The Best Dive Bars in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"One of the earliest-opening dive bars in the city, this dusty strip mall spot let’s folks in at 8 a.m. every day, serving continuously until 2 a.m. The small size lends itself to random conversation with strangers, the ’70s-style wood paneled bar, the plush vinyl stools, and the buzzy feeling that this is a place to feel like a local instead of a tourist. Dive bars, especially LA dives, are the kinds of spaces to connect without shame, and the Drawing Room is one of the best places in town for that purpose." - Matthew Kang

Man Blames Los Feliz Dive Bar the Drawing Room for Vicious Attack - Eater LA

"The Drawing Room has for years operated nearly around the clock, opening often as early as 6 a.m., and closing at 2 a.m. daily. Those extended hours are rare for a drinking establishment in Los Angeles County, and some local business owners, including Swanson’s Laundry Room laundromat, say that customers either lingering after closing or wait to get in for a first morning drink often cause problems. Other nearby business owners tell NBC News that the Drawing Room’s rowdy patrons have been a problem for some time, alleging drug use and other disruptive issues on property. Swanson says that he asked the owner of the Drawing Room to start supplying security months ago." - Farley Elliott

The Drawing Room and their bartenders are truly overwhelmed by the kindess, generosity, and compassion shown by each and every one of you during our these two days donation drive to support the brave firefighters of the Los Angeles Fire Department and fire victims in our community! Thanks to your contributions - whether it was donating water, drinks, essential supplies or simply spreading the word - we were able to make a real difference in a time of great need! To our donors, your generosity is a beacon of hope. To our volunteers and bartenders, your dedication and hard work made this drive possible. Let's continue to support one another, uplife our community, and honor the heroes who protect us every day!

Google
A cash only dive bar, it's very dark inside. They open at 8am, which is perfect for night shift workers. They always greet you with a smile. Drinks are reasonable and you will always walk away laughing because it is a fun atmosphere to relax and get cocktails. They also do Karaoke on Sunday nights, it's busy, but great singers and a fun atmosphere. Highly recommend if you need a great dive bar. Parking is usually available in the parking lot or on the street nearby. Just watch out for street cleaning signs if you leave your car.

Google
This is the best place in los Angeles to get roofied. My friends went there last night and we all got roofied it was sooooo fun. It’s a nice small bar where the bartenders serve you drinks with roofies so you get to go home and be like “yay! We went to the drawing room AND got roofied I love this place”

Google
Great dive bar near Los Feliz. Stiff drinks. Great atmosphere. Weird & colorful regulars.

Janet Walker

Google
It's a great dive bar. My boyfriend Ed and I used to hang out there in the late 90's and dance and sing karaoke. Loved that bar!

Victoria

Google
Don’t know if she was having a bad day, but the middle age blonde medium sized bartender had the nastiest stankest attitude I’ve ever seen. It was downright offputting.

Justin Snider

Google
Amazing bar. If you know you know. If you don't know, you should change that and go!

Lily Weiner

Google
Five with the caveat that it’s a five for what it is which is a really divey dive in a neighborhood that has no other dive bars. The pros: good seating, incredibly strong drinks, weird jukebox, weird vibes (in a good way) The cons: cash only, the drinks are incredibly strong, the regulars can be creepy if you go before 8pm or on any major holiday

Yelp
Well, well, well... Here I am at Drawing Room. A dive bar if there ever was one. It's dark, not fancy and it's rather small inside. The drinks are cheap as fuck and the smell of icky sticky occasionally floats into the place from the outside parking lot. It's a good little no frills place. Just keep the hipsters away, and I think this place will go on forever and retain that neighborhood feel.
google avatar

Yelp
The drawing room is a special place. It's a wonderful dive bar tucked away and has no windows, which is my favorite part. Ashley was a lovely bartender, she was sweet and made the drinks stiff, which is amazing. Even through tribulations, she maintained cool and was an amazing bartender. This lady deserves a raise. I really like coming to the drawing room for the vibes and stiff drinks, but don't forget to be nice to your bartenders.

Yelp
Great Neighborhood Bar. None of the pretentious Hollywood bullshit. Monday Nights here rule.
google avatar

Gerry B.

