We had never been to Cancun, and chose Dreams Riviera Cancun after a pretty extensive evaluation of every resort on the coast from Cancun to Tulum. Turned out to be a good choice. The resort is well maintained, they do a great job with the landscaping, and the pools were great. Seemed to be plenty of lounge chairs around the pools, hot tubs, and the beach. But if you want a prime one, you better get out there early and lay your stuff on one. The good ones were usually gone by 8:00.
We had an issue with the room they initially assigned to us, due to the plunge pool being right by a very busy sidewalk. You could literally step from the pool to the sidewalk. But the Mgt team moved us to a better location, literally a few hours from when we made the request. They were very accommodating. We had a room with a plunge pool, which had a great little patio area. Would have been awesome in the summer, but the plunge pool water was very cold in February! But we enjoyed the room. Lots of space, nice size shower, and plenty of room with the dual sinks spaced far apart. Ceiling fan was a nice surprise too.
The restaurants were the best we have had at an all inclusive. Out of the 7 at which we had dinner, 2 were okay, 3 were very good, and 2 were great. All the bars were good. Plenty of fun, fruity drinks on their special menu. Seemed a little light on the alcohol, but you could always get more. We also tried room service once, which was very good. They showed up right on time.
For the most part, the staff are very friendly and helpful, especially in the nicer restaurants and around the pools. We had a couple who didn't seem to want to smile, but most of them were nice and happy. I took plenty of pesos with us to hand out tips, and even though you not expected to tip, I really do think it helps, and the workers do appreciate it.
One thing I think Dreams did well, was put on nightly entertainment, either at a makeshift stage they put up near the lobby, poolside, in their little conference room theater, or the live musicians who played nightly in the main open hall. These are not Vegas type shows, but they were entertaining, and we appreciated the effort. I think we made 3 of the shows, and saw a couple live music sets.
We did not do any excursions, and honestly had no interest in leaving the property. We got enough enjoyment just hanging by the pool or on the beach, hitting the restaurants & bars, and taking in the shows that they offered. We're not really ocean people, and it's a good thing. We were told that they have a daily problem every Feb thru mid March, with seagrass floating up on the beach. It's everywhere, and you see them send out the workers and tractors everyday to rake it up and haul it away. And the next day, the water line of the beach is covered again. But if you like getting in the water, there were plenty of people who would just walk through it and get to clean water about 10 yards from short. Just not us.
Would I go to this resort again? Probably not, because there are dozens and dozens of options in Cancun. But would I recommend it to a friend or family member going to Cancun? Yes, I would.
