonshire does a fantastic job of food also. Plus there is now a sauna at the Devonshire to go with the ping pong and other stuff, but we usually walk in town or make the short drive to Picton or the beach. We will definitely be back.

My boyfriend and I stayed here this past weekend and really enjoyed our stay at the Drake Motor Inn! The location is absolutely perfect and it is just a few steps away from the Main Street and a minute walk to their sister hotel on the water. The rooms were pretty good for their value. The check in instructions could have been more clear, we had to check in by going to the Drake Devonshire lobby (sister hotel), but the staff was helpful. The rooms were clean and the room itself was pretty cute. The only downsides were that there was no kitchen/kitchenette inside the room and you can hear the other rooms moving around as the walls are thin. Our building (45) shared a common space where the kitchenette was, so it had a dorm-like feel in the shared spaces. This wasn't a problem for us as we were eating most meals out, but if you like to cook or have complete privacy, this probably isn't for you. Besides that, which wasn't really an issue for us, we loved the motel. The staff is so kind and responsive, they answered our texts within minutes and provided us treats in the morning and at night. They really went above and beyond to think about the little things, and you can even text them at any point to prepare/pick up a s'mores kit from the lobby (Devonshire) to make s'mores at the fireplace. Overall, loved it and it was great for the price.

Great location. They are accommodating with dogs which was amazing and allowed us to bring the whole family together. Food is fantastic at the Drake. Room was spacious with grocery stores restaurants and cafes right around the corner. Can't wait to be back!

We stayed in a large room that seemed to be designed by someone who does not travel and stay in hotel rooms. The bathroom had a separate room for the toilet and a separate shower. The shower was good, the sink was what one would find in a powder room, not a bathroom. Almost no place to put toiletries. There were only two drawer, in the night tables and one held the safe. We had to life out of our suitcases. There was no cupboard, and just on cloths rack and 3 hooks on the wall. We could never figure out how to get a channel listing on the the TV and thee were no instructions on how to use. NO handicap access.

The Drake Motor Inn and neighbouring Drake Devonshire are an absolute must-visit if you're in PEC. We stayed at the Drake Motor Inn (pet-friendly) and the team went above and beyond to make sure that our stay was comfortable. From dog-friendly recos in the area, to dog bowls and a hefty-sized dog bed, the Drake Motor Inn made sure our pup felt just as welcomed as we did. We stayed in the Studio King room, with drive-up access to which was so convenient for unloading, and packing up the car at the end of our trip. The room was surprisingly large (comparatively to hotel rooms at other properties), soundproof, and very well maintained. We had an issue with our heater being too noisy on the first night, and the front desk team responded immediately and sent out maintenance to ensure the issue was rectified. They went so far to hold an upgraded room in the event the issue persisted (which thankfully it did not). Both properties are less than a 2 minute walk from each other which made checking in and out, and going to the restaurant very easy. The restaurant was beautiful with waterfront views. The food was fantastic, and would argue that their brunch menu and their blueberry scones are the star. We also appreciated how centrally located in Wellington the properties were which made travelling in the area to local wineries and other hot-spots an absolute breeze. The service at both the front desk, and at the restaurant overall were outstanding. I would absolutely recommend The Drake properties to anyone looking for a mini getaway from the City, whatever the occasion. Will certainly be looking to visit again in the summer to enjoy the waterfront views!

Yelp
We decided to come here on a whim in the dead of winter. What a beautiful and cozy spot for a weekend getaway! The rooms at the Motor Inn are spread throughout 2 buildings, the blue and the green. Free parking is available in the adjacent lot. Lots of drinks and snacks are available for purchase as part of the mini bar. The shower was huge! The toilet is separated from the rest of the bathroom including the sink. Loved the MALIN+GOETZ toiletry products. My only complaint, the king sized bed was too soft for my liking. It also felt concave by past use. Dog friendly if you've got a furry family member!

Yelp
Save your money! The food is bland and overpriced. Plus they charge you if they make a mistake...aka a fly in my drink, got charged twice! Oh and they wanted 18% tip...please!! I gave 1 star for the gorgeous location.