Yelp
Awesome customer service. Buck was sweet. The Paloma was the perfect balance of sweet and alcohol. I loved the dive vibe. Fun to whip up a quick drawing
google avatar

Armando Q.

Yelp
This place is a great dive bar. The drink pours are some of the most generous I've seen. The bartenders have always been nice and refilled my water along with asking me if I'd like another drink. This is a staple of mine to go to whenever I'm in the mood for a dive bar with great prices.
google avatar

Yelp
Really nice community bar had a great time strong drinks yummie great for hang with friends
google avatar

Kari G.

Yelp
I'd give it zero stars if I could. My boyfriend and I would come here often to shoot darts. The tall bartender dude with the beard and man bun is the most miserable person I've ever met. We're always friendly, mind our business, and have fun playing darts. He recently made racist and sexist comments to me and my friends while telling us to "turn our decibels down" after cheering for each other. If you go here be sure to be a white, middle aged man, don't smile, and definitely don't act like you're enjoying yourself.
google avatar

Pierce R.

Yelp
This place was an absolute gem! So much fun nd I loved the bartenders vibe, she was fun and informative as this is not my usual neighborhood. The darts were alot of fun to play with and drinks were great price! Will be back when I'm in the area
google avatar

Yelp
Since it reopened, after rumors of legal trouble last year, the staff has been pretty unfriendly and cold. It's too bad. At the least the drinks are still relatively cheap (yet somehow in 2024 still cash only.)
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Old school. It's a slice of the past. Opens early. Enough said. Bars like these new to be preserved, like historic landmarks.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Locals only spot for old heads. Weird crew and boring staff. Probably dope if you're 58 trying to get drunk on a week day afternoon. Also, was advertised that there was a pool table but I just saw a broken dart machine and a sticky atm.

Nataly M.

Yelp
Love love love this bar . Been going here for years . All the bartenders are great. Buck is one of my favs . People leaving bad reviews probably don't understand dive bars or get bar etiquette .

Doug T.

Yelp
I come in regularly to this place after work I accidentally spilled over my drink and they didnt give me a refill or refund
google avatar

Cindy F.

Yelp
I've been coming to this bar for a while now. I'm a regular here and the bartenders are friendly! Met a lot of people here from all over. Drinks are reasonable. Heavy handed with shots.
google avatar

Yelp
Best Dive bar in LA . cash only ! best place to grab a drink . karaoke on Sunday nights is a blast and on Monday they give you a free pizza with the football game on the TVs
google avatar

Yelp
#bestever no, really, BEST ever. & is that 85 characters yet? trying... hugs & kisses-jj
google avatar

Tony C.

Yelp
Legit dive bar. It is not a dive theme or manufactured experience like other spots. No 15 dollar shots or over priced drinks.
google avatar

Ron M.

Yelp
Cool Little dive bar, however, be careful parking in the parking lot. Last time I went there, my car got backed into, hit and run. Super cool!
google avatar

Willy R.

Yelp
One time I came to this dive bar and it was cash only and some dragon lady kept telling me my lucky numbers and I couldn't write them down because we were holding hands and I tried to let one of them go but then we started kissing and it was cool but her eyes were closed and i was just watching her eye balls move under those lids and I tasted one of her teeth and it wasn't bad but the fact that it had a flavor made me go deeper, beyond the tooth to get away from thinking about what could give it that sharp flavor, and then my shoe started to come off cause I was like leaning all weird like a horse laying down and the bartender was nice and didn't stare and the dewd playing darts had a funny stink (probably cheap cologne) but it didn't matter because the dragon lady knew the dart dewd and we all became friends and to this day my lucky numbers haven't changed. I'm getting pretty tired about reading all of these reviews, bro. Seriously bro, how u gonna try to tell me to not come here because of something about ur dumb experience, bro? How about I just avoid you instead. You seem to not have a good time anywhere. This place is good because I make it good in my head whether it is or it isn't. Plus I quit smoking. But the darts are good. Probably not for you though because you are either really good or really sucky. Personally I like real darts better but These plastic ones keep track of the game. Jukebox is a flat out enjoyment. Well for me anyways. What do you like and I'll tell you if I think you'll like it. Don't forget to tip, butt horn

Melanie M.

Yelp
I had the same experience as S.I. Very unfriendly place. Hard to get the attention of the bartender. I definitely did not feel welcome. It's very dark and small. My very rich girlfriend and I were looking to have some fun. We had tried all the upscale spots and decided that wasn't working -- only to find that, well, I can't remember being in a worst place than this. Period. I would even call it creepy. And if my review gets removed from Yelp, and trust me, you can get reviews taken down, I will post it on Google and just be more subtle. Because really who uses Yelp any longer -- bad reviews do get removed. THIS IS A TEST. This bar is within walking distance from my apartment. I wanted to like it. Also great idea to do laundry and have a drink, but I'm not returning.

Yelp
TERRIBLE BARTENDER & CUSTOMERS The owner attacks customers who give this establishment a bad review. Read this objective news article about Drawing Room customers physically assaulting a business owner in the same shopping center: https://la.eater.com/2019/5/22/18634355/los-feliz-dive-bar-drawing-room-laundromat-attack-dive-bar Below is my original negative review for which this owner keeps attacking me, as well as everyone who posts negative reviews. Instead he should focus on doing better. Contrary to this owner's statement, he does not have any power to have either Google nor Yelp delete negative business reviews. This is contrary to their guidelines. ========================================================== I visited this bar for the first time. When I walked inside, the patrons all turned around to look at me. They made me feel as if I did not belong. The patrons are mostly local senior citizens. I tried to socialize, but I heard only crickets. They either grunted a response or totally ignored me. The tall caucasian bartender with the man bun was no different. There were only 5 senior citizen customers and me. They were sitting at one end of the bar. This bartender chatted up the senior citizens for almost 20 minutes, before asking me what I wanted to drink. I tried chatting him up, but he immediately returned to the senior citizens. This bartender made it clear that he did not want me at this bar. After 15 minutes, I left. On my way out, this bartender passive aggressively told me "hope to see you again." Do NOT VISIT this bar. Instead take your business to the bar across the street. Both the customers and bartenders immediately made me feel welcomed..

Yelp
I had not been here for a long time but I made the trek on the red line for a good friend's birthday gathering. "Party" would be too strong of a word, since the dour ambiance is not the least bit festive. I don't know if they are trying to attract vampires or what, but the lack of windows is a definite drawback to this bar. The dearth of natural or artificial lighting also resulted in me not being able to see the pizza which we commissioned from next door, which led to a huge grease stain on my shorts. We paid $1 for the juke box, which was supposed to get us 4 songs. Instead the machine requested more money to buy credits, and wouldn't refund the original deposit. On the positive side, the beer is reasonably priced. I think people come here because they are trying to make a statement. Not sure what the statement is exactly. Perhaps broadcasting that they are not part of the gentrifying crowd at pinky's? But the thing about gentrification is that there is hardly anybody from the old guard remaining to hear that particular statement.

Yelp
Hot toddy? No....no lemon...no honey...just whiskey on the rocks. The definitely local spot had about 10 folks in it, they were nice and chatted a bit on an early Friday evening. If you are looking for standard beverages this is a spot to come to be in semi-quiet darkness.

Hannah W.

Yelp
Nice bartenders, chill vibes. Always a place to count on for a pick me up or good time!
google avatar

Yelp
Best dive bar we've been to in this area. Bartender was a gem! We will be back when we are in this area!

Breianna O.

Yelp
This is in response to the business owner; I understand you wanting to defend your staff, and I agree everyone deserves respect, but why would I respect someone who spoke to me in such a nasty manner for no reason? As for the foul language, I'd have never have just spoken to someone that way unprovoked, I'm not classless. Word of advice, have your staff revised as that is an ABSOLUTELY INAPPROPRIATE way of talking to patrons who chose your bar as a place to have fun! I'll never be back as I can think of a million other places in LA I can spend my money and not be treated as such... Also I'll be sure to make it known that's the way your employees treat their clientele. Thanks for nothing :) Wonderful to know that's how the owner conducts business. Calling customers liars. Even if I did create an account to make a complaint, it's only because the way I was treated is UNBELIEVABLE. You and your staff are completely unprofessional. For someone who's been in business 50+ years, you'd think you'd know a thing or two about customer service....

Rekon M.

Yelp
Been coming here for 20 years. As a dive bar connoisseur, it is the best bar in town.
google avatar

Meredith G.

Yelp
Coming from Brooklyn, this place feels like home. She opens early, she dark and divey and she has amazing, tough, badass bartenders! Ashley and Heather could either break up or start a bar fight but also have hearts of gold and that's who I want serving me! After one of his shifts, Van had a Saturday stroll with my girlfriend and I and we ended up buying art pieces from a sidewalk sale. Turns out $1 painting is worth $300! I feel there is a cosmic force in this place. Good feels all around! I can't wait to attend a pot luck!
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
Just a lovely neighborhood bar. The one across the street (which I shall not deign to name) is quite a bit more famous, but this is the one to be at, if you ask me. Good vibes. Nice, dark, divey atmosphere. They went all-in on the seasonal decorations, which is a plus, and the bartender's a sweetheart. And the prices are fair, too! All in all, an easy five stars.
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
Love this neighborhood bar !! Every time I come here I always feel welcomed by the all the locals and bartenders. As a member of the lgbt community I love how welcoming and safe I feel here. Big shout out to heather for being the best bartender in town.
google avatar

Meghan B.

Yelp
I've been going to this bar since 2016. It's dark with a cool ambiance and a killer juke box. I've seen some criticism that it's a dark bar, but I actually prefer it that way. Christina is an amazing bartender, she has a ton of creative shot ideas, and a great attitude. Sundays is karaoke night, and usually has a busier crowd. The prices and the pours are great. My favorite local watering hole, for sure.
google avatar

Marie R.

Yelp
This has been my favorite bar for the past 6 years. I work the nightshift at a local hospital and this place just feels like home. The morning bartenders: Buck, Van, Argee, and Gabe are amazing. Those are the faces that you want to see after a rough shift, an amazing shift, and even a so-so shift. I always recommend this bar to anyone who asks for a good place to have a drink and a delightful chat. The jukebox is great but the conversations with the regulars are even better.
google avatar

Berto G.

Yelp
So very fortunate to have the best bartender despite her dealing with all these assholes she was great very professional and attentive
google avatar

Whitney P.

Yelp
Been coming here for years. Bartenders are friendly, pours are heavy, if there's a seat with my name on it-please don't sit there- it's mine.
google avatar

Andy K.

Yelp
Great music, great drinks, great clientele, and the air conditioning is almost too good. I always say Rite Aid on fairfax and sunset has the best A/C in LA when it gets into our hot season. But we're sitting here in late July and we're bitching it's too cold in this place. I know, so LA. We're never happy. But kudos, Drawing Room. Their A/C bill has to be insane, but it's altruistic. Thank you.
google avatar

Trent C.

Yelp
First off, who runs a cash only business nowadays? My local taco truck guy even accepts credit cards on his iPhone, and that's what led to this problem... I ordered two drinks on a Wednesday night. The bartender directed me to the ATM in the back. I tried to withdraw some cash but it gave me an error message (although it still charged me the two dollar withdrawal fee). I returned the drinks, un-drunk, and apologized telling her about the ATM error. She told me to "try it again." I declined, saying I'd rather not put my card back into a faulty machine. She snatched the drinks from me yelling, "fine!" as she threw them in the sink and stomped away. Clearly this bar is ok being a locals only dive and isn't concerned about attracting new customers because there's no way I'm going back to this s**** hole. If you're only going to give your patrons a single payment option don't throw an attitude when that doesn't work out for you.
google avatar

Xavier L.

Yelp
Used to frequent this place before COVID for cheap Pabst. When did the price for a Pabst go up to 7$ for a 16oz can?
google avatar

Brian A.

Yelp
Walked in in with my boys in a Saturday night. Smelled like PISS N SHIT. Cheap beers tho. 4 STARS :) Smells like the LA river Smells like a dirty porta potty Smells bad...real bad
google avatar

Gabriela H.

Yelp
As some others have mentioned, this place is an incredibly smelly dive bar. Cash only. Very casual, local looking crowd. I came here briefly with my best friend while bar hopping in the area on a Saturday night. We each ordered a well drink. My friend's vodka soda tasted a bit off. We didn't really interact with anyone but the bartender and bounced immediately after finishing our drinks. I don't think I'd go here to meet people or ever again really. The smell is that bad. Sorry, not sorry.

Cheryl W.

Yelp
Lol the owner responded saying I have the wrong bar. Not true. Her hair was faded into a bluish color she had tattoos. Nice try tho.

Brad F.

Yelp
Reasonably priced. Cash only though. Seems like it could be a good time. Can't say the bartender was overly friendly. Don't need to go back.
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
I came here about 6:30a after a LONG night at work with some friends because what do you do that early if you're NOT driving to work...? My buddy who lives in Eagle Rock said "I know a place we can get a beer" and in the haze of the morning, we went. Not the most "welcoming" bar on a Sunday at 6am, the whole bar here apparently was reserved for someone, per the other patrons at the bar and the bartender... I don't know what other sad soul wanders in here at 6:35am to the bar, but they must be important, but with the line up here I think me and the other 3 were a-ok to sit at a booth, drink our 1 beer and be on our marry to Fred 62 for breakfast. This, like many other haunts in this area, pay homage to the Los Angeles of old. I read the reviews of others who have ventured here from afar and it has history. But for me, it's an ok place to get a beer before church or when the best thing for a hangover is more drinking you may see me flump out of an uber here. Enjoy.
google avatar

Logan J.

Yelp
One morning at 10 am I stormed out of my house all frazzled and a mess and needed a drink. I found this place on Yelp and ubered right to it. It was dark , like very dark , but there was a group of people there despite the early time. I was the only female there, mostly it was older men, whom struck me as regulars. One of them bought me a beer but not in a "I'm hitting on you way" more like a "welcome to the drinking before noon club" type of way. The beers were cheap, I'm broke always so I usually don't go anywhere when it isn't happy hour but this place I don't believe had any specials during the time of my visit, and honestly it didn't need to have any. I only went this one time. And I was there for under two hours, but it was one of my worst mornings ever, and after my visit I felt like it turned into a wonderful day. I actually made a friend here that I've kept in touch with during this visit. I also met some strange guy inside who told me he was a beautician and did nails then tried to see my feet and put them in his mouth outside while smoking a cigarette. Bizarre, and no I didn't let him nor did I go visit him at his salon. But in Los Angeles if that's the weirdest thing you encounter while drinking before noon alone , I call it a good day.

Yelp
Had a freaking blast here! My brother and i had just finished seeing a show at the Greek and were buzzing with energy so we yelped the closest dive bar- tada! The Drawing Room. Sweet bartenders who were attentive and generous with their pours! We accidentally stumbled in on karaoke night which prolonged our night of musical pleasure! The singers were fantastic and the crowd was super friendly. Gah i wish i didn't live so far away but anyway i can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
Your neighborhood dive bar. The drinks are cheap (for Los Angeles at least) and the bartender is nice and friendly. She was very quick with serving drinks. I had a nice time.
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
Bring cash. You'll need it for the jukebox. There are two jukeboxes in this city that are worthy of a pilgrimage. The Drawing Room is one of them. A bare bones dive where you go to drink cold beer or other strong beverages. The bartenders are great but you're not there to talk to them. There's electronic darts but you're not here to play games. You are here to drink and listen to that jukebox. That glorious jukebox with curated mixes from the staff and regulars. Bring a roll of dollar bills and make your friends with the TouchTunes app jealous.
google avatar

Albert V.

Yelp
Glad to see a big crowd here after a show, I guess the loss of the luck bar is being felt, but definitely a solid, authentic Hollywood crowd. Oh, and if you don't like too-strong drinks, people smoking outside, and a funky smell, well then, why the HELL are you stepping into a dive bar in the first damn place??? Keep it real drawing room
google avatar

Shabri F.

Yelp
Cheap beers and smooth atmosphere. It's been awhile since I have been here. Nothing has changed lol. Still divey and dark. Perfect
google avatar

Cynthia M.

Yelp
I really liked this place. It is located in the corner shopping center. Walking in you notice the Chinese decor on the walls and beams on ceiling. The booths are so vintage and well kept, I loved them! The bartender lady was very nice and attentive. They didn't have a huge beer selection and offer no food. However the Italian place next door is amazing. The crowd was a bit older during the day but I'm sure the dynamics of the crowd changes at night. They had a huge tv screen and a jukebox. I'd definitely come back here again when I'm in the area.
